The 1959 film “Fever Mounts at El Pao” (also known as “Republic of Sin”) is not a metaphor for Francoist Spain, I’m sure. Spanish director Luis Buñuel never would have done that in this French-Mexican co-production…oh. Wait. This is Luis Buñuel! Maybe it is. Maybe it’s just a dream. You never know! La película de 1959 La fiebre sube a El Pao (también conocida como “Los ambiciosos”) no es una metáfora por España durante Franco, seguro. El director español Luis Buñuel nunca haría eso en esta co-producción entre Francia y México. Bueno…espera. ¡Es Luis Buñuel! ¡Quizás sí es una metáfora! Quizás es un sueño. ¡Nunca se sabe con Buñuel! 

Ojeda is a Caribbean Island used as a penal colony by a dictatorship. When leader Mariano Vargas (Miguel Ángel Ferriz) is shot and killed by a sniper at a rally, his secretary Ramón Vázquez (Gérard Philipe) tries to take over. However, the arrival of new governor Alejandro Gual (Jean Servais) throws everything into more chaos. It seems the widow of the dictator, Inés Rojas (María Félix) is having an affair with Vázquez, and the new governor knows about it and wants both Inés and complete control of the island for himself. It’s a struggle for power and love. Ojeda es una isla del Caribe que también sirve como una colonia de presos por una dictadura. Cuando el gobernador Mariano Vargas (Miguel Ángel Ferriz) es asesinado en un tiroteo en un mitin, su secretario Ramón Vázquez (Gerard Philipe) intenta tomar control. Sin embargo, la llegada del gobernador nuevo Alejandro Gual (Jean Servais) causa aún más caos. Parece que la viuda del dictador, Inés Rojas (María Féliz) tiene una aventura romántica con Vázquez, y el nuevo gobernador lo sabe y quiere ambos Inés y control absoluto de la isla. Es una batalla por poder y amor. 

I must admit the quality of the version I watched wasn’t great and kept skipping, so there are a few parts I missed. However, the film is pretty straight forward for Buñuel. It would be in place with the political dramas House of Cards and maybe Scandal (I still need to get around to watching the latter!) today. It was made the year Fidel Castro came into power in Cuba and at the height of the Franco dictatorship. It was shot in México, but the film was in French (although there were some parts that *had* to be dubbed in the version I watched.) Tengo que decir que la calidad de la versión que vi no estaba buena y saltó en algunas partes, y por eso, he perdido algunas partes de la peli. Sin embargo, es fácil seguir por una película de Buñuel. Podría acompañar las series políticas House of Cards y quizás Scandal (todavía tengo que ver Scandal) hoy en día. Hizo la película el mismo año que Fidel Castro tomó posesión del poder en Cuba y en el medio de la dictadura de Franco. Era rodada qne México, pero estaba en francés (aunque creo que había partes dobladas en la versión que vi.) 

Lead actor Gérard Philipe died during filming. I sometimes wonder if Buñuel had a curse because so many of his films marked the final appearance of an actor or actress. El actor protagonista Gérard Philipe se murió durante el rodaje. A veces me pregunto si hubiera una maldición en Buñuel como tantos películas que hizo eran la última de algún actor o actriz. 

María Félix as femme fatale Inés stole every scene she was in. The film was well-acted and, with the current political climate, holds up today. It’s Buñuel’s most overtly political film (although still criticizing that rich, upper class!), although he claims it was the least favourite French film he made. If you can find me a quote of Buñuel saying he was satisfied with a film, I’ll be shocked. María Felíz como la femme fatale (mujer fatal) era genial en cada escena. En general, la película era muy buen actuado y, con la clima política actual, es muy relevante hoy en día. Es la película más obviamente política que hizo Buñuel, y claro, también critica la clase alta y rica. Sin embargo, Buñuel dijo que era su peor película francesa que hizo. Si encuentras una cita de Buñuel que dice que estaba satisfecho con una película que hizo, me dará un shock. 

The film was co-written by Buñuel, Luis Alcoriza, Charles Dorat and Louis Sapin and was based on the novel by Henri Castillou.  El guíon fue escrito por Buñuel, Luis Alcoriza, Charles Dorat y Louis Sapin y era basada en la novela de Henri Castillou.
