Spanish director Luis Buñuel called his 1952 flick Una mujer sin amor (A Woman Without Love) the worst film he ever made. El director español Luis Buñuel dijo que su película de 1952 Una mujer sin amor era la peor película que hizo en su vida.

Do I agree? No. ¿Estoy de acuerdo? No. 

Do I want to type “like a fish without a bicycle” every time I type the name of the movie? Well, yes, I do. ¿Quiero escribir “es como un pescado sin una bicicleta” cada vez que escribo el nombre de la película? Pues…sí. 

Rosario (Rosario Granados) is married to a man much older than her, Don Carlos Montero (Julio Villareal). When their son Carlitos misbehaves and Don Carlos locks him up, Carlitos runs away and is discovered by Julio (Tito Junco). After Julio returns Carlitos home, Julio begins to hang out with Rosario and the two start an affair. They are about to run away together when Don Carlos has a heart attack and Rosario has to stay. Rosario (Rosario Granados) está casada con un hombre muy mayor que ella, Don Carlos Montero (Julio Villareal). Cuando su hijo Carlitos se comporta mal y Don Carlos se cierra dentro de una habitación como castigo, Carlitos se escapa y después es descubierto por Julio (Tito Junco). Después de Julio vuelve a Carlitos a su casa, Julio empieza a conocer con Rosario y los dos se lían. Van a escaparse juntos para empezar una vida nueva, pero Don Carlos sufre un infarto y Rosario tiene que quedarse con él. 

Twenty years later, Carlitos is grown up (and goes by Carlos), and he and his brother Miguel are graduating from medical school. Miguel receives news that he has received an inheritance from an old family friend he never met…Julio. They soon figure out that Julio is his father, which threatens to destroy the family. Viente años después, Carlitos ya es adulto (y prefiere ser llamado “Carlos”), y él y su hermano Miguel están a punto de graduarse de la escuela de medicina. Miguel se entera de las noticias que ha recibido una herencia de un antiguo amigo familiar que nunca ha conocido…Julio. Después se dan cuenta que Julio es su padre biológico, que amenaza destruir la familia. 

The film is pure Mexican melodrama and has none of the token surreal Buñuel, which is probably why he hated the film. It was based on Guy de Maupassant’s Pierre et Jean and the script was written by Jaime Salvador. La película es melodrama mexicana pura y no tiene ningun toque surrealista de Buñuel, y por eso, explica porque no le gustaba su propia película. Es basada en la novela Pierre et Jean de Guy De Maupassant, y el guionista era Jaime Salvador. 

It’s not a bad film, but it’s not memorable either. It held my interest more than Robinson Crusoe and Abismos de pasión for sure. No es una película mala, pero tampoco es muy memorable. Me capturó la atención más que Robinson Crusoe y Abismos de pasión, es cierto.

Rating: B-
