I am so glad I made the decision to skip ahead in my Buñuel viewing. El Ángel Exterminador (The Exterminating Angel) from the Spanish director Luis Buñuel is part of the reason why I wanted to start this project, and a friend told me the new film from Álex de la Iglesias (I will get to it soon) El Bar was heavily influenced by the 1962 film. The New York Times considers it one of the 1000 best films in history. Why? Me alegro hice la decisión adelantarme un poco en El Proyecto de Buñuel. El Ángel Exterminador del director español Luis Buñuel es una razón importante que quería ver sus películas. Un colega me dijo la nueva de Álex de la Iglesias (ya lo veré prónto) El Bar tiene bastante influencia de este película de 1962. El periódico estadounidense The New York Times se considera El Ángel Exterminador una de las 1000 mejores películas de historia. ¿Por qué?

The plot is not too complicated, but it is surreal. I mean, it is Luis Buñuel. El argumento no es muy complicado, pero es surrealista. Quiero decir, es Luis Buñuel. 

A group of rich people gather for a party. The servants (outside the butler, did he do it?) leave, but instead of leaving, the party goers go to sleep in the living room. The next morning, they are unable to leave. They soon finish the party food and drinks and start to bicker, fight and wonder what is going on. The sheep and a bear that were invited soon join them. Un grupo de ricos van a una feista. Sus sirvientes (menos el mayordomo. ¿Lo hiciste?) se van, pero en lugar de irse también, la gente de la fiesta se duerman en la sala de estar. La mañana siguiente, nadie puede salir. Muy pronto terminan de comer toda la comida de la fiesta y empiezan a discutir. Nadie sabe que está pasando. Las ovejas y el oso que estaban invitados unen la diversión. 

Spoilers for the end. Later, a similar event happens at a church, because it is Luis Buñuel, and although the plot is not too complicated, it is surreal. Riots start in the streets, shots are heard, and sheep arrive in single file to attend mass. The film ends. SPOILERS para el final. Después, un evento parecido ocurre en una iglesia, como es Luis Buñuel, y aunque el argumento no es muy complicado, es surrealista. Hay disturbios en la calle, se escucha disparos, y las ovejas llegan, en fila, para escuchar misa. La película ya ha acabado. 

Buñuel never explicitly stated what all the metaphors meant. Film critic Roger Ebert once said he felt that /Buñuel nunca dijo que significa todas las metáforas. El crítico estadounidense Roger Ebert ha dicho que cree que 

“the dinner guests represent the ruling class in Franco’s Spain. Having set a banquet table for themselves by defeating the workers in the Spanish Civil War, they sit down for a feast, only to find it never ends. They’re trapped in their own bourgeois cul-de-sac. Increasingly resentful at being shut off from the world outside, they grow mean and restless; their worst tendencies are revealed.” (Los invitados representan la clase de poder en la España de Franco. Como hay una mesa de banquete para ellos mismos después de derrotar los trabajadores en la Guerra Civil Española, se sientan para una comilona solo para descubrir que nunca acaba. Están atrapados en su propio cul-de-sac (calle sin salida) burgués. Cada vez más amargados por ser cortados del mundo afuera, empiezan a ser crueles e inquietos, sus peores tendencias son reveladas. 

It is Luis Buñuel, and although the plot was not too complicated to understand, it is surreal and the metaphors are fun to figure out. One of the recurring motifs was repetition. Buñuel said there are over 20 repetitions in the film. IMDB counted. It’s 27. Es Luis Buñuel, y aunque no es complicado entender el argumento, es surrealista y es divertido pensar en los metáforas. Although Buñuel had complete creative control, he felt the film was a failure, which I mean, he says about every film I’m finding. He wanted to include cannabilism. The original title was “The Outcasts of Providence Street”, but he saw the name “El Ángel Exterminador” in a play written by a friend. Since the friend said the name came from the Book of Revelation, Buñuel went with it. Aunque Buñuel tenía control creativo, se sentió que el film era un fracaso. Bueno. Buñuel lo ha dicho de todas sus películas. Buñuel quiso tener canabalismo en la película. El título original era Los Náufragos de la Calle Providencia. Cuando vi el nombre “El Angel Exterminador” en una obra de teatro escrita por su amigo, quería comprar los derechos, pero su amigo le dijo que el nombre venía del Libro de Revelación en la Biblia. Buñuel usó ese nombre. 

Silvia Pinal and Enrique Rambal lead a top-notch cast. Silvia Pinal y Enrique Rambal son unos de los actores en un reparto genial. 

While the plot itself is simple, the hidden meanings make viewers think, and the film is surreal. It is Luis Buñuel. Aunque el argumento es simple, los significados escondidos hacen los espectadores pensar, y la película es surrealista. 

It is by far one of his best. It’s surreal, full of metaphors and very much a film by Luis Buñuel. Es una de las mejores de un genio. Es surrealista, lleno de metáforas, y muy pero muy de Luis Buñuel.
