El Bruto (The Brute) is a 1953 disappointment from Spanish director Luis Buñuel filmed during his Mexican era. El Bruto es una película decepcionante de director español Luis Buñuel que rodeó en 1953 durante su época mexicana.

Andrés Cabrera (Andrés Soler) wants to evict all the residents of an apartment complex he owns so he can demolish it and sell the land. He hires Pedro El Bruto (Pedro Armendáriz) to intimidate the residents. He later accidentally kills someone, falls in love with the daughter, which upsets his wife, who is obsessed with him. Andrés Cabrera (Andrés Soler) quiere echar de un bloque de pisos todos los que viene allí porque quiere derribarlo y vender la tierra donde se encuentra. Contrata a Pedro El Bruto (Pedro Armendáriz) para intimidar los residentes. Después, en un accidente, mata a alguien, se enamora de la hija de la persona que mató, que pone enfadada a su mujer y quien está obsesionado de él.

Yep. Bueno.

Despite having all the keys to an exciting film (obsession, adultery, murder), the movie is soporific. I watched it on the bus ride from Zaragoza to Jaca, and I was much more entertained by the beautiful passage than I was the film. (To be fair, have you seen Huesca province?) A pesar de tener todas partes que necesita ser una película emocionante (obsesión, infidelidad, un asesino), la película es floja. Para ser sincero, la vi en el viaje de autobús desde Zaragoza a Jaca, y me entrenó más el paisaje bonito que la pelí. Para ser justo, ¿has visto la provincia de Huesca?)

I think I need a break from Buñuel’s Mexican period and need to skip ahead to his later works and come back and fill in the gaps. The film was good from a technical standpoint, but it failed to grab my interest. Creo que me hace falta un descanso de la época mexicana de Buñuel y debería adelantarme a las películas que hizo más tarde en su carrera. Después, puedo volver para verlas que me faltan. La película estaba bien hecha, pero no me grabó la atención.

I feel I can now officially say I am a valenciano after hiking to the top of Puig Campana, the second highest mountain in the province of Alicante (after Aitana). The mountain is one of the most emblematic of the Comunitat Valenciana. Ahora, creo que ya puedo decir que soy valenciano verdadero después de subir el Puig Campana, el monte segundo más alto de la provincia de Alicante. (Aitana es el monte más alto). Puig Campana es uno de los montes más emblemático de la Comunitat Valenciana.

The mountain, whose name is Valenciano-Catalán for “Bell Hill” (and it is much more than a hill, vamos) is 1410 metres (4,625 feet) which makes it the third highest mountain I’ve hiked after Jamboba in La Rioja and Gorbea in Euskadi. El monte, cuyo nombre significa “Colina de Campana” en valenciano-català (y vamos, es mucho más que una colina) tiene 1410 metros de altura. Es el tercer monte más alto que he subido después de Jamboda en La Rioja y Gorbea en Euskadi.

The mountain has a lot of legends, including one about a fight at the summit between Charlemagne’s commander La Brèche de Roland and the Moorish army captain. Roland was ready to kill his opponent and missed, which caused a part of the mountain to fly into the sea. This part of the mountain is Benidorm Island. French Professor B. Granier has proven this to be false. Meanie. Another version says Roland’s lover Alda was to die at sunset, so he cut out part of the mountain to make the sun stay a few minutes longer. Hay muchos leyendas sobre el monte, incluso una sobre una lucha en la cima entre el comandante de Carlomango La Brèche de Roldán y el capitán del ejercito moro. Roldán estaba a punto de matar a su adversario pero le perdió, que causó una parte del monte caerse al mar. La parte del monte que se cayó ahora es la Isla de Benidorm. El profesor frances B. Para tenerla unos momentos más, Roldán se cortó una parte del monte para que el sol se viera más tiempo.

The hike is not an easy one. I went with Samarucs, a gay sports club in Valencia, and we left Torres de Quart around 8:30. The time change was the day before, and I think most everyone was extra tired. It did give us an extra hour of light to find our way back to the cars at the end of the day. La ruta no es una ruta fácil. Fui con Samarucs, un club deportivo gay en Valencia, y salimos de Torres de Quart sobre las 8.30. El cambio de hora era el día anterior, y creo que todos estábamos más cansado que normal. Lo bueno es que nos daba una hora extra de sol para volver a los coches al final del día.

It’s about an hour and a half from Valencia cap i casal, as they refer to Valencia city in Valencian. We began the ascent around 10:30, and while not an easy one, it is a beautiful one. El viaje de Valencia tarda sobre una hora y media desde Valencia cap i casal (como se refiere a Valencia en valenciano). Empezamos la ruta sobre las 10.30, y aunque no sea la ruta más fácil, es una ruta súper bonita.

The path we took from the parking near Finestrat, (population 6137) snaked up and around the mountain like a snail. The views were, as always, spectacular. The paths were narrow. The mountain Aitana was nearby. The mountains are part of the Prébetico range. El sendero que tomamos desde el parking cerca de Finestrat (población 6137) giró sobre el monte como un caracol. Las vistas, como siempre, eran espectaculares. Los senderos eran estrechos. Siempre se puede ver el monte cercano Aitana. Los montes forman parte del Sistema Prébetico.

We took a break in a clearing, el Coll Pouet. In true introvert fashion, I found a beautiful German Shepherd mix to make friends with. I am a huge dog person and look forward to that day I have a stable job in a coastal village near Valencia or Barcelona and can have two goldens and a German Shepherd. Descansamos en un collado, el Coll Pouet, bajó unos arboles. Como el introvertido que soy, encontré una pastor alemán y hice buenas migas con ella. Me encantan los perros y me da mucha ilusión pensar en el día que ya tenga trabajo fijo en un pueblo de la costa cerca de Valencia o Barcelona y pueda tener dos golden retrievers y un German Shepherd.

We still had 2.1 kilometres (1.3 miles) to the top. Here is where things got interesting. Due to the loose stones that cover the path, gravity, and the narrowness of the path (that is hard to see to begin with), getting to the top can be a bit risky. Every time the stones slipped beneath me, I thought I was going to plummit to my death. I don’t think it was THAT dangerous, but it COULD be if you don’t proceed with a lot of caution. Going down was even more nervewrecking. Todavía nos quedaban 2,1 kilómetros hasta la cima. Era intersante para subir. Dado a las piedras sueltas que cubren el sendero, la gravidad y el sendero estrecho (que apenas se puede ver), subir hasta la cima es un poco arriesgado. Cada vez las piedras deslizaron, pensaba que iba a caerme a la muerte. No creo que sea tan peligroso, pero PODRÍA ser si no andas con mucha precaución. Bajar el monte me puso aún más nervioso.

The views became even more impressive the higher we got. We eventually arrived at the summit and admired the views while we ate lunch. Cuanto más alto subimos, cuanto más impresionante eran las vistas. Por fin llegamos a la cima y admiramos las vistas mientras comemos.

What goes up must come down, and after an hour or so of eating and resting, it was time to head back. There were times I wanted to just give up because of how scared of falling I was. I slipped a few times but did not fall. Lo que sube hay que bajar. Después de una hora de descanso y comer, ya tocaba la vuelta. A veces quería rendirme y sentarme en el suelo dado al miedo de caerme que tenía. Me resbalé algunas veces, pero no me caí.

The original plan was go continue from Coll Pouet around the other side of the mountain, but someone in the group had a really bad leg cramp, and going back the way we came was the easier option so not to cause potential further damage. The way back had different views, and the lowering sun over the mountains made them even more beautiful on the way back. El plan era seguir desde Coll Pouet por el otro lado del monte, pero alguien tenía un calambre muy doloroso y era más fácil volver por el mismo camino para evitar una lesión grave. Sin embargo, la vuelta tenía vistas distintas, como el sol ya estaba bajándose. Los montes eran aún más preciosos con el atardecer.

It was nearly 19:00 by the time we arrived the car park/parking lot. We stretched and had something to drink at the nearby bar which was technically closed. Casí era las 19.00 cuando llegamos al parking. Hicimos estiramientos y nos tomamos algo en el bar a lado del parking, que técnicamente estaba cerrado.

It was a good day, and I’m definitely glad to have found Samarucs. Each excursion has taken me to incredible places I might not have discovered on my own, and although yes, es mejor estar sólo que en mal acompañado…it’s even better to be in great company. Era un día genial, y me alegro haber encontrado Samarucs. Cada excursión me ha llevado a sitios increíbles que nunca habría descubierto. Aunque sí, es mejor estar solo que mal acompañado,¡s aún mejor estar en buena compañía!

I just wonder what the hike would have been like had Roland not missed his opponent with the supposed fatal blow…aunque quiero saber como la ruta habría sido si Rolando no hubiera perdido a su adversario con este supuesto golpe fatal…

Jaca, Canfranc y Rapitán

Jaca is not the biggest city in the province of Huesca, as it only has 13, 396 residents, but it is probably the most famous. I had been wanting to travel there for a long time, but for whatever reasons, the province of Huesca has eluded me until now. Jaca no es la ciudad más grande de la provincia de Huesca, como solo tiene 13.396 habitantes, pero creo que es la más famosa. Llevo mucho tiempo queriendo ir allí, pero hasta ahora, no he tenido la oportunidad ir a la provincia de Huesca.

It’s popular with the Basques due to skiing, and the Basque presence is definitely noted in this Aragonese town. La ciudad es popular con los vascos dado a su proximidad a estaciones de esquí, y se nota mucho la presencia vasca en este pueblo aragonés.

The bus ride from Zaragoza took about 2.5 hours, and while it passed through some spectacular scenery, I was more than anxious to get off the bus. I dropped my stuff off at the AirBNB, which was in an old pensión, I believe, and went off to explore the town. El viaje de autobús de Zaragoza tardó sobre 2,5 horas, y aunque pasaba por paisaje espectacular, estaba ansioso llegar a mi destino. Dejé mis cosas en el AirBNB, que estaba en una pensión antigua, creo, y fui a explorar el pueblo.

The most famous monument of the former capital of Aragón is the Ciudadela (Citadel), which is pretty impressive. It’s also known as the Castillo of San Pedro (St. Peter’s Castle). It’s in the centre of town and at sunset, many people were walking or resting on the green on a beautiful mid-March afternoon. El monumento más famoso de la ex-capital de Aragón es la Ciudadela, que es impresionante. También es conocido como el Castillo de San Pedro. Está en el centro del pueblo y al atardecer, había mucha gente paseando y descansando en el césped en una tarde bonita de marzo.

The Cathedral is also pretty nice and is from the 11th Century. The city of Jaca is close enough to the Pyrenees for skiers and snowboarders to stay the night, so although it’s small, it’s always full of life. La Catedral (del Siglo XI) también es bonita. Jaca está cerca a los Pirineos y muchos esquiadores y aficionados del snowboard hacen noche allí. Aunque es una ciudad pequeña, siempre hay ambiente.

Friday morning, I was originally going to catch the 8:25 bus to Canfranc, but I was locked inside the building, as I couldn’t figure out how the key that was supposed to unlock the door worked. The gates were closed with a padlock, so I just went upstairs and rested a bit. Viernes por la mañana, tenía pensando coger el autobús a las 8.25 a Canfranc, pero me encontré cerrado en el edificio. No sabía como funcionaba la cerradura. Volví a la cama para descansar un poco más.

I went downstairs again around 9:30, had breakfast and explored a bit before catching the bus at 12:00. Me bajé otra vez sobre las 9:30, desayuné y exploré el pueblo un poco más antes de coger al autobus a las 12.00.

Canfranc is a can’t miss site for anyone travelling through this region of the Pyrenees. It’s home of an abandoned train station. The train station is mysterious and beautiful, and of course, it has spectacular views of the mountains. The station was closed in 1970 when there was a train derailment on the French side (France is about 5 kilometres away), causing the destruction of a bridge which France never rebuilt. Two passenger trains arrive daily from Zaragoza. No se puede perder Canfranc si estás viajando por esta parte de los Pirineos. Es el hogar de una estación de tren abandonada. La estación es misteriosa y preciosa, y desde luego tiene vistas espectaculares de los montes. Se cerró la estación en 1970 cuando había un descarrilamiento de tren por el lado francés que causó la destrucción de un puente. Francia nunca reconstruyó. (France está a unos 5 kilómetros de Canfranc). Hoy en día hay dos trenes de pasajeros que llegan de Zaragoza todos los días.

After exploring this fascinating village of 454 people, I returned to Jaca for lunch. After lunch, I set upon my afternoon goal, climbing Rapitán to the fort. The hike takes a little over an hour from the city centre and is located 1142 metres (3746 feet) above sea level. I walked around the fort, wrote in my personal travel journal, meditated and enjoyed the views before heading back to Jaca. Después de explorar esta pueblo fascinante de 454 personas, volví a Jaca para comer. Después de comer, tocaba el reto de la tarde: subir Rapitán al fuerte de Rapitán. La ruta tarda más o menos una hora del centro de la ciudad y está situado a 1142 metros sobre el mar. Di una vuelta por el fuerte, escribí en mi diario de viaje personal, medité y disfruté de las vistas antes de volver a Jaca.

That night, they were having a festival of drum corps, so the entire city reverberated with the percussion. The token Irish pub (in Spain, if a village has two bars, at least one is an Irish pub) was surprisingly empty for being St. Patrick’s Day. I had on my green Ireland shirt for the day. I do have Irish ancestors from way back. Esta noche, había un festival de percusión, y toda la ciudad sonaba de tambores. El pub irlandés (en España, si un pueblo tiene dos bares, al menos uno es irlandés) era vació por ser el día de San Patricio. Estaba llevando mi camiseta irlandesa por el día, como tengo antepasados irlandeses.

Saturday morning, I bid my adieu to Jaca and caught the bus to Huesca, where I would later catch a bus to Barcelona to end my holiday. Sábado por la mañana, me despedí a Jaca y cogí el autobu´s a Huesca, donde tenía que coger un autobús a Barcelona para terminar mis vacaciones.

Huesca capital has a population of 52,347. Unfortunately, the combination bus-train station didn’t have any place to leave my luggage. None of the lockers had keys. I sighed and explored the city with my backpack (training for the Camino) and laptop case (which I won’t have on the Camino). Huesca capital tiene una población de 52.347. No había una consigna para dejar el equipaje, y ninguna de las taquillas disponía de un llave. Me suspiré y exploré la ciudad con mi mochilla (entrenamiento para el Camino) y bolsa de portátil (que no tendré en el Camino).

The Cathedral was nice, and the old town was worth visiting too. I had lunch in the Plaza de Catedral, which I do not recommend. A few hours gave me enough time to see the city, which looked like a good place to live and a good base to explore the Pyrenees. However, I prefer Jaca. La catedral estaba bien, y el casco antiguo merece la pena. Comí en la Plaza de Catedral. No lo recomiendo. Unas horas me dio suficiente tiempo para ver la ciudad. Me parece una sitio bonito para vivir y un buen base para explorar los Pirineos. Sin embargo, prefiero Jaca.

Now…only three provinces left in my quest to set foot in every Spanish province. This holiday, however, was far from over…Ahora…con solo tres provincias en mi reto pisar todas las provincias españolas. Sin embargo, las vacaciones todavía no han acabado.

Teruel to Albarracín

The day had finally arrived for my escape from Fallas. I caught a BlaBlaCar from Valencia to the capital city Teruel, population 35, 675. I arrived to Spain’s smallest provincial capital city around 9:30 and left my luggage at the bus station so I could explore the town without a big pack and computer case. El día, por fin, ha llegado para mi escape de Las Fallas. Cogí un BlaBlaCar desde València a la capital de la provincia de Teruel, población 36.675. Llegué a la capital provincial más pequeña de España sobre las 9.30 y dejé el equipaje en la estación de autobuses para poder explorar la ciudad sin una mochila grande y bolsa de portátil.

I had been to Teruel before in 2011, and I have been wanting a return visit ever since. I had a coffee at the bar inside the tower across from the bus station before setting off to re-explore. Ya había estado en Teruel una vez antes, en 2011, y he querido volver desde entonces. Me tomé un café en el bar dentro del torre enfrente de la estación antes de empezar a explorar la ciudad una vez más.

I had already visited a few of the museums on the first trip, so this visit was just to walk around the city and enjoy the atmosphere. The town is home of Mudéjar architecture, and I climbed up one of the towers, el Torre de El Salvador. It gave excellent vantage points of the city and surrounding countryside. Ya había visitado muchos de los museos en mi primer viaje, y esta visita era para pasear la ciudad y disfrutar su ambiente. Es el hogar de la arquitectura Mudéjar. Subí uno de los torres, el Torre de El Salvador. Dio vistas excelentes de la ciudad y el paisaje próximo.

I also visited the most famous statue of the city, El Torico. I loved the little bull. También visité la estatua más famosa de la ciudad, El Torico. Me encanta el toro pequeño.

I was surprised and happy I double-checked the bus timetable when I left my baggage, as the bus left at 14:10, not 15:30 as stated on the internet. Remember, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet! I had a quick bocadillo de chorizo before taking off to Albarracín. Me sorprendí cuando comprobé el horario de autobús cuando dejé el equipaje, como el autobús salió a las 14.10 y no a las 15.30 como dice en internet. Recuerda, no se puede creer todo que pone en internet. Comí un bocadillo de chorizo en la estación antes de coger el autobus a Albarracín.

The bus was more a large van, and it was pretty full. It also served as school transport between the school on the outskirts of Albarracín and the village. El autobús es mejor dicho un furgoneta grande, y estaba casí completo. También sirve como el transporte escolar entre la escuela en las afueras de Albarracín y el pueblo.

Albarracín, population 1010, is a beautiful medieval village in the Sierra de Albarracín located on the Guadalaviar River. It has been a Monumento Nacional since 1961. I arrived about 15:00 and found my pensión, no thanks to Google Maps which was confusing. Again, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Albarracín, población 1010, es un pueblo medieval precioso en la Sierra de Albarracín situado en el Río Guadalaviar. Ha sido un Monumento Nacional desde 1961. Llegué sobre las 15.00 y encontré mi pensión. Google Maps no sirvió nada de ayuda y solo me confundió. Otra vez más, no se puede creer todo que hay en internet.

I checked in and left my stuff behind and went exploring the town. I found myself on a trail that led out to a hermitage not too far from the pueblo that provided spectacular views of the village and surrounding mountains. Hice check-in y dejé mis cosas en la pensión y fui a explorar. Me encontré en un sendero que fue hasta una ermita cerca al pueblo. Había vistas espectaculares del pueblo y el monte.

I retraced my steps and then went to the top of hill that had the city walls and walked along them for a short while. I found myself in the village shortly after, stopping at the tourism office to double check the time the one bus left in the morning (8.55, and it was on time too, spoiler alert). I had a quick coffee and walked along the Fluvial Trail next to the Guadalaviar. Volví y después subí el monte que tenía las murallas de la ciudad. Caminé a lado de ellas un rato y después me encontré en el pueblo. Verifiqué el horario del único autobús (8.55, y llegó puntual, aviso de espoiler)

The cathedral and castle were closed, but I did go up to the castle to see what ruins I could. The streets are beautifully preserved and cobblestone. La catedral y el castillo estaban cerrados, pero subí las ruinas del castillo. Las calles son buen preservados y adoquinadas.

It was hard to find a cheap place for dinner that was open on a Wednesday in March that was a workday for 95% of Spain, so I splurged a bit. I got a good night’s sleep and left the next morning at 8.55. I arrived back in Teruel and had time to go to the meeting point for my next BlaBlaCar that would take me to Zaragoza where a bus for my next destination was awaiting me. Era algo difícil encontrar un sitio barato para cenar cuando era un miércoles de marzo y la mayoría de la península tenían que trabajar. Entonces, me traté a una cena un poco más cara que normal. Me dormí bien y cogí el autobus a las 8.55. Llegué a Teruel y me dio tiempo para llegar al punto de encuentro del BlaBlaCar que me llevó a Zaragoza donde tenía que coger un autobús al próximo destino. Jueves es el día del mercadillo de Teruel.

I have visited a ton of beautiful places in Spain. Albarracín is by far one of the most spectacular I have had the opportunity to see. He visto muchos sitios preciosos en España. Albarracín es uno de los más espectulares e impresionantes que he tenido la oportunidad ver.

Él-This Strange Passion (1953)

Sometimes things are improved with translation, like the name of a 1953 film from Spanish director Luis Buñuel. Él, or “He” is just too simple and doesn’t get into what the film is really about. “This Strange Passion”, or “Ese pasión rara” fits so much better. It’s based on the novel Él by Spanish writer Mercedes Pinto. A veces las cosas sí, se mejoran con la traducción, como el nombre de una película de 1953 de director español Luis Buñuel. Él es un nombre muy simple y no explica nada del argumento de la película. El nombre estadounidense This Strange Passion, o Ese pasión rara, es un nombre mejor. La base de la película es una novela de escritora española Mercedes Pinto, “Él”.

During a feet-washing ceremony at a local church, Francisco (Arturo de Córdova) sees Gloria (Delia Garcés) and for him, it’s love at first sight. Gloria feels otherwise, and later her fiancée, Raúl (Luis Beristáin) explains that she’s engaged to him. After a party meant to win her away from Raúl, the film flash forwards to after she’s married to Francisco and she runs into Raúl. She tells Raúl all their problems. Durante una ceremonia de lavar pies en una iglesia del pueblo, Francisco (Arturo de Córdova) ve a Gloria (Delia Garcés). Para él, es amor en primera vista. No es correspondida ese amor. Después, su prometido, Raúl (Luis Beristáin) explica que está comprometido con ella. Después de una fiesta para ganar el corazón de Gloria, la película se adelanta al futuro cuando Francisco y Gloria están casados y Gloria se encuentra con Raúl. Gloria cuenta todo lo que está pasando a Raúl.

Francisco is obsessed with Gloria. It’s obviously a very abusive relationship. He shoots `her with blanks at one point because she confessed to Father Velasco about their weird relationship. Later, he strangles her and nearly throws her off the top of a church. After Gloria confides in Raúl, Francisco figures it out and tries to kill her in her sleep. This is the final straw and she runs away. This literally drives Francisco crazy, allowing for Buñuel to slip in his surrealism in an otherwise straightforward flick. Francisco está obsesionado de Gloria. Obviamente es una relación abusiva. Francisco tira blancos de pistola a Gloria porque ella ha confesado a Padre Velasco de su relación extraña. Después, le estrangula y casí le tira del techo de una iglesia. Cuando Gloria confía en Rául, Francisco se entera y intenta asesinarle cuando está durmiendo. While touching on the same themes as Ensayo de un Crimen, Él doesn’t live up to the 1955 film for me. This film is more a straight forward thriller, reminiscent of Hitchcock, whereas Ensayo de un Crimen is more a dark comedy, more my style. The two films together would make an interesting study. French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan used the film in his classes to show what paranoia looks like, according to Wikipedia. Mientras se trata de los mismos temas como Ensayo de un Crimen, Él, al menos para mi, no es tan buena como la película de 1955. Esta es más una película de thriller que me recuerda de Hitchcock, y Ensayo de un Crimen es más una comedia negra que es más mi estilo. Las dos películas juntas serían un estudio interesante. El psicoanalista Jacques Lacan usó la película en sus clases para mostrar que es paranoia, según Wikipedia.

Buñuel said, while he was disappointed in the film and wanted to remake it, he put a lot of himself in the film, which makes me wonder about what sort of person he was in real life. Buñuel dijo que, aunque era decepcionado de la película y quería hacer un remake, se metió a si mismo mucho en la película. Ahora tengo que preguntarme que tipo de persona era en la vida real.

It’s well worth seeing for any Buñuel enthusiast. Para cualquier entusiasta de Buñuel, vale la pena verla.

Escape from Fallas!

I love the monumentos of Fallas, I really do. The fireworks are a dazzling display each and every time. The Carrers de Llum are a masterpiece. And who doesn’t have a certain fascination with watching things safely burn? Molan los monumentos de Fallas, de verdad. Los fuegos artificiales son una exhibición resplandeciente cada vez. Els Carrers de Llum son obras maestras. ¿Y a quién no le fascina cosas quemar (con mucha precaución)?

However, I do not like hordes of people, and I do like travelling. As I haven’t had a lot of holiday time this school-year to take off to unexplored rincones of Spain, I decided a while back that I was going to use this time to travel. Sin embargo, no me gustan las aglomeraciones de gente,pero me gusta viajar. Como no he tenido muchos festivos este año escolar para explorar rincones desconocidos de España, decidí hace mucho tiempo que iba a usar estas vacaciones para viajar.

I saw various monuments being planted and the streets lit up before leaving on Wednesday morning. Y antes de irme, vi la planta de varios monumentos y las calles llenas de luces antes de marcharme miércoles por la mañana.

My stops included Teruel capital, Albarracín, Jaca, Canfranc and Huesca capital before ending the trip in Barcelona for the weekend. Las paradas incluyeron Terul capital, Albarracín, Jaca, Canfranc y Huesca capital antes de acabar en Barcelona por el fin de semana.

Teruel was nice to visit again, Albarracín and Jaca incredible jewels, Canfranc is a special place, and Barcelona always rocks. I even found a new, special place in Barcelona I hadn’t been to before. Now that I’ve visited Huesca, there are only three Spanish provinces left for me to visit. Estaba bien visitar Teruel otra vez más. Albarracín y Jaca con joyas preciosas. Canfranc es un sitio especial, y Barcelona siempre mola mogollón. Incluso descubrí un sitio especial en Barcelona que no conocía antes. Y con Huesca…ahora solo me quedan tres provincias españolas para visitar.

I want to take time to write about them the way they deserve, so be on the look out very soon. For now…time to rest. Quería tomar mi tiempo para escribir de ellos como merecen, entonces…a continuación. Por ahora…toca descansar.

The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz from Spanish director Luis Buñuel was years ahead of its time. As I was watching it, I kept having to remind myself that this was filmed in Mexico in the 1950s and not in 2000s Hollywood. Ensayo de un crimen de director español Luis Buñuel era muy precoz. Cuando estaba viéndola, tenía que recordarme que era grabada en México en los años 1950 y no en los años 2000 en Hollywood.

Archibaldo de la Cruz (Ernesto Alonso) wants to kill. Ever since his childhood governess told him a tale about his music box right before she died, he has been obsessed with death and murder. He threatens to kill the nun taking care of him, and she runs straight to the nearest empty elevator/lift shaft where she falls to her death. Appearing before the judge, Archibaldo confesses his many crimes. Archibaldo de la Cruz (Ernesto Alonso) quiere asesinar. Desde el momento de su juventud cuando su institutriz le dijo un cuento de su caja de música antes de morirse, Archibaldo se ha obsesionado de la muerte. Amenaza a matarle a la monja que le cuida, y la monja corre por los corredores hasta un ascensor vacío donde se cae a su muerte. Antes del juez, Archibaldo confiesa todos sus crímenes.

Archibaldo is a womanizer. Every woman he meets, he wines, dines and dreams of murdering. Patricia (Rita Macedo) is found dead with a suicide note after a date where he fantasized about killing her. He next turns his affections to Carlota (Ariadna Welter) and Lavinia (Miroslava). Will they make it out alive? Archibaldo es un mujeriego. Con todas las mujeres que conoce, le invita a vino, a cenar, y sueña con asesinarles. Después de una cita con Patricia (Rita Macedo), el cadáver de ella es encontrado con una nota de suicidio. Había soñado con asesinarle. Después, conoce a Carlota (Ariadna Welter) y Lavinia (Miroslava). ¿Van a sobrevivir?

The film is characterized by very dark humour, as Archibaldo de la Cruz is the sort of protagonist Dexter and House of Cards made popular this century. The mix of fantasy and reality is a staple of Buñuel, and it keeps the viewer on his or her toes, wondering what is real and what is fantasy within the context of a fictional world. La película es un ejemplo de humor negro, como Archibaldo de la Cruz es el tipo de protagonista que las series Dexter y House of Cards hicieron popular este siglo. La mezcla de fantasía y realidad es una esencia de Buñuel. Los espectadores no saben que va a pasar y tampoco saben si es fantasía o realidad dentro de este mundo de ficción.

Buñuel originally worked on the screenplay with the writer of the novel, Rodolfo Usigli, but the two had a falling out over their visions. Usigli wanted a more faithful adaptation. Buñuel había trabajado en el guion con el escritor de la novela, Rodolfo Usigli, pero los dos discutieron de sus visiones. Usigli quería una adaptación más fiel al libro.

The film has inspired a great deal of academic study, especially by retired professor Victor Fuentes. There are a lot of correlations between this film and Buñuel’s 1953 film Él. I hope to be able to find this film for next week! La película ha inspirado muchos académicos, incluso profesor jubilado Victor Fuentes. Hay muchas conexiones entre esta película y Él, una película de 1953 de Buñuel. Espero poder encontrar esta película para la semana que viene.

Of note, Miroslava, the Czech actress who played Lavinia, committed suicide in 1955 and this was her last film. Quiero mencionar que esta era la última película de actriz checa Miroslava, quien interpretó Lavinia. Después de hacer la película, se suicidó.

Museu d’Història de València

I was hoping to go on a 15 kilometre-hike this weekend, but after a bad bike accident on Friday, I had to spend the weekend resting. I’m more mentally shook up than physically, but I do have a nasty scratch on my face, and my right knee is not 100% okay. I was going to write an entry about the disrespectful attitudes toward cyclists in València, despite the fact the mayor wants to make València one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe. However, I’m trying not to dwell on negativity and focus on the positive. It could’ve been a lot worse. Estaba esperando hacer una ruta de 15 kilómetros este fin de semana, pero después de un mal accidente de bicicleta el viernes, tenía que descansar este finde. Me duele más la salud mental que la salud física, pero tengo un mal golpe en la cara, y la rodilla derecha está algo lesionado. Iba a escribir una entrada sobre las actitudes negativas hacía los ciclistas en València, a pesar de que el alcalde actual quiere hacer València una ciudad super bici-friendly. Sin embargo, no quiero enfocarme en lo negativo y mirar lo positivo. Tenía mucha suerte que no fuera más grave.

I’ve been meaning to visit the Museu d’Història de València (Valencia History Museum) for a while. Located just over the Valencia city limits in Mislata, the museum is free on Sundays. I decided to take advantage of this and escape the madness that is Fallas. (I respect the festival, and I find some of the monuments for Fallas really interesting. However, as large groups of people trigger panic attacks, I try to avoid them as much as possible!) He tenido pendiente una visita al Museu d’Història de València durante un rato ahora. Situado justo al limite de Mislata a lado de València, el museo es gratis todos los domingos. Decidí aprovechar la entrada gratuita y escapar la locura de Fallas. (Por cierto, respeto el festivo, y creo que algunos monumentos de Fallas son interesantes, pero como suelo tener ansiedad e incluso ataques de pánico en aglomeraciones de gente, intento evitar los multitudes.

The museum opened on May 7th, 2003. The exhibits are in Valencian-Catalan and Spanish, but there is also information available in English and French. The museum takes visitors throughout eight eras in Valencian history, from Valentia in 138 BC to the actual Valencia we know today. There are displays and artifacts from each period, along with information about life and major events. El museo abrió el 7 de mayo de 2003. La información de las exhibiciones está escrita en valenciano-catalán y castellano, pero también dispone de información en inglés y francés. El museo lleva los visitantes por la historia de Valencia en 8 épocas, desde su fundación como Valentia en 138 a.C hasta la València de hoy en día que conocemos y queremos. Hay exhibiciones y artefactos de cada época, y también información de la vida cotidiana y los eventos de cada época.

The museum also has a Time Machine (Máquina del Tiempo), which takes visitors through a virtual reality tour of Valencia’s past. También el museo tiene una Máquina del Tiempo, que lleva los visitantes por un tour de realidad virtual del pasado de València.

The museum is located in an old underground reservoir designed by Ildefonso Cerdá and Leodegario Marchessaux. El museo está ubicado en un depósito antiguo que fue diseñado por Ildefonso Cerdá y Leodegario Marchessaux.

It was definitely worth checking out. It’s located close to the amazing Parque de Cabecera and the Bioparc Zoo (which pertain to Valencia, not Mislata, I believe.) Vale la pena visitar. Está a lado al increíble Parque de Cabecera y el Bioparc, que creo que pertenece a València y no Mislata.

In the 1959 film Nazarín, Spanish director Luis Buñuel presents us with a story of an excellent priest who wasn’t appreciated by his own church. En la película de 1959 Nazarín, director español Luis Buñuel nos presenta con una historia de un cura de categoria quien no era apreciada por su iglesia.

Hmm. Interesante.

Padre Nazario (Francisco Rabal) is poor. He lives in a pensión in the dodgy end of town frequented by prostitutes and gives away everything he has to help people with even less than he has. When Andara (Rita Macedo), a prostitute, comes to him for help after killing a rival, he decides to help her hide from the authorities. Andara sets everything ablaze to clean, and Nazario is now a wanted man. Padre Nazario (Francisco Rabal) es pobre. Vive en una pensión en un barrio malo donde hay muchas prostitutas y da todo su dinero a la gente que tiene aún menos que él tiene. Cuando Andara (Rita Macedo), una prostituta, le visita buscando ayuda, el Padre decide ayudarle esconder de la policía. Después, para “limpiar”, Andara empieza un incendio. Ahora, la policía también están buscando a Nazario.

Nazario embarks on a pilgrimage, having to rely on the generosity of strangers to survive each day. Andara and Beatriz, the owner of the pensión (played by Marga López) track him down, and they ask him to he perform miracles. He only prays, but to the people he helps, it’s a miracle. He will later be called “insane” by the church. Nazario empieza una peregrinación, y tiene que depender en la generosidad desconocidos para sobrevivir cada día. Andara y Beatriz (Marga López), la dueña de la pensión, lo encuentran y le piden hacer milagros. Solo reza para la gente, pero para ellos, es un milagro. Después, la iglesia le llaman un loco y le castigan.

The film examines faith while criticising society and the Catholic Church. I found Nazario an inspiring character, and I’m looking forward to reading the novel by Benito Pérez Galdós to see how it differs. Franciso Rabal excelled in his role as the priest. The film is more of what I expect from Buñuel. La película examina la fe mientras a la misma vez critica la Iglesia Católica y la sociedad en general. Me inspiró el personaje de Nazario, y espero poder leer la novela de Benito Pérez Galdós para ver las diferencias. Francisco Rabal era excelente en su papel como el cura. La película es lo que espera de Buñuel.

Mexico chose the film as its selection in the 1960 Oscars, but it was not chosen as a finalist. México eligió la película como su selección de Oscar en 1960, pero no fue elegida como finalista.

Located 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the capital of Valencia, Chulilla, population 632, is a beautiful village with spectacular views of the nearby mountains. It is situated on the River Turia and is close to some famous hanging bridges that are awaiting my next visit. Ubicado a 60 kilómetros de València capital, Chulilla, población 632, es un pueblo precioso con vistas espectaculares de los montes cercanos. Está situado en el Río Turia y está cerca a unos puentes colgantes famosos que me esperan en otra visita.

My friend and I decided to take off to the village this early March Saturday morning. Sometimes it’s filled with local tourists, but today the streets were pretty clear. There is only one shop in the town, a small supermarket, and there are a few cafés and bars. It’s a great place to escape to while Valencia is starting to go wild over the upcoming Fallas festival. Mi amigo y yo decidimos ir al pueblo este sábado del principios del marzo. A veces, el pueblo está lleno de turistas de la provincia de Valencia, pero hoy las calles estaban bastante vacías. Solo hay una tienda en el pueblo, un supermercado pequeño, y hay algunos cafés y bares. Es un sitio genial adonde escapar mientras València capital está volviéndose loco con Fallas.

We parked in a car park on the outskirts of town. The Church of the Virgin of the Angels (la Iglesia de la Virgen de los Ángeles) dominates the village, which appears similar to the white villages of Andalucía. Above the town is the Castle of Chulilla ruins. It’s a very easy walk from the centre of the village (in fact, I’m not counting it as a route for the 40 Ruta Challenge). The mountain Muela is a bit of a steep ascent to arrive to the ruins, but it’s worth it for the views. Aparcamos en un parking en las afueras del pueblo. La Iglesia de la Virgen de los Ángeles domina las vistas del pueblo, que es algo parecido a los pueblos blancos de Andalucía. Arriba del pueblo yace las ruinas del Castillo de Chulilla. Es un camino corto y fácil desde el centro del pueblo (de hecho, no voy a contarlo como una ruta para el reto de 40 Rutas). El monte Muela tiene algo de pendiente para llegar a las ruinas, pero vale la pena para las vistas.

The Castle of Chulilla is a Bien de Interés Cultural (since 1986!) and dates back to Roman Times. During the Muslim period, the castle was added to and was one of the most important castles in the region. Desde 1986, el Castillo de Chulilla ha sido un Bien de Interés Cultural y es de la época romana. Durante la época musulmana, hicieron el castillo aún más grande y era uno de los castillos más importantes de la zona.

Besides the hanging bridges, I would also like to be brave enough to try rock climbing, another reason why it’s popular with locals. The steep cliffs are excellent to try. I’ve only been climbing once, and I didn’t do so well, so it would be a very long-term goal, but it’s well worth it. Aparte de los puentes colgantes, también me gustaría ser valiente y probar escalar, otra razón por su popularidad con la gente de la región. Los acantilados son buenos para escalar. Solo he escalado una vez, y no lo hice muy bien, entonces, sería un reto durante mucho tiempo, pero creo que valdría la pena.

After meandering the streets for a while, we went to visit the old hotel and spa (balneario), which was closed a few years ago during the never-ending crisis. There is a nearby dam that was damaged in the flood of 1957, according to my friend. Después de deambular las calles un rato, fuimos a ver el balneario antiguo. Se cerró hace unos años dado a la crisis sin fin. Hay una presa cerca que era dañado en la inundación de 1957, según mi amigo.

It was a great morning, and Chulilla was a village not to be missed. I hope to get back to do that bridge route soon. There is no public transport to the village, so visitors must have access to a car. Era una buena manera de pasar una mañana, y Chulilla es un pueblo para no perder. Espero volver para hacer la ruta de los puentes pronto. No hay transporte público al pueblo, entonces, los visitantes tiene que disponer de un coche.
