The 2017 Goyas, Spain’s Oscar’s, was held on February 4, 2017, and the winner was Tarde para la ira, upsetting the ever popular (at least in Spain) A Monster Calls. It also won against Julieta from director Pedro Almodóvar, El hombre de las mil caras and Que Dios Nos Perdone. I’ll write about Tarde next week, but this week I’m going to focus on the favourite, since the Catalán director J.A. Bayona has been announced as the director for the next Jurassic Park film. Basically, I’m procrastinating Buñuel a bit. Las Goyas de 2017 se celebraron el 4 de febrero, y ganó Tarde para la ira. Todo el mundo pensaba que iba a ganar Un monstruo viene a verme. Las otras nominaciones eran Julieta (de Almodóvar), El hombre de las mil caras y Que Dios Nos Perdone. Ya escribiré sobre Tarde la semana que viene. Este semana, voy a escribir sobre la favorita, como el director catalán J.A. Bayona ha sido elegido para dirigir la nueva Jurassic Park. También me da pereza escribir sobre Buñuel esta semana. 

Bayona has only directed three films to date, and only one of them has been in Spanish. In 2007, his first feature film, El orfanato, was a success in not only Spain but across the world. In 2012, The Impossible, his English-language debut, told the story of a Spanish family trapped in the 2004 tsunami. He was criticised for making the characters English instead of Spanish, but he wanted to bring the story to more people. It starred my favourite actor, Ewan McGregor, and Naomi Watts, who was nominated for an Oscar. Hasta ahora, Bayona solo ha dirigido tres películas, y solo una en español. En 2007, su primera película, El orfanato, tenía mucho éxito en España y todo el mundo. En 2012, Lo imposible era su primera película en inglés, y era la historia de una familia española que estaba atrapado en el tsunami de 2004. Le criticaron mucho para hacer los personajes ingleses en lugar de español, pero el director dijo que quería que la película sea más accesible para el mundo no hispanohablante. Era protaganizado por mi actor preferido, Ewan McGregor, y Naomi Watts, quien recibió una nominación de Oscar. 

A Monster Calls mixes fantasy and reality, reminiscent of a much better film, El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labryinth). Conor (Lewis MacDougall is amazing in the role!) is dealing with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) terminal cancer. His grandmother is played by Sigourney Weaver. One night, a tree monster (Liam Neeson) visits him and says that he will tell Conor three stories before Conor tells him the story of his nightmares. Un monstruo viene a verme mezcla fantasía y realidad (¿Soy el único cantando Álex Ubago ahora?) y me recuerda de una película mejor, El laberinto del fauno. Conor (Lewis MacDougall hace genial en el papel) está pasándolo mal porque su madre (Felicity Jones) tiene cáncer y no tiene mucho tiempo para vivir. Su abuela es interpretada por Sigourney Weaver. Una noche, un monstruo de árbol viene a visitarle y le dice que le contarará a Conor tres historias antes de Conor le diga al monstruo la historia de sus pesadillas. 

While the film is done quite well, it failed to connect with me. I don’t think it was the dark subject mother (though I’m really not in the mood to watch a 12-year-old deal with his mother dying of cancer!). I just couldn’t get into the fantasy aspect. While it worked in El laberinto del fauno, I just immediately zoned out whenever I saw the tree monster. I’m not a fan of fantasy outside of vampires and Hermione Granger I mean Professor Minerva McGonagall I mean Harry Potter. Aunque la película está bastante bien hecha, no pude conectarme bien con ella. No creo que la material sea responsable (aunque para ser sincero, no estaba en el humor para ver una película que trata de una madre muriéndose y su hijo de 12 años reaccionando). No me gustaba el aspecto de fantasía. Aunque funcionaba bien en El laberinto del fauno, Cuando vi el monstruo de árbol, de repente dejé de hacer caso a la película. No me gusta fantasía si no trata de vampiros o Hermione Granger digo Profesora Minerva McGonagall digo Harry Potter. 

The film also reeked of Goya bait, if such a thing exists. It probably lost because it was in English, not Spanish. Despite being Goya bait, the film had great cinematography, great acting and a decent script. The subject matter at being such a dark time in the world probably didn’t help at the box office. También era bastante obvio que la película estaba hecha para ganar Goyas. Puede ser que haya perdido la Goya porque está en inglés y no castellano. La película tenía fotografía bonita, los actores eran geniales, y el guión era bueno. La material es algo oscuro para una época oscura en el mundo, y eso no ayudó en la taquilla. 

It did win nine other Goyas, however, including Best Director for Bayona, and Best Special Effects and Cinematography. Aunque no ganó Mejor Película, ganó 9 Goyas en total, incluso Mejor Director para Bayona y Mejor Efectos Especiales y Fotografía. 

For fans of sad fantasy, I recommend it. Otherwise…I understand why it didn’t win the Goya. Para los aficinados de fantasia triste, la recomiendo. Si no…entiendo porque no ha ganado la Goya.

PS/PD: I have since seen Tarde para la ira. The “ira” must be the people who paid money to see it. Not a good film, definitely not a Goya-film. I won’t be writing about it! Ya he visto Tarde para la ira. La “ira” tiene que ser de la gente que han pagado 9€ para verla. No era una buena película. No era para los Goyas. No voy a escribir de ella.
