It’s a surreal pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in La Vía Lactea (The Milky Way), Spanish director’s French film that’s sorta about the Camino de Santiago in the surrealist of ways. Es una peregrinación surrealista a Santiago de Compostela en La Vía Lactea, una película francesa del director español Luis Buñuel que tiene algo del Camino de Santiago en la manera más surrealista. 

Pierre (Paul Frankeur) and Jean (Laurent Terzieff) have decided to go on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It’s 1969, before the Camino’s popularity began to really surge again in the 1980s. They are fleeing their town in France and want to arrive by any means possible. (They’re not going to get a Compostela if they continue to hitchhike like that!)  Along the way, instead of running into other pilgrims, they run into various Christian doctrines, beliefs and heresies throughout the years. The journey is more throughout the history of the Catholic religion than it is from point A to Point B, and we do get to see Jesus (Bernard Verley) in everyday situations. Pierre (Paul Frankeur) y Jean (Laurent Terzieff) han decidido hacer una peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela. Es 1969, antes de la popularidad del Camino empezó de subir de nuevo en los años 80. Están huyendo de su pueblo en Francia y quieren llegar a Santiago en cualquier manera posible. (No van a conseguir una Compostela si siguen haciendo autostop así). Por el camino, en lugar de cruzar con otros peregrinos, cruzan con varias doctrinas, creencias y herejías durante la historia de cristianismo. El viaje es más por la historia de la religión católica que es desde Punto A a Punto B. También vemos Jesús (Bernard Verley) en situaciónes cotidianas.

SPOILER ALERT The film does end with our “heroes” arriving to Santiago, but with the news that there Saint James is not buried there. AVISO DE ESPOILER. La película acaba con los “héroes” llegando a Santiago para enterarse que Santiago no está enterrado allí. 

A disclaimer ends the film: “Everything in this film concerning the Catholic religion and the heresies it has provoked, especially from the dogmatic point of view, is rigorously exact. The texts and citations are taken either direct from Scripture, or modern and ancient works on theology and ecclesiastical history”. Un aviso de descargo de responsabilidad acaba la película: “Todo en esta película sobre la religión católica y las herejías que ha provocado, sobre todo desde el punto de vista dogmático, es rigurosamente exacto. Los textos y las citas se toman directamente de la Escritura, o obras modernas y antiguas sobre la teología y la historia eclesiástica “.

For me, this is one of Buñuel’s best films. Although it has two characters trying to make it to Santiago, it has nothing to do with the Camino and more an examination and discussion of religion and the impact it has had. It’s bizarre and beautiful (how I’m also describing the bizarre, beautiful, brilliant and amazing Season 3 of Twin Peaks by the way!). Para mí, es una de las mejores películas de Buñuel. Aunque tiene dos personajes intentando llegar a Santiago, no tiene nada que ver con el Camino y es más un examen y debate de religión y el impacto que ha tenido. Es rara y bonita (como también explico la tercera temporada de Twin Peaks, que es rara, bonita, genial y increíble, por cierto). 

I originally saw the film in 2015, and ever since I’ve meant to write about it here. I actually decided to do the Buñuel Project partially for this film.  It is one of my fave films from the director. Vi la película por la primera vez en 2015, y desde entonces he querido escribir de ella aquí. De hecho, decidí hacer el Proyecto Buñuel en parte por esta película. Es una de mis películas preferidas del director. 

Buñuel was a well-known atheist. I still believe (or more I want to believe) in Christianity. I see the film as raising interesting points that are to make people think, question religion and themselves and inspire them to grow. Buñuel era conocido por ser ateo. Todavía creo en cristianismo…o al menos quiero creer. Creo que la película inspira muchas buenas preguntas que hacen la gente pensar, preguntar sobre su propia religión y ellos mismos y inspira a ellos crecer.
