Alcoi, Alacant

Even after nine years in the Greatest Peninsula in the world, I am still able to find cities that impress me with their beauty and charm. I am so glad I had the opportunity to cross out Alcoy (Alcoi en Valenciano) from my Valencian Bucket List, as it is a treasure. Después de 9 años en La Mejor Península del Mundo, todavía puedo encontrar ciudades que me impresionan con su belleza y encanto. Estoy muy alegre haber tenido la oportunidad para tachar Alcoy (Alcoi en valenciano) de mi Bucket List valenciano, como es una joya.

From Valencia, there are two options without a car. There are a few trains that leave from Valencia Nord (you may have to switch trains in Xàtiva), and there are several buses with the Travicoi company that leave from the Valencia bus station. As of June 2017, the train was a bit cheaper, especially if bought as a round trip. Alicante probably offers the same options, seeing as it’s in the province of Alicante. Hay dos opciones de llegar desde Valencia si no dispones de un coche. Hay unos trenes que salen desde València Nord (quizás tienes que cambiar de tren en Xàtiva), y hay unos autobuses con la compañía Travicoi que sale desde la estación de autobuses de València. En junio de 2017, el tren sale un poco más barato, especialmente si compras un billete de ida y vuelta. Alicante probablemente tiene las mismas opciones, como Alcoy está ubicado en la provincia de Alicante.

The ride took about 2 hours. The advertised wifi wasn’t working, but I had a book to entertain myself with. I got off the bus in front of the train station, and I would later return by train. The train ride is much more scenic, by the way. El viaje tardó unas dos horas. Aunque dijo que había wifi, no funcionó. No pasa nada como tenía un libro para entretenerme. Bajé del autobús en la parada enfrente de la estación de tren, y volví a València por tren. El viaje por tren pasa por paisaje más bonito, por cierto.

Alcoy has a lot to see and do. The views of the older part of town from the bridge crossing the River Serpis, or River Riquer (not sure which it was) are amazing. I crossed the Pont de Sant Jordi and explored the old town. I stopped at the Tourism Office, and they suggested a route I take through the city in order to fully take advantage what little time I had there. Alcoy tiene mucho para ver y hacer. Las vistas de la parte más antigua de la ciudad desde un puente que cruce el Río Serpis o el Río Riquer (no estoy seguro de cual era) son impresionantes. Crucé el Pont de Sant Jordi y exploré el casco antiguo. Visité la Oficina de Turismo, y me surgieron una ruta por la ciudad para aprovechar bien el poco tiempo que tenía allí.

The city has 95,526 residents, but it feels bigger and smaller at the same time. It’s famous in Spain for its Moors and Christians festival every April (it’s the closest weekend to Sant Jordi, April 23). La ciudad tiene 95.526 habitantes, pero se siente más grande y más pequeña a la misma vez. Es famoso en España para su festival de Moros y Cristianos en abril (es el fin de semana más cercano a Sant Jordi, el 23 de abril.)

I started my city route in the Plaça de Dins, which is quaint and offers a lot of places to have a relaxing café con leche or tapas or whatever. I then went past some of the unique buildings. Most were closed to tourists, or I had arrived late and they were already closed for the weekend. Ah well. They were still beautiful on the outside, and I can imagine how they would appear on the inside. Empecé la ruta de la ciudad en la Plaça de Dins, que es pintoresco y ofrece muchos sitios para tomar un relaxing café con leche, tapas o lo que quieras. Después, deambulé las calles y vi unos edificios únicos. La mayoría estaban cerrados, o llegué tarde y ya estaban cerrados por el fin de semana. Bueno. Todavía podía verlos por afuera y eran bonitos. Puedo imaginar como son por dentro.

There is a part of the old city walls, but it didn’t impress me much. My introduction to Spain was a semester in Toledo, so city walls are hard to impress me. Still, I love seeing them. Hay una parte de las murallas antiguas, pero me decepcionaron un poco. La primera vez que viví en España, viví en Toledo, y por eso, las murallas lo tienen difícil para impresionarme, aunque todavía me encanta verlas.

Alcoy would be a great place for hiking opportunities. The nature parks Carrascal de la Font Roja and Sierra de Mariola are nearby, and the Castillo (Castle) of Barchell is located in the Valle de Polop at an altitude of 800 metres. I saw it on the way there and would have loved to have time to climb up to it. Alcoy sería un base genial para hacer senderismo. Hay dos parques naturales a lado, el parque Carrascal de la Font Roja y el parque Sierra de Mariola. También hay el Castillo de Barchell, que está situado en la Valle de Polop con una altitud de 800 metros. Lo vi por el camino y me habría encantado disponer del tiempo para subirlo.

Basically, Alcoy has too much to do in just one day, but I am grateful for the opportunity to have finally visited it. Basicamente, Alcoi tiene demasiado para hacer en solo un día, pero agradezco el hecho que tenía la oportunidad de visitarla por fin.

Abismos de pasión (1953)

Spanish director Luis Buñuel takes on the classic Emily Brontë Wuthering Heights, which in Spanish is called “Cumbres Borrascosas”, not “Abismos de pasión”, for the nitpickers. Director español Luis Buñuel hace una versión de la novela clásica de Emily Brontë, Cumbres Borrascosas. Abismos de pasión es un nombre completamente distinto de la novela pero bueno.

The film, for me, however, was more an “abyss” of boredom and torture getting through it. Para mi, sin embargo, la película era más un abismo de aburrimiento y tortura para acabar de verla.

I’ll be honest right now, before I start the review, that I’m not a *gasp* real fan of Wuthering Heights and actually prefer by a ton Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which was way ahead of its time with feminism and robots. (Mew mew beanz for whomever gets the reference.) Os voy a ser sincero, antes de empezar la critica, que no soy un fan de Cumbres Borrascosas. ¡Ya lo sé! De hecho, prefiero la novela de su hermana Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre, que era muy precoz por su época con feminismo y los robots. (Puntos para los que reconoce la referencia).

Alejandro (Jorge Mistral) returns to the hacienda of Catalina (Irasema Dilián) only to find her married to Eduardo (Ernesto Alonso). Catalina, who is pregnant, is torn between the two men. Alejandro seduces Isabel (Lilia Prado), who is Eduardo’s sister, as revenge. Passions and tension grow until the end, which has a surreal appearance, of course. No spoilers. Alejandro (Jorge Mistral) vuelve a la hacienda de Catalina (Irasema Dilián) para enterarse que ya se ha casado con Eduardo (Ernesto Alonso). Catalina, quien está embarazada, no puede elegir cual hombre quiere más. Alejandro seduce a Isabel (Lilia Prado), la hermana de Eduardo, en su plan de venganza. Las pasiones y las tensiones crecen hasta el final, que tiene una apariencia surrealista, desde luego. No spoilers.

I can’t explain why the film didn’t work for me. It just didn’t. I was bored to tears. I guess Mexican hacienda wasn’t a good transplant for the English moors of the novel. However, as I said, I couldn’t get into the novel either so…No puedo explicar porque no me gustaba más la película. Solo no me gustaba. Me aburrí mucho durante la película. Quizás, para mi, la hacienda mexicana no era un buen trasplante por los páramos ingleses de la novela. Sin embargo, como ya he dicho, tampoco me gustaba mucho la novela.

Buñuel wrote the script in 1931 with Pierre Unik but was unable to get financing. According to IMDB, producer Óscar Dancigers would only permit Buñuel to make the film if he used actors already cast for a musical comedy, and Buñuel was not satisfied with the results. Is he ever satisfied? Buñuel escribió el guión en 1931 con Pierre Unik pero no podía conseguir los fondos para hacerla. Según IMDB, el productor Óscar Dancigers solo permitiría a Buñuel hacer la película si Buñuel usara actores que ya tenían contratados por una comedia musical. Buñuel no era satisfecho con los resultados. Pero bueno…¿hay alguna vez que Buñuel sí, era satisfecho?

I’m sure fans of the novel will appreciate this one more than I did. Buñuel did his best to make the characters authentic to the novel’s version. Estoy seguro que los fans de la novela apreciarían la película más que yo. Buñuel intentó hacer los personajes auténticos a los personajes de la novela.

Puzol to El Puig.

Summer has arrived in Valencia, and with it the “caloret”. I’m trying to keep in shape for the Camino with short hikes in the heat, so I did an easy route from the town of Puzol to the town of El Puig, which I already explored last November. El verano ya ha llegado a Valencia, y con ello, también el “caloret”. Estoy intentando prepararme para el Camino con rutas cortas en el calor, y por eso hice una ruta fácil desde el pueblo de Puzol hasta el pueblo de El Puig, donde ya había explorado el noviembre pasado.

There are several trains to Puzol (Puçol in Valenciano) a town of 19,018 residents, from Valencia a day, and there is also a bus that goes to their beach. It’s about a half hour from Valencia Nord and even less from the Valencia Cabanyal station. Hay muchos trenes de Cercanías que sale desde Valencia a Puzol (Puçol en valenciano), un pueblo de 19.018 habitantes, todos los días. Tarda sobre una media hora desde Valencia Nord y aún menos desde la estación de Valencia Cabanyal.

Puzol has some old churches, a Lookout Tower and a windmill. I meandered the streets for a bit before completing the short route I wanted to do that day, the road that connects it to neighbouring village El Puig. Puzol tiene unas iglesias antiguas, un torre medieval y un molino. Deambulé las calles un rato antes de hacer la ruta cortita que tenía pensado, la carretera que conecta Puzol con su vecino El Puig.

The walk was entirely along a road, el Camí El Puig, and it took about 45 minutes to complete. I was wanting to get used to the heat, and I wanted to take advantage of a free Wednesday afternoon, so it was a short and sweet walk. La ruta era completamente por la carretera, El Camí El Puig, y tardé unos 45 minutos en llegar a El Puig. Quería acostumbrarme al calor, y quería aprovechar un tarde de míercoles que tenía libre. Entonces, era una ruta cortita pero bien.

I had been in El Puig in November, and I regretted not completing the hike due to the cold I was recovering from. El Puig is a bit different in the summer than the autumn. I enjoyed a second visit before catching the train back to Valencia. El Puig has a population of 8893 (2010 statistics) and is famous for its monestary. Había estado en El Puig una vez antes, en noviembre, y lamenté no haber poder hacer la ruta entre los dos pueblos dado al hecho que estaba resfriado. El Puig es un poco diferente en el verano que el otoño. Disfruté una segunda visita antes de coger el tren de vuelta a Valencia. El Puig tiene una población de 8893, según las estadísticas de 2010, y es famoso por su monasterio.

Of the two villages, I think I prefer El Puig. Entre los dos pueblos, creo que prefiero El Puig.

Susana (Demonio y Carne) (1951).

Oh Susana! Oh. Wait. Spanish director Luis Buñuel probably didn’t know that song when he directed this classic Mexican cinema film, also known as “The Devil and the Flesh.” ¡Oh Susana! Espera. Director español Luis Buñuel probablemente no conocía esta canción cuando hizo esta película clásica mexicana, también conocido como “Demonio y carne”.

Susana (Rosita Quintana is excellent as the title character) is in a reformatory for wayward girls and finds herself in solitary for bad behaviour. After praying to God for help, she is able to escape on a dark and stormy night. She finds herself at Don Guadalupe (Fernando Soler)’s ranch. They take her in, and she slowly tries to make the family her own. The son Alberto (Luis López Somota) is taken by her, as is Don Guadalupe himself (along with another worker). Doña Carmen (Matilde Palou), on the other hand, isn’t falling for it. How far will Susana go, and how far will Doña Carmen go to protect her family from her? Susana (Rostia Quinta es excelente en su papel de protagonista) está en un reformatorio para chicas desobedientes, y está encerrado en solitario para mala comportamiento. Después de rezar a Dios para pedir ayuda, encuentra la manera de escape en una noche oscura y tormentosa. Encuentra la hacienda de Don Guadalupe (Fernando Soler). Le dan comida y trabajo, y poco a poco, intenta hacerse parte de la familia. El hijo Alberto (Luis López Somota) está enamorada de ella, y Don Guadalupe también. (Y también otro trabajador). A Doña Carmen (Matilde Palou), por el otro lado, no le cae bien para nada. ¿Que hará Susana, y que hará la Doña Carmen para proteger su familia de Susana?

I have to say I really enjoyed this film. I watched it while killing time at the Santander airport, and it was the best possible thing to do whilst at such a small airport. I love characters like Susana, although in real life, I would be helping Doña Carmen, I’m sure. He de decir que disfruté ver esta película. La vi mientras estaba haciendo tiempo en el aeropuerto de Santander, y era la mejor cosa hacer cuando estaba haciendo tiempo en un aeropuerto tan pequeño. Me encantan personajes como Susana, aunque en la vida real, ayudaría a la Doña Carmen, seguro.

We see a touch of Buñuel’s fascination of people fascinated by religion, and there is an appearance from some chickens, which I’ve noticed is a running motif in his films that I’m sure some graduate student out there has analyzed to death in a terrific paper (If you’ve written one, I want to read it!) Vemos un toque de la fascinación de Buñuel de la gente fascinada de religión, y también vemos sus gallinas, que he notado que suelen salir gallinas en sus películas. Seguro que algún estudiante de máster o doctorado tiene una tesis genial sobre el tema. (Si fueras tu que la has escrito, me encantaría leerla.)

The melodrama was written by Buñuel, Jaime Salvador and Rodolfo Usigli, based on the novel by Manuel Reachi and partly based on the 1929 Hollywood film The Squall. La melodrama fue escrito por Buñuel, Jaime Salvador y Rodolfo Usigli, y es basada en la novela por Manuel Reachi y también en parte en la película de Hollywood de 1929, The Squall.

The happy ending is somewhat of a satire of happy endings in general as it goes to the extreme of happiness, but whatever, it’s fun. It never goes too far, but in 1951 Mexico, the character of Susana must have been quite a shock. El final feliz es algo de sátira de finales felices en general, como va al extremo de felicidad. Lo importante es que es divertida. Nunca va demasiado allá, pero en México de 1951, el personaje de Susana probablemente fue un shock.

Then again, Buñuel being Buñuel, even early Buñuel, they might not have been too shocked after all. Pero bueno, como Buñuel es Buñuel, incluso durante sus primeras películas, quizás no fuera demasiado shock al final.

Visa Renewal in Asturias.

It’s that time of year again, where I have to renew my visa in Spain. If only I could get a working visa and not a student visa *sigh* Ya es la época del año, cuando me toca renovar mi visado en España. Ojalá pudiera conseguir un visado de trabajo y no visado de estudiante…

I had to go to Oviedo in Asturias to do it, as that’s where I’m currently assigned to. I’m not sure what I’m going to do about the situation (read more about it here). Este año, tenía que ir hasta Oviedo en Asturias para hacerlo, como es donde estoy asignado en este moment. Todavía no sé seguro que haré sobre la situación (si quieres puedes leer más sobre la situación aquí.

The renewal went fine, I think (with Spanish bureaucracy, one just never knows for sure until the “resuelto favorable” comes through!). I flew to Santander on Thursday and caught a BlaBlaCar to Oviedo where I stayed two nights. Creo que la prórroga me ha ido bien (con la burocracia española, ¡nunca se sabe hasta la “resuelto favorable” llegue!)

I had all the paperwork ready and was at Extranjería at 9 am. I had to go to another office in the same complex. There was no wait whatsoever, and I handed my documents in and it was fine. I had to go to another office to submit the tax for the NIE (numéro de identificación de extranjero (foreigner ID number)), where they thought I was changing my visa to a work visa. I WISH. Tenía todo el papeleo listo y estaba en Extranjería a las 9, pero tenía que ir a otra oficina en el mismo complejo para presentar papeles. No tenía que esperar nada. Les di los documentos y todo bien. Después, tenía que ir a otra oficina pare entregar la tasa del NIE (numéro de identificación de extranjero), donde pensaba que estaba cambiando el visado a un visado de trabajo. OJALÁ.

After the rain stopped, I caught a bus to nearby Gijón. Oviedo is the capital of Asturias with a population of 222,917, and Gijón is 20 km (12 miles) away. Gijón is the largest city in Asturias with a population of 276,001. Después de la lluvia paró, cogí un autobús al próximo Gijón. Oviedo es la capital de Asturias con una población de 222.917, y Gijón está a 20 kilometros. Gijón es la ciudad más grande de Asturias con una población de 276.001.

I had lunch in Gijón…typical fabada of the region. Comí en Gijón…la fabada típica de la región.

Later, I went for a short walk around the Cimavilla and the old town, admiring the views of the Cantabrian Sea. The rain was holding off, and I found myself wishing that I could live in Gijón instead of Oviedo. Ok, I really want to stay in Valencia, but her emails…Después, di una vuelta por la Cimavilla y el casco antiguo, admirando las vistas del Mar Cantábrico. No estaba lloviendo, y me encontré deseando vivir en Gijón y no Oviedo. Ok, vale, lo que quiero realmente es quedarme en Valencia, pero…

Later I returned to Oviedo and roamed the streets of this beautiful city. I love the Plaza de Paraguas (Umbrella Square doesn’t have the same ring to it.) Luego volví a Oviedo para pasear por la ciudad bonita. Me encanta la plaza de Paraguas. (Suena mejor en castellano, de verdad.)

Saturday morning I caught the bus back to Santander and flew back to Valencia with Ryan Air, safe and sound. El sábado por la mañana, cogí el autobús a Santander y volví con Ryan Air y llegué a Valencia sin problema.

Asturias has a lot to offer, I know, and it is extremely beautiful. I wish I could feel more excited about a year there, but my heart just belongs to Valencia. Asturias tiene mucha de ofrecer, ya lo sé, y es muy preciosa. Quiero sentirme más emocionado sobre un año allí, pero mi corazón pertenece a Valencia.

Santander City Hike.

Santander, the capital of Cantabria, population 178,465, is one of the major cities of Northern Spain. I’ve been a few times, and I was ready to visit it again while on my way to Asturias to renew my visa. It was cheaper to fly Ryan Air to Santander from Valencia and then catch a BlaBlaCar to Oviedo. Santander, la capital de Cantabria, población 178,465, es una de las ciudades más importantes del norte de España. He estado varias veces, y estaba listo visitarla otra vez durante mi viaje a Asturias para renovar el visado. Era más barato volar con Ryan Air a Santander desde Valencia y después coger un BlaBlaCar a Oviedo.

I had a few hours to kill, so I decided to do what I call a city-hike. The Magdalena Peninsula is about 3 kilometres from the bus station. The peninsula is home to the Palacio de la Magdalena, the former summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and an open air “zoo” where you can see penguins, sea lions and seals. Tenía unas horas para perder, y decidí hacer lo que llamo una ruta de ciudad, “city hike”. La Península Magdalena esta a unos 3 kilómetros de la estación de autobuses. La península tiene el Palacio de la Magdalena, la residencia de verano del Rey Alfonso XIII y también tiene un zoo de aire libre donde se puede ver pingüinos, leones marinos y focas.

I was lucky and arrived to the peninsula just as they were feeding the sea lions and stuck around to see the feeding of the penguins. The sea lions and seals are fed at 17.00 every day except Monday, whereas the penguins eat around 12.00 and 17.30. The penguins were being lazy, and a seagull absconded with one of their fish. Tenía suerte y llegué a la península justo cuando estaban alimentando los leones marinos y me quedé para ver la alimentación de los pingüinos. Alimentan a los leones mariono a las 17 todos los días menos lunes, mientras alimentan a los pingüinos dos veces al día, sobre las 12.00 y las 17.30. Los pingüinos eran vagos, y una gaviota les robó un pescado que era su comida.

I had an ice cream, probably one of the few I’ll eat this summer (I try to avoid it because I gain weight very easily). I seem to always have an ice cream in Santander. Tomé un helado, que no suelo hacer porque me engordo fácilmente. Siempre tomo helado en Santander, no sé porque.

The walk back seemed to go by quicker. La vuelta me pasó más rápido que la ida.

It’s an easy walk. Just head along the coast of the bay, say “buen Camino” to any peregrinos passing by, and head along Avenida Reina Victoria or along the beach to the peninsula. Es un camino fácil. Caminas por la costa de la bahía, dices “buen Camino” a los peregrinos que puedes ver, y sigues por la Avenida Reina Victora o por la playa hasta la península.

Gran Casino (1947)

Spanish director Luis Buñuel made his full feature-length Mexican debut with the 1947 musical Gran Casino. El director español Luis Buñuel hizo su primera película mexicana y su primera película de larga duración en 1947 con el musical Gran Casino.

Two prisoners, Gerardo (Jorge Negrete) and Demetrio (Julio Villarreal) go to work for big oil tycoon José Enrique (Francisco Jambrina) after their escape. When José Enrique disappears, his sister, Mercedes (Libertad Lamarque) shows up and goes undercover at the nearby nightclub Gran Casino to find out what happened, suspecting the duo who had escaped from prison. Dos presos, Gerardo (Jorge Negrete) y Demetrio (Julio Villarreal) empiezan a trabajar por el empresario magnate de petróleo José Enrique (Francisco Jambrina) después de su escape de prisión. The film is considered by many to be his worst. While not his best, I wouldn’t call it his worst. The musical numbers are typical of the era. It was a decent movie but nothing special. All the IMDB critics always say it’s his worst, and it has a rating of 6.0. It was written by Maurcio Magdaleno and Edmundo Báez and based on a novel by Michel Veber. Muchos creen que es la peor película de Buñuel. Aunque para mi no es su mejor, no puedo decir que es su peor. Las canciones son típicas de la época. Era una película normal y nada especial. Todos los reseñas de IMBD siempre dicen que es su peor, y tiene un medio de 6.0. Los guionistas eran Maurcio Magdaleno y Edmundo Baéz y era basada en la novela de Michel Veber.

I’m more fascinated by Libertad Lamarque, who escaped to Mexico after Juan Perón chose Eva Perón (Evita…don’t cry for me Argentina) over her. Her story, in hindsight, which is always 20-20, would be more fascinating than this movie! Me interesa más Libertad Lamarque, quien huyó a México después de Juan Perón elegió a Eva Peron (Evita…no me llores por mi Argentina) en lugar de ella. Su historia, ahora que sabemos la historia, sería más fascinante que esta película.

It was Buñuel’s first full length movie and return to being a director for the first time in 15 years. He had fled war-torn Spain and was living in exile in Mexico. It was pretty obvious he was trying to jumpstart his career with a moneymaker. It could be seen as a critique of the rich, as we all know he loves to do. Era la primera película de larga duración de Buñuel y su gran vuelta a ser director por la primera vez desde hace 15 años. Huyó de España durante la guerra y estaba en exilio en México. Era bastante obvio que estaba intentando empezar su carrera de nueva con algo seguro de ganar dinero. Puede ser una critica de los ricos, como todos sabemos que le encantó hacer.

Fun fact. Stars Lamarque and Negrete demanded that they have the same number of songs but refused to sing together. Film stars have always been demanding. Un poco de trivial divertido: Los protagonistas Lamarque y Negree exigieron tener el mismo numéro de canciones y no quería cantar juntos. Los actores de cine siempre han sido exigente.

Serra Calderona.

The Serra Calderona is a mountain range near the Valencia capital located between the provinces of Valencia and Castellón. I had gone once before with a friend to El Garbí back in October, and when I had the opportunity to go with my school on an excursion, I seized the day. La Serra Calderona es una cordillera cerca a la capital de València situado entre las provincias de Valencia y Castellón. He ido una vez antes con un amigo a El Garbí en octubre, y cuando tenía la oportunidad ir en una ruta de senderismo con el instituto donde trabajo, la aproveché.

It took about a half hour from Valencia. We stopped near the village of Serra and climbed to the nearby Mirador de Resbaladores. The views were, as always, spectacular. We had lunch at the Mirador. Tarda sobre una media hora desde València capital. Paramos cerca del pueblo de Serra y subimos al Mirador de Resbaladores. No estaba muy lejos. Las vistas eran, como siempre, espectaculares. Comemos en el Mirador.

It was a circular route. It was nice to have a guide explain to us more about the history of hiking the mountains and why they were trails (they had to find the easiest way to the summit.) The day ended with a visit to Serra, a quaint village of 3074 residents, where the bus was waiting to take us back to Valencia. Era una ruta circular. Me gustaba tener un guía explicarnos todo de la historia de senderismo de la Serra Calderona y porque había senderos (tenían que buscar la manera más fácil a la cima.) El día terminó con una visita a Serra, un pueblo pintoresco de 3074 habitantes, donde el autobús estaba esperándonos para llevarnos a Valencia.

I have to say, this was one of the better excursions I have gone on with a school in Spain. I wasn’t paying too much attention to the climb and just enjoying the moment. I also had to make sure that none of the students were in the photo for various Spanish privacy laws. He de decir que era uno de las mejores excursiones que he tenido con un colegio en España. No hice mucho caso a la subida y disfruté del momento. No hice muchas fotos porque hay leyes de privacidad en España y no quería que saliera ningún alumno en una foto del blog.

Happy Anniversary to SetMeravelles! ¡Feliz aniversario a SetMeravelles!

It was three years ago today, on 12-June-2014, that this blog went live. Un día como hoy, hace tres años, el 12 de junio de 2014, que estrenó este blog.

Three years later, and it’s still going strong. I still have three provinces left to visit in Spain and a lot of “meravelles” to discover in the other provinces. Tres años después, y sigo con el proyecto. Todavía me quedan tres provincias para visitar en España y muchas “meravelles” para descubrir en las otras provincias.

I thought I’d use this as a fun post but at the same time state a mission statement. Pensaba que usaría esta entrada como una entrada divertida pero a la misma vez crear una mision.

I would love Setmeravelles to be the go-to site for information about Spain. I also want to make it the go-to site for information on Spanish cinema and entertainment too. Me encantaría que Setmeravelles sea el mejor blog para información de España y también que sea el mejor blog para información de cine español y entretenimiento español también.

By the time the fourth anniversary roles around, I would like to have 500 followers at the blog, 500 followers on Twitter, 100 likes on Facebook, and 400 followers on Instagram. I would love even more, but I am pretty introverted and am clueless at SEO and marketing! Cuando llega el cuatro aniversario de Setmeravelles, me gustaría tener al menos 500 seguidores en el blog, 500 seguidores en Twitter, 100 me gusta en Facebook y 400 seguidores en Instragram. Me gustaría tener aún más, desde luego, pero soy bastante introvertido y no sé nada de SEO ni hacer marketing.

Parque Fluvial del Turia: La Presa-Riba-roja.

I did a stretch of the 35-km long Parque Fluvial del Turia back in February, and I’ve been wanting to see this famous dam I didn’t make it to then. I was recovering from a cold, so I didn’t want to do much, but I did want to do something now that my time in Valencia is most likely coming to a close. Hice una parte de los 35 kilómetros del Parque Fluvial del Turia en febrero, y he querido volver para ver la presa conocida. No llegué en febrero. Este fin de semana, estaba recuperando de un constipado y no quería hacer mucho, pero quería hacer algo como mi tiempo en Valencia está acabándome.

On a lazy spring Sunday afternoon, I decided to stop being lazy and caught the Valencia metro (Line 9) to stop La Presa (dam in Spanish). It was about a 20-minute walk to the dam, and, of course, I got confused by Google Maps. I found myself there anyway and took some time to enjoy the beauty. Una tarde tranquila de primavera, dejé de hacerme el vago y cogí la línea 9 del metro de Valencia hasta la parada La Presa. Tardé sobre 20 minutos en caminar a la presa, y claro, como siempre, me confundí con Google Maps. Encontré el camino correcto y tomé tiempo para disfrutar de la belleza.

I decided to walk on to the nearby village Riba-Roja de Túria, a town of 21,499 residents located at the end of Line 9 on the Valencia metro. Después, decidí caminar a un pueblo cercano, Riba-Roja de Túria. Es un pueblo de 21.499 personas ubicado al final de la Línea 9 del metro de Valencia.

It was an easy and pretty walk, perfect for this time of year, by the Río Turia. I liked the bridges. There were a few people out for a Sunday stroll, and even more bikers. Era un paseo fácil y bonito, perfecto para hacer en este época del año, a lado del Río Turia. Me gustaban mucho los puentes. Había bastante personas paseando, como era domingo, y había aún más ciclistas.

The Parque Fluvial is perfect for strolls, and for those who want something more active, they can do more kilometres. El Parque Fluvial es perfecto para pasear, y para los que quieren ser más activo, siempre hay más kilómetros para andar.
