The dream explodes.

Another academic year is over. It has been one of the most challenging (due to external factors) academic years I have faced, and it does not have a happy ending, I’m afraid to say. Otro año académico se ha acabado. Ha sido un año bastante difícil dado a factores externos. Desgraciadamente, no tiene un final feliz. 

After being told that there was no way that I would be able to renew in the Comunitat Valenciana next year, they allowed me to reorder my preferences. I did as I was told as staying in Spain is my goal. I could have requested to return to the Basque Country, but I felt that would be a step back. I went with Asturias, thinking it could be a new adventure, it’s close to the Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo, and it is beautiful. I went with the Balearic Islands as my number two, where I could still have my good weather and Catalán dialect, but I wasn’t really feeling it due to the tourists and possible island syndrome. Después de decirme que no había manera que podía renovar en la Comunitat Valenciana por el año que viene, me dieron la oportunidad de cambiar las preferencias. Les hice caso, como el objetivo es quedarme en España para siempre. Pensaba durante dos segundos en volver a Euskadi, pero pensaba que sería un paso atrás. Elegí Asturias, pensando que podría ser una aventura nueva, está a lado del Camino del Norte y el Camino Primitivo, y es precioso. Mi segunda opción era las Islas Baleares, donde hay un buen clima y hablan un dialecto de catalán, pero no me apetecía ir allí mucho dado a las masas de turistas y la posibilidad de síndrome de isla. 

I ended up getting Asturias, and I tried to deal with the grief I was feeling about leaving Valencia. This week, it exploded. Al final, me asignaron Asturias. Intenté pensar en positivo, pero me daba mucha pena solo pensar en irme de Valencia. Esta semana, el dolor ha explotado. 

I am a secondary teacher, and I’m going to be honest. I don’t like children. I’m sure YOUR child is the exception to the rule, of course! I work well with teens, and I somehow can get their respect most of the time. Soy un profesor de secundaria, y voy a ser sincero. No me gustan los niños pequeños. ¡Seguro que TU niño/niña es la excepción a eso, desde luego! Trabajo bien con los adolescentes, y normalmente puedo ganar su respeto. (Siempre hay excepciones con adolescentes.)

They assigned me to two primary schools, ignoring my request for secondary, ignoring my explanations of why I work well with secondary, and of why secondary teachers cannot teach primary and vice versa. Is it just me, or shouldn’t they want the best for the students? I am not cut out to teach primary. Me asignaron a dos colegios de primaria, ignorando completamente mi petición de trabajar con secundaria, ignorando completamente mis razones porque trabajo bien con secundaria y porque los profesores de secundaria no pueden dar clases a primaria y viceversa. ¿Solo soy yo? ¿No deberían querer lo mejor para los alumnos? No puedo dar clases a primaria. Punto. 

Looking at the weather forecast full of rain for Oviedo, my heart sinks. Rain affects my mental health stability. Mirando el tiempo para esta semana en Oviedo, hunde el corazón. La lluvia afecta mucho la salud mental y la estabilidad. 

Asturias is a beautiful region with great food, and everyone I’ve ever met from Asturias has been extremely welcoming and friendly. It has a lot of opportunities for hiking, which gives me a lot of opportunities to write about. Asturias es una región preciosa con buena comida. Todos los asturianos que he conocido siempre han sido majos, amigables y acogedores. Dispone de muchas oportunidades de senderismo, que me da muchas cosas para escribir en el blog. 

However, my heart is in Valencia. I worked so hard to return. I spent two years in Madrid and three years in Bilbao, wanting to return to Valencia, imagining a life in Valencia. This year has been nothing like I had imagined it during those five years, but I also felt I was building a foundation for a life here. Sin embargo, mi corazón está en Valencia. Trabajé duro durante cinco años para poder volver a Valencia. Estaba en Madrid (que pesadilla) en Madrid y tres años en Bilbao, siempre deseando volver a Valencia, imaginando mi vida en Valencia. Este año no ha sido nada como lo imaginaba durante estos cinco años, pero tambíen creía que iba construyendo una vida aquí, poco a poco. 

That foundation is crumbling down. My mental well being is crumbling down. I am working on finding another job (all it would take is a one-year contract, and I could change my visa legally.) I’ve changed cities six times in nine years, and I am tired of changing. I’m 35 years old, and although I am grateful for the opportunity to be in Spain, I have outgrown my job. La fundación que estaba construyendo está  derrumbándose. La poca salud mental que tengo está derrumbándose. Estoy buscando otro trabajo (solo me hace falta un contrato de un año, y podría cambiar el visado legalmente.) He cambiado de ciudad seis veces en nueve años, y estoy harto de mudanza. Ya tengo 35 años, y aunque agradezco la oportunidad estar en España, el hecho es que ya he sobrepasado mi trabajo. 

I don’t know where I go from here. Writing doesn’t pay the bills, I’m quickly accumulating rejections from publishers like I was J.K. Rowling (one of my heroes! I hate fantasy but love her and love Harry Potter). While working at a language academy isn’t my dream job, it would be a job that I enjoy decently as I pursued my writing and travelling hobbies outside work. I am looking at becoming a translator, and I would also like to help people plan their trips to Spain. It’s just a huge obstacle of who you know and bureaucracy and lack of EU passport. No sé que hacer ahora. Escribir no paga facturas, estoy acumulando rechazos de editoriales rápidamente como si fuera J.K. Rowling (¡una de mis héroes! No me gusta fantasía, pero me encanta ella y me encanta Harry Potter.) Aunque trabajar en una academia de inglés no es el trabajo de mis sueños, es un trabajo que podría disfrutar mientras perseguiría mis aficiones de escribir y viajar fuera de trabajo. Estoy mirando ser traductor, y también me gustaría ayudarle a la gente planificar sus viajes a España. Solo es un obstáculo grande de enchufe y papeleo y falta de un pasaporte de EU. 

There is so much I didn’t get around to this year in Valencia. There are a few hikes I want to go on, I didn’t make it to Mestalla to see Valencia play (their fútbol club has had a horrible season, so something is in the air?), and there are a lot of places I would have liked to visit that are close to Valencia. I would’ve liked to have spent more time in other places. Hay tanto que quería hacer este año en Valencia que no he podido hacer. Hay algunas rutas de senderismo que quería hacer. No he podido ir a Mestalla para ver Valencia jugar (su club de fútbol lo ha pasado fatal esta temporada. ¿Quízas sea algo en el aire?) Hay muchos sitios que me huberia gustado visitar cerca de Valencia. Me gustaría quedarme más tiempo en otros lugares. 

Every time I’ve moved cities in Spain, I’ve been ready for the change. I was a bit sad to leave Bilbao, but I was more excited to have decent weather and to get back to Valencia (and be able to say the word “España” again without being looked at badly :P). Cada vez que me he traslado en España, he estado listo para un cambio. Estaba un poco triste dejar Bilbao, pero me daba más ilusión tener buen clima otra vez y volver a Valencia (y también poder decir la palabra “España” otra vez sin miedo). 

Valencia is my home and I feel more home here than even the Ohio town I was born and raised it. I’m not leaving without a fight. I just don’t have a lot of fight in me right now to be honest. Valencia es mi hogar y me siento más en casa aquí que incluso el pueblo en Ohio donde nací. No voy a irme sin luchar. Solo es que no tengo mucha energía para la lucha, para ser sincero. 

Stay tuned. I’ll be headed to Asturias to start the paperwork to renew my student visa this week. (The rain forecast is breaking my heart). Where I go from there is anyone’s guess. A continuación. Esta semana iré a Asturias para empezar el papeleo de prorrogar el NIE de estudiante. Cada vez que veo que da lluvia para viernes, el corazón llora. Después…¿quién sabe?

Portugal, the Set Meravelles.

Portugal obviously has more than seven meravelles (wonders), and there is a lot left of this wonderful country for me to discover. However, based on my three trips, I have chosen seven that I have seen. I’m sure there are at least 100 waiting for me in the future, if not 1000! Es obvio que Portugal tiene más de siete meravelles (maravillas), y me queda mucho para descubrir. Sin embargo, pensando en los tres viajes que he hecho a Portugal, he elegido siete que he visto. Seguro que hay al menos 100 esperándome en el futuro, si no 1000!

1. The Streets of Lisboa (and their trams!)

The streets of Lisbon are incredible. They will take you to the most visited places like the São Jorge Castle, the Sé Cathedral, the Barrio Alto, the many plazas, the oldest bookshop Bertrand, even out to Belem. If you’re too tired to walk, they even have cable cars or trams to take your to your destination, and you can watch the world go by. Las calles de Lisboa son increíbles. Te llevarán a los sitios más turísticos como el Castillo de São Jorge, la Sé (Catedral), el Barrio Alto, los plazas bonitas, la librería más antigua del mundo Bertrand, incluso hasta Belem. Si estás demasiado cansado/a para caminar, tienen tranvías chulas para llevarte al tu destino mientras pasas el mundo. 

2. Belem

The Torre de São Vicente, better known as the Torre de Belem (Bethleham in Portuguese)  was built to help protect the mouth of the River Tejo between 1514 and 1519. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Despite popular belief, it was not built in the middle of the river and the 1755 earthquake did not re-route the river so it sits near the shore. El torre de São Vicente, mejor conocido como el Torre de Belem (Belen en portugués), fue construido para proteger la boca del Río Tajo (Tejo en Portugal) entre los años 1514 y 1519. Es UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad. No era construido en el centro del río, como dice la leyenda, antes del seísmo de Lisboa en 1755. Siempre ha estado cerca de la orilla. 

3. Sintra

Like castles and palaces? Sintra is the place to go.  The city of 377,835 is an easy day trip from Lisbon, only 35-45 minutes away by train. It’s said to be the most crowded suburban train system in Europe! There are many castles, convents and palaces for visitors to explore, and the village itself is quaint. It’s straight out of a telenovela fairy tale. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. ¿Te gustan los castillos y palacios? Entonces, hay que ir a Sintra. La ciudad de 377.835 está muy cerca a Lisboa y fácil llegar en transporte público. Solo tarde unos 35-45 minutos en el tren, pero se dice que es el transporte más llena de personas en Europa. Hay bastantes castillos, conventos y palacios para explorar, y el pueblo en si mismo es pintoresco. Parece de una telenovela digo cuento de hadas, y es UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

4. Cascais

30 kilometres or 19 miles west of Lisbon lies Cascais, population 206,479. It’s a former resort for the Portuguse royal family and today attracts tourists due to its ocean views. The Boca do Inferno (a HellMouth! Call Buffy!), is a famous chasm in the cliffs near Cascais. A 30 kilómetros al oeste de Lisboa se encuentra Cascais, población 206.497. Era un casa de verano para la familia real portuguesa en el pasado. Hoy atrae turistas por sus vistas del océano. La Boca do Inferno es un abismo en los acantilados cerca de Cascais. 

5. Cabo de São Vicente

Located in the Algarve, Portugal’s southern most region, the Saint Vincent Cape is the southwestern point of Europe. The cape has a lighthouse, cliffs and spectacular ocean views. It was one of my first hikes, back in 2013. I caught the bus to the cape from Sagres (I caught a bus from Lagos to Sagres) and walked back to the village 3 kilometres away. We all start somewhere! Situado en el Algarve, la región más al sur de Portugal, el Cabo de San Vicente es el punto más suroeste de Europa. El cabo tiene un faro, acantilados y vistas espectaculares del océano. Era una de mis primeros intentos de senderismo, en 2013. Cogí el autobús al cabo desde Sagres (primero cogí un autobús de Lagos a Sagres) y volví al pueblo caminando. Era unos 3 kilómetros. Todos empezamos con rutas más fáciles.

6. Oporto

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, home of Port wine, the Río Douro, and J.K. Rowling lived there a few years and hung out at the Livraria Lello. Quaint, beautiful, charming, and every time I go it rains. Porto es la segunda ciudad de Portugal, un UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad, el hogar del vino de Oporto, el Río Duero (Douro en Portugal), y J.K. Rowling vivió allí durante unos años y siempre iba a la Livraria Lello, que le daba inspiración. Pintoresco, precioso, encantador…y cada vez que voy, llueve. 

7. Serra de Lousã

Located near Coímbra between Lisbon and Porto lies the beautiful Serra de Lousã and the Aldeias do Xisto. I’m a big fan of mountains and seeing the past, so it was a real treat hiking the beautiful mountains, seeing the castle and the slate villages.  Situado cerca de Coímbra entre Lisboa y Oporto, la hermosa Serra de Lousã y los Aldeias do Xisto es una sierra super bonita. Me encantan los montes y también poder ver la historia viva, entonces, era algo especial hacer una ruta por los montes preciosos, ver el castillo y los pueblos negros de chisto. 

Robinson Crusoe (1954).

Perhaps the most surreal thing about the 1954 film version of Robinson Crusoe directed by Spanish director Luis Buñuel is that Buñuel directed it. Quizás la cosa más surrealista de la versión de película de 1954 de Robinson Crusoe, dirigido por director español Luis Buñuel es que es una película elegido por Buñuel para dirigir. 

Most of us are familiar with the story of an English man stranded on a Pacific island after a shipwreck. During the span of 28 years, he is forced to live on the island and survive. He begins to go insane when his dog, Rex, dies of old age. (I go insane if I see films where a dog dies.) When cannibals arrive on the island, he rescues Friday who becomes company until the chance for escape arrives. La mayoría de nosotros conocemos la historia de un inglés que estaba en un naufragio y estaba atrapado en una isla del Pacífico durante 28 años. Durante este tiempo, tiene que aprender sobrevivir en la isla. Después de la muerte de su perro, Rex, empieza a volverse loco. (Me vuelvo loco yo si veo una película donde un perro se muere). Cuando llegan caníbales a la isla, Crusoe salva la vida de Friday, quien le hace compañía hasta que llegue la oportunidad de escapar. 

I’ll be honest and say that I don’t believe I’ve read the book. I may have read one of those “Great Illustrated Classics” versions as a child, but I was pretty unfamiliar with the actual story. The book was written by Daniel Defoe in 1719 and is widely considered the first English novel. As I haven’t read the book, I can only remark on the film, but the relationship between Crusoe and Friday comes off as purely master-slave. Looking at the time the novel was written and takes place…Voy a ser sincero y decir que creo que no me he leído el libro. Quizas leí uno de eses libros adaptados para niños cuando era un niño, pero no conocía bien la historia. La novela fue escritor por Daniel Defoe en 1719 y es considerado por muchos como la primera novela inglesa. Como no he leído el libro, solo puedo comentar la película, pero la relación entre Crusoe y Friday me parece más como la relación entre un amo y su esclavo. Mirando la época de la novel y cuando tiene lugar…

At the time, Buñuel was in exile from Spain (as Crusoe was in exile from England on the island) and undergoing McCarthyism.. It’s no surprise that Buñuel seized the opportunity to tell the story, and of course, there are some surreal dreams of Crusoe during his many years of solitude. In fact, the title character, played by Daniel O’Herlihy, ponders how the surviving cat can have a little of kittens if she is the only cat. Outside these moments, it is a pretty straightforward film and, from what I’ve read, a faithful adaptation of the book. Cuando hizo la película, Buñuel estaba en exilio de España (como Crusoe estaba en un exilio forzado de Inglaterra en la isla) y también estaba navigando “McCarthyism” (marcatismo, cuando estaban buscando comunistas en Hollywood). No es una sorpresa que Buñuel se aprovechó la oportunidad para hacer la película. Desde luego hay sueños surrealistas de Crusoe durante sus muchos años de soledad. De hecho, el protagonista (interpretado por Daniel O’Herlihy) pregunta como es posible la única gata sobreviviente puede dar luz a gatitos si es el único gato en la isla. Fuera de esos momentos, es una película directa y, de lo que he leído, una adaptación fiel al libro. 

It was Buñuel’s first colour film. The script was co-written with Luis Alcoriza and Hugo Butler. It was filmed on the west coast of Mexico in 1952, and Buñuel filmed two versions, one in Spanish and one in English. As the English was the version on YouTube, it was the version I saw. Jaime Hernández does a great job as Friday. Era la primera película en color de Buñuel. Escribió el guión con Luis Alcoriza y Hugo Butler. Era grabado en la costa oeste de México en 1952, y Buñuel hizo dos versiones, una en español y otra en inglés. Como la versión inglesa era la versión en YouTube, era la versión que vi. Jaime Hernández hace un buen trabajo como Friday. 

According to Wikipedia, “Buñuel saw the central theme of the story as that of a man who ages and almost loses his mind, only to find that companionship is his salvation.” This is pretty evident. Según Wikipedia, “Buñuel vio el tema central de la historia como la historia de un hombre envejeciendo y casí se vuelve loco, solo para descubrir que hacer compañía es su salvación.” Es muy obvio. 

Another fun fact is O’Herlihy said that Buñuel threw out the script after the first week and afterwards, it was based on conversations between the actor and director. Otro hecho es que O’Herlihy dijo que Buñuel tiró el guión después de la primera semana y era más basada en conversaciones entre el actor y director. 

The film, however, is too mainstream for a Buñuel. For some people, this is attractive. For me…it won’t be one of the most memorable films by this amazing director. Sin embargo, la película es demasiada convencional para Buñuel. A algunas personas les gusta esta tipa de película más. Para mi…no va a ser una de las películas más memorables hechas por este director genial.

Port en (O)porto.

Before anyone asks, I did sample port while in Porto. I liked it, although it wasn’t the best wine I’ve ever had. Antes de preguntarme, sí, probé vino de Oporto. Me gustó, aunque no era el mejor vino que he probado. 

I had been to Portugal’s second biggest city once before, in 2009, a two-day stop between Lisbon and Santiago de Compostela. I remember the city being beautiful, I remember it raining, and I remember going to the Osborne bodega to learn more about the making of Port wine. I’ve always wanted to go back to this magical city, and I was grateful for this opportunity. Había estado en la segunda ciudad de Portugal una vez antes, en 2009, una parada de dos días entre Lisboa y Santiago de Compostela. Recuerdo que la ciudad era bonita, recuerdo la lluvia, y recuerdo vistiando la bodega de Osborne para aprender más sobre la cosecha de vino. Siempre he querido volver esa ciudad encantadora, y me alegro haber tenido otra oportunidad.

Porto (It’s still known as Oporto in Spanish) has a population of 287,591 residents and a metropolitan population of 2,162,524. The Douro River runs through the heart of the city. The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Oporto tiene una población de 287.591 habitantes y una población metropolitana de 2.162.524. El Río Duero (conocido como Douro en Portugal) pasa por la ciudad. El casco antiguo ha sido un Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1996. 

I arrived about 11 and dropped my stuff off at the pensión, which was a good 2 kilometres from what I consider the city centre (the Ribeira). I found my way to the Ponte Don Luis I, admiring the Cathedral (Sé) along the way. I didn’t remember the Cathedral at all, so it was a good thing I went the way I did. Llegué sobre las 11 de la mañana y dejé el equipaje en la pensión, que era a 2 kilómetros de la Ribeira en el centro de la ciudad. Encontré el Ponte Don Luis I, y admiré la Sé (Catedral) por el camino. No recordaba bien la catedral, entonces, hice bien en tomar la ruta que tomé.

I crossed the bridge this time on the pavement near the tram tracks. I experienced a horrible sense of vertigo. I was dizzy the entire time I was up there, but I made myself do it as I remember lamenting the fact I didn’t cross the top part of the bridge the time before. Crucé el puente por arriba a lado de la vía de tranvía. Me daba bastante vértigo y estaba mareado todo el rato que pasaba por el puente. Seguí adelante porque siempre he lamentado el hecho que no cruce el puente por arriba durante mi primera visita a Oporto.

It was approaching lunch time, and I found a great place, O Bom Talher, that had a menú del día for only 8,50. Soup, main course, dessert (sobremesa), café, bread and wine included. It was the best meal of the trip. Ya era la hora de comer, y encontré un buen sitio para comer, O Bom Talher, que tenía un menú del día por solo 8,50 que incluyó sopa, segundo plato, postre (sobremesa), café, pan y vino. Era la mejor comida del viaje.

I continued exploring the city, and I went to the Livraria Lello, which inspired J,K. Rowling when she was working in Porto as an English teacher. (Thanks for inspiring me all the time, Ms. Rowling!). I didn’t pay the 4€ entrance fee or wait in the queue to pay for it, but I did admire it from the outside. Seguí explorando la ciudad, y fui a la Livraria Lello, que inspiró a J.K. Rowling cuando estaba trabajando en Oporto como una profesora de inglés. (Gracias por toda la inspiración que usted me da todos los días, Sra. Rowling!) No pagué los 4€ para entrar ni pensé en esperar en la cola para pagarlo, pero lo vi por afuera que era suficiente para mí.

I admired all the old churches. I did go back to the pensión to rest a bit, but I headed back to the centre to walk along the Douro and admire the bridges. I had a galao (large white coffee) while writing in my personal travel diary. También admiré todas las iglesias antiguas. Volví a la pensión para descansar, pero no descanse mucho. Pronto volví al centro para pasar por el Douro y ver los puentes. Tomé un galao (café con leche grande) mientras escribí en mi diario de viaje personal.

At dinner, I tried port and enjoyed it. En la cena, probé el vino de Oporto y me gustó.

I was left wanting more time to savour Porto, but I suppose I can always return. Me dejó con ganas de mas tiempo en Oporto, pero creo que siempre puedo volver algún día.

Porto has been named the Best European Destination in 2014 and 2017. It is definitely one of my faves. The airport has a Ryan Air hub, making it easy to get to from many European cities. Oporto era el Mejor Destino Europeo en 2014 y 2017. Es una de mis destinos preferidos, sí. El aeropuerto es un núcleo de Ryan Air, que facilita la visita de muchas ciudades europeas.

La muerte en este jardín (1956).

Death in the Garden. Although the library DVD case says “La muerte en el jardín”, IMDB has the 1956 Luis Buñuel film listed as “La muerte en este jardín”, Death in the Garden. Aunque el DVD de la biblioteca dice “La muerte en el jardín”, IMDB tiene la película de 1956 de director español nombrado como “La muerte en este jardín”. 

And what a death. Vaya muerte. 

The film is a French-Mexican co-production, and with a higher budget meant…COLOUR! I have never seen a Luis Buñuel film in colour before, and it was beautiful. The film is based on the novel with the same name by José-André Lacour. La película es una co-producción entre Francia y México, y con un presupuesto más grande…¡había COLOR! Nunca había visto una película de Luis Buñuel rodado en color antes, y era preciosa. La película es basada en la novela con el mismo nombre de José-André Lacour. 

I didn’t know what to expect from this film. I didn’t even read the back of the DVD case, going into it thinking it would be a murder mystery and one of his Mexican “I need money” films. No sabía de que iba la película. Ni leí que dijo sobre la película en la caja del DVD. Pensaba que iba a ser un misterio de un asesino y era una de sus películas mexicanas que “Necesito ganar dinero rápido.”

Instead, we get a surrealist metaphor for Franco’s Spain. The film was in French, but having got it from the València library, I was treated to a dubbed in Spain Spanish soundtrack. En lugar de eso, era una metáfora surrealista de la España de Franco. La película estaba en francés, pero como lo había llevado de la biblioteca de Valencia, estaba doblado en castellano peninsular. 

In an imaginary South American country located somewhere near Brazil, a group of misfits must flee the oppressive, repressive regime that has been destroying the lives of the mining town.  These misfits include a priest, because this is Buñuel, (Michel Piccoli is Father Lizardi), a hooker, Djin, (is this Almodóvar? Simone Signoret shines as as Djin), Shark, an adventurer played by Georges Marchal, a diamond miner (Charles Vanel) and his deaf daughter, (Michèle Girardon). Now they have to find their way out of the jungle (aka “garden”) to save their lives while in exile. En un país imaginario de América del sur situado cerca de Brasil, un grupo de inadaptados tienen que huir de un régimen opresivo y represivo que está destrozando las vidas de los habitantes de un pueblo que vive de sus minas. Incluye un sacerdote, porque es una película de Buñuel (Michel Piccoli es Padre Lizardi), una prostituta, Djin (¿es una película de Almodóvar? The metaphors are plenty, and the film becomes more and more surreal as it progresses toward the ending. It serves as a psychological mirror at the society Franco created under his dictatorship. Hay muchas metáforas, y la película se hace más y más surrealista hasta el final. This was a welcome departure from his Mexican era for me and more of what I think of when I hear the name “Luis Buñuel.” Para mi, era una divergencia de su época mexicana y más de lo que pienso cuando escucho el nombre “Luis Buñuel”.

For many years, Penyagolosa was thought to be the highest mountain in the Comunitat Valenciana. Turns out, it’s the second highest mountain after the Alto de Barracas in Ademus, which is 1839 metres (6,033 feet) compared to Penyagolosa’s 1813 metres (5948 feet). Nevertheless, Penyagolosa is the most emblematic mountain of Valencia. Durante muchos años, Penyagolosa era considerado el monte más alto de la Comunitat Valenciana. Ahora sabemos que es el monte segundo más alto después del Alto de Barracas en Ademuz, que tiene 1839 metros de altura. Penyagolosa solo tiene 1813 metros. Sin embargo, Penyagolosa es el monte más emblemático de Valencia.

The second weekend of May, I had my opportunity to explore this beautiful mountain, located 2 hours from Valencia capital in the province of Castellón. It was another hiking trip with Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports group of Valencia. El segundo fin de semana de mayo, tenía una oportunidad para explorar este monte precioso. Está a unas 2 horas en coche de Valencia capital en la provincia de Castellón. Era otra excursión con Samarucs, el grupo deportivo LGBT+ en Valencia.

We left Friday afternoon, and everyone had arrived by 7:30. We stayed at the Hospedería Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, a sanctuary located 1200 metres above sea level in the heart of Penyagolosa. Most of the hiking routes begin at this famous sanctuary which was built sometime after the conquests of Jaume I (Jaime 1) of Aragón. It’s always interesting to stay in a place with such history. Salimos miércoles por la tarde, y a las 19.30, todos habíamos llegado. Nos alojamos en la Hospedería Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, un santuario ubicado a 1200 metros sobre el mar. La mayoría de las rutas empiezan en este santuario famoso que era construido después de las conquistas de Jaume I (Jaime 1) de Aragón.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, we headed to the Centre of Interpretation, which explained the history of the mountain villages like Vistabella and Xodos and how they used to live. There was also a 10-minute film about the mountain and its flora and fauna. Sábado por la mañana, después de desayunar, fuimos al Centro de Interpretación, donde nos explicó la historia de los pueblos del monte como Vistabella y Xodos y como vivían en el pasado. También había una película corta de 10 minutos sobre el monte y su flora y fauna.

After the half-hour visit, we left knowing more about the mountain we were about to explore. Saturday’s route was La Ruta de Batalla, about 14 kilometres through forest trails and mountain passes. Everything was beautiful. We stopped for a break at the Batalla lookout, admiring the nearby mountain views. Castellón is one of the most mountainous regions of Spain. In the distance we could see rain clouds. Después de la visita de media hora, salimos sabiendo más sobre el monte que ibamos a explorar. La ruta de sábado era la Ruta de Batalla, una ruta de unos 14 kilómetros que pasa por mucho bosque y por mucha montaña. Todo era precioso. Paramos por un descanso en el mirador de Batalla, admirando las vistas de los montes cercanos. Me han explicado que Castellón es uno de las provincias más montañosas de España. En la distancia podemos ver nubes de lluvia.

We stopped to eat near an abandoned masía (farmhouse), which offered amazing views of Penyagolosa’s peak. Paramos para comer a lado de una masía abandonada. Había vistas increíbles del pico de Penyagolosa.

After finishing the hike around 16:15, we stretched and had free time until dinner. Some people took a siesta, some played an interesting game of Parchesí (a board game I will have to try sometime) or going to the nearby villages of Vistabella and Xodos. Después de terminar la ruta sobre las 16.15, estiramos y tuvimos tiempo libre hasta la cena. Algunos se echaban una siesta, algunos jugamos un partido interesante de Parchesí (un juego de mesa que me gustaría probar jugar) y algunos iban a los pueblos cercanos de Vistabella y Xodos.

The weekend happened to correspond with Eurovision, that horribly cheesy and amazing at the same time music festival. I try to avoid it because…well…but I was drawn in a little at just how bad Spain’s performance was. We came in dead last this year. Spain is different! El fin de semana coincidió con Eurovisión, la competición de música que es a la misma vez cutre y genial. Suelo evitarlo porque…bueno…pero este año me enganchó la actuación de España porque era horrible. España era la última este año. Spain is different. 

Sunday’s route was straight up the mountain. We awoke and had breakfast, and we left Sant Joan to climb the mountain. The route wasn’t too hard, especially for those of us who have already climbed Puig Campana. It went through some beautiful mountain landscapes, which, if there had been water in the dry river bed, would have been even more beautiful. It took about two hours to climb from the Sanctuary, which included a 10 minute break. La ruta de domingo era para subir el monte. Nos despertamos y desayunamos, y salimos Sant Joan para subir el pico. La ruta no era muy difícil, especialmente para los que subimos el Puig Campana. Pasaba por paisajes bonitos del monte. Si hubiera agua en el cauce, estaría aún más hermosa. Tardamos sobre dos horas para subir desde el santuario, y eso era con un descanso de unos 10 minutos.

Making it to the top gives a feeling of accomplishment, and the views were amazing. The company was even better. We took a lot of photos and felt a sense of pride, gay and otherwise. Llegar al cima nos daba un sentimiento de habar logrado algo. Las vistas eran espectaculares. La compañía era aún mejor. Hicimos bastantes fotos y nos sentimos orgullo…gay y también de llegar a la cima.

The trip back down went quicker, and we ate at the picnic tables outside the sanctuary before taking one last carajillo, one of the most popular drinks of the weekend. In the province of Castellón, they make carajillos by burning rum or brandy for a few minutes before adding coffee. I had to try one because fire is fun. Nos bajamos más rápido que subimos, y comemos en las mesas de picnic fuera del santuario antes de tomarnos el último carajillo, uno de las bebidas más populares del fin de semana. En la provincia de Castellón, hacen carajillos. Se quema ron o coñac durante unos minutos antes de añadir café. Tenía que probarlo porque el fuego es divertido.

I thought about various Camino blogs and their stories of the albergues, so here goes my commentary on the hospedería, which is my own opinion and not necessarily the opinion of anyone else who went. I lucked out with ensuite bathroom, but most people had to share bathrooms and showers. The heating was decent inside the room but a bit chilly in the halls. Friday night’s dinner wasn’t too great, but the dinner on Saturday was much better. The beds were adequate, but you could hear people snoring in other rooms. Some rooms had bunk beds. No reports of bed bugs. The staff was excellent. Me acordaba de varios blogs sobre el Camino de Santiago y sus historias de los albergues. Entonces, voy a hacer algo de comentario (que es mi opinión y no necesariamente la opinión de todos). Tenía suerte para tener una habitación con un baño dentro, pero la mayoría de la gente que se aloja tiene que compartir baños y duchas. La calefacción estaba buena dentro de la habitación (demasiada para algunas), pero hacía frío en los pasillos. La cena de viernes no me gustaba mucho a mí, pero la cena de sábado era mucho mejor. Las camas eran adecuadas, pero se puede escuchar alguna gente roncar desde otras habitaciones. Algunos habitaciones tenían literas. No había chinches. El personal de la hospedería era muy buena gente, de categoría.

The weekend was a fantastic experience for everyone who went. Every time Samarucs puts together a hiking excursion, it’s a fantastic experience. A special thanks goes out to the guide, the coordinators and everyone who went. El fin de semana era una experiencia fantástica (¡DE CATEGORÍA!para todos que fuimos. Cada vez que Samarucs monta una excursión de senderismo, es una experiencia fantástica. Muchas gracias al guía, los coordinadores y todos que fuimos.

Serra do Lousã, Aldeias do Xisto

One of the reasons I decided on visiting Coímbra for two days was I read about the nearby Serra do Lousã. The village of Lousã is about 25 kilometres from Coímbra (15 miles), but the bus takes about an hour to reach the village due to the stops and backroads. Una de las razones que decidí visitar Coímbra durante dos días en lugar de un día era porque leí sobre la cercana Serra do Lousã. El pueblo de Lousã está a unos 25 kilómetros de Coímbra, pero el autobus tarda sobre una hora para llegar al pueblo dado a las paradas y las carreteras.

The population of Lousã is 17,604. There are a few bars and shops and a hotel, and it’s a tranquil place. After having another Portuguese pastry and meia com leite, I went walking toward the Castelo do Lousã, which was about 2 kilometres at a guess. La población de Lousã es 17.604. Hay unos bares y tiendas y un hotel, y es un sitio tranquilo. Después de tomar otro pastel portugués y meia com leite, fui caminando hacía el Castelo do Lousã. Estimo que estaba a unos 2 kilómetros.

I was amazed by the castle. It was pretty well conserved on the outside, and it’s situated in the mountains and trees. It dates back to the 11th century and was a summer home of Queen Mafalda. Me impresionó mucho el castillo. Era muy bien conservado por fuera y está situado en los montes y árboles. Fue construido en el Siglo XI y era una casa de verano de la Reina Mafalda.

After admiring the castle, I looked at the hiking map and saw there was a circular route that was about 6 kilometres and took about 3 hours. I don’t know if I did the right route or not, as I took about two hours and only saw two of the Schist Villages. Después de admirar el castillo, miré el mapa de senderismo y vi que había una ruta circular que era unos 6 kilómetros y tardaría unas 3 horas. No sé si hice la ruta correcta o no, como solo tardé dos horas y solo vi dos de las aldeas de esquisto.

Aldeias do Xisto translates as Schist Villages. It might be my northern Ohio English, but I would translate it as “Slate villages”. They’re similar to the Pueblos Negros de Guadalajara (Spain). Aldeas do Xisto significa “aldeas de esquisto” en castellano. Creo que “aldeas de pizarra” sería una mejor traducción. Son parecidos a los Pueblos Negros de Guadalajara en España.

The route was filled with spectacular views of the Serra de Lousã. I was impressed. There were a few ermitas (hermitages) along the way. About 40 minutes later of hiking near a stream and up the mountain, I found myself in the first village, Talasnal. I explored it a bit. The Portuguese Wikipedia page says it has a population of 10. It was small. La ruta tenía muchas vistas espectaculares de la Serra de Lousã. Me impresionó. Había unas ermitas por el camino. Después unos 40 minutos de caminando por un arroyo y subiendo el monte, me encontré en el primer pueblo, Talasnal. Lo exploré. La página portuguesa dice que tiene una población de 10 personas. Era pequeño.

The tourist information directed me toward Route #2, which I believe was still the circular, which lead me to another village, Casal Nova. It was even smaller. It said 40 minutes, but I only took 20 minutes. I explored it a bit, then went back to Lousã. The path down the mountain was a bit steep but fun. La información de turismo me dirigió hacía la Ruta #2, que creo que era la circular, que me llevó a otro pueblo, Casal Nova, que era aún más pequeño. Dijo que era unos 40 minutos, pero solo tardé 20 minutos en llegar. Lo exploré un rato, y volví a Lousã. La bajada tenía bastante pendiente pero era divertida.

It was definitely the highlight of an incredible third trip to Portugal. Era una de las partes más memorables de mi tercer viaje increíble a Portugal.

El río y la muerte (1954)

Rivers and death. Small towns versus cities. Family versus family. Mix these ingredients, and you have El río y la muerte (“The River and Death”), the 1954 Mexican film from Spanish director Luis Buñuel, the closest he came to making a Western film. Un río y la muerte. Pueblos contra ciudades. Familia contra familia. Mezcla estos ingredientes y tienes El río y la muerte, la película mexicano el director español Luis Buñuel hizo en 1954. Era la película más cercana a una película del oeste que hizo. 

The Anguianos and the Menchacas have been feuding for years, as if they were Montagues and Capulets, or Joan and Bette, or Trump and the press. The town has been ravaged by this feud spanning generations, and now only one son from each family remains alive. Gerardo Anguiano (Joaquín Cordero) is a doctor in the city who is being urged by his mother to return to the town to fight the son of the Menchacas, Romulo (Jaime Fernández). What happens when Gerardo finally comes home to settle the score? Los Anguiano y los Menchaca llevan años peleando, como si fueran los Montague y los Capulet, o Joan Crawford y Bette Davis, o Trump y la prensa. Esta pelea ha destrozado el pueblo que ha durando durante muchas generaciones. Ahora, solo un hijo de cada familia vive. Gerardo Anguiano (Joaquín Cordero) es un médico en la ciudad. Su madre insiste que Gerardo vuelve al pueblo para luchar el hijo de los Menchaca, Romulo (Jaime Fernández). ¿Que pasará cuando por fin Gerardo vuelve a casa para resolver la pelea para siempre? 

Buñuel, as you can expect, dismissed the film as a failure. I’m not really a fan of the western genre, but the film is decent as Western’s goes. It shows the conflict between city and village and the importance of honour in Mexican culture. Buñuel, como ya puedes imaginar, dijo que la película era un fracaso. No soy un fan del género de oeste, pero la película no está mal por ser una del oeste. Muestra el conflicto entre la ciudad y pueblo y la importancia del honor en la cultura mexicana. 

It was another collaboration with screenwriter Luis Alcoriza. It isn’t anything spectacular, nor does it have the fame of Buñuel’s later works. However, he definitely has nothing to be ashamed of. Writers, directors and artists are always our own worst critics. Era otra colaboración con guionista Luis Alcoriza. No es nada espectacular, no tiene la fama de las películas del final de la carrera de Buñuel. Sin embargo, no tiene nada de avergonzarse. Escritores, directores y artistas en general siempre son nuestros peor críticos.

Camino de Requena Etapa 3: Chiva-Buñol

It was high time I started preparing for the Camino del Norte this summer. Ya tocaba volver a preparar para el Camino del Norte este verano. 

The Camino de Requena that takes peregrinos from Valencia to the Camino de la Lana passes through some beautiful landscapes and interesting towns. I’m not sure how much more of it I will do to be honest, but I definitely enjoyed a short etapa to get me back into the swing of things. El Camino de Requena que lleva peregrinos desde València al Camino de la Lana pasa por paisajes bonitos y pueblos interesantes. No sé cuanto más de este Camino voy a hacer para ser sincero, pero disfruté de una etapa corta para volver a la “rutina” del Camino. 

I caught a “late” train around 9:30 and found myself in Chiva, the small town of 13,494 people, where I had left the Camino in February. After a quick second breakfast of café con leche and tostada con tomate, I found my way back to the Camino, only taking one wrong turn to get out of town. I am horrible with Google Maps. Cogí un tren sobre las 9.30 (algo “tarde” para hacer una ruta) y me encontré en Chiva, un pueblo de 13.494 personas, donde dejé el Camino en febrero. Después de un segundo desayuno de café con leche y tostada con tomate, encontré el Camino, y solo me perdí una vez para encontrar la salida del pueblo. Soy un desastre con el app de Google Maps.

It was only 11 kilometres to Bunyol (Valencian), home of the Tomatina. Buñol (Spanish) has nearly 10,000 residents when people aren’t throwing tomatoes at each other. The 11 kilometres goes through more agriculture areas with beautiful mountains in the distance. It was either paved or dirt road walking the entire way. A few locals were walking, but I have yet to see any peregrino on either Camino route. Solo había 14 kilómetros entre Bunyol (valenciano) y Chiva. Buñol es el hogar de la fiesta famosa La Tomatina y tiene casí 10.000 habitantes cuando la gente no están tirándose tomates. Los 11 kilómetros pasan por zonas de agricultura con montes bonitos en la distancia. O era carretera o un sendero de tierra todo el camino. Había unas personas de la zona caminando, pero todavía no he visto ningún peregrino en este Camino (y tampoco vi peregrinos por el Camino de Levante). 

There isn’t a lot more to say. It was a peaceful, ZEN like day (which I really needed after some major setbacks). No hay mucho más decir. Era un día de paz y con mucho ZEN, que me hacía falta después de unas complicaciones grandes de la vida.)

I arrived to the train station in Buñol just in time to catch the 12:55 train, so it was a really short day, only two hours. It leaves me in a good position to take it back up whenever I want if I decide to. Llegué a la estación de tren de Buñol para coger el tren a las 12:55, entonces, fui un día muy corto, solo dos horas. Me deja en una buena posición para volver al Camino cuando quiera si elegir volver a ese camino.

Coímbra, located on the River Mondego about halfway between Lisbon and Porto, is the fourth largest city in Portugal with a population of 143,396 inhabitants. It was once the Portuguese capital and it is home to the oldest academic institution in Portugal, the Universidade de Coímbra, which began in 1290. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Coímbra, situado en el Río Mondego entre Lisboa y Oporto, es la cuarta ciudad más grande de Portugal con una población de 143.396 habitantes. Erase una vez la capital de Portugal y es el hogar de la institución académica más antigua de Portugal, la Universidade de Coímbra, que empezó en 1290. Ha sido UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2013.

I arrived on Easter Sunday about 18.00, and my pensión was about ten minutes walking from the bus station. I dropped my bags off and went off to meander the city streets. I loved the Praça 8 de maio. I climbed up the hill slowly but surely to explore the old town and the university, which was every bit as magnificent as I had been told. It was a bit quiet, being Easter Weekend. I watched the sunset over the Mondrego and had a decent dinner. Llegué el domingo de Pascua sobre las 18.00, y mi pensión estaba ubicado a 10 minutos caminando de la estación de autobuses. Dejé el equipaje y fui a deambular las calles. Me encantó la Praça 8 de maio. Subí la colina poco a poco para explorar el casco viejo y la universidad, que era tan magnificente como me habían dicho. Era un poco callado, como era el fin de semana de Pascua. Vi la puesta del sol sobre el Mondrego y cené bien por la Praça 8 de maio.

After my trip to the Serra de Lousã Monday morning, Monday afternoon was spent exploring the city even more. I have to admit I went to the wrong bus stop for the bus to Lousã. Portuguese cities love to make their buses complicated, I discovered on this trip! Después de mi viaje a la Serra de Lousã lunes por la mañana, exploré las calles de Coímbra aún más lunes por la tarde. Tengo que admitir que fui a la parada de autobús incorrecta para coger el autobús a Lousã. A las ciudades portugueses les encanta hacer los autobuses complicados. ¡Descubrí eso este viaje!

I crossed the Mondrego to write in my personal journal and people watch before exploring the upper town even more. My professor was right when he said the Portuguese could burn off those tasty pastries while walking through Coímbra! Crucé el Mondrego para escribir en mi diario de viaje personal y ver el mundo pasear antes de explorar el casco antiguo aún más. ¡Mi profesor tenía razón cuando me dijo que los portugueses siempre se queman las calorías de los pasteles ricos mientras paseaban por Coímbra!

I was really glad to discover this city. It’s slowly being discovered by tourism, but what place isn’t these days? Me alegro haber descubierto esa ciudad. Poco a poco el turismo está descubriéndolo también, pero el turismo está encontrando a todos los sitios hoy en día.

There are trains to both Lisbon and Porto, but they will take you to Coímbra B, where you will need to catch a train to Coímbra city centre. The bus takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Lisbon (and sometimes stops in Fátima) and takes about an hour and a half to Porto. Hay trenes de Lisboa y Oporto, pero van a la estaciónd e Coímbra B, donde tienes que coger otro tren hasta el centro de Coímbra. El autobús tarda sobre 2 horas y 20 minutos desde Lisboa (y a veces para en Fátima) y tarda sobre una hora y media a Oporto.
