That eye. All I remembered from this film was that eye. Ese ojo. Solo recordaba de este película corta era ese ojo.
Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog) was the brainchild of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. That right there says a lot about the short. Un Chien Andalou (Un perro andaluz) era una idea experimental de Luis Buñuel y Salvador Dalí. Allí tienes toda la explicación del cortometraje.
In the beginning, a woman has her eye sliced open. We *think* the clouds cutting across the moon will be the metaphor for it, but no, it happens. Al principio de la película, alguien le corta el ojo de una mujer. Antes, pensamos que los nubes cortando la luna será un metáfora por ello, pero no. Lo vemos.
Time jumps around, and through the next 16 minutes, we see a man dressed eccentrically riding a bike, a woman hit by a car, a man pulling a dead horse buried in a piano, a couple walking on a beach, and that ending spring scene with people buried up to their heads on the beach. There is a severed hand at one point, and ants licking a hand wound at another point. There is also a sexual assault scene. El tiempo salta, y durante los próximos 16 minutos, vemos un hombre vestido de manera excéntrica yendo por bici, una mujer atropellada por un coche, un hombre tirando un caballo muerto enterrado en un piano, una pareja caminando por la playa, y una escena final de primavera con personas enterradas hasta el cuello en la playa. Hay una mano amputada, hormillas lamando una lesión de una mano, y una escena de acoso sexual.
But what does it all mean? Pero ¿qué significa?
Buñuel said absolutely nothing. It was a combination of bizarre dreams he and Dalí had brought to life with the 1920s technology. It’s experimental and surrealist, and scenes jump from one to another without a logical transition, just like a dream. There is nothing linear about the storytelling. Según Buñuel, nada. Era una mezcla de sueños raros que Buñuel y Dalí tenían. Después, dieron vida a sus sueños con la tecnología de los años 1920. Es experimental y surrealista. No hay ninguna conexión ni transición lógica entre escenas, como los sueños. No hay nada linear de los eventos.
The film was made to not make any sense at all. It was made to shock audiences. It was made to represent a dream world (the purpose of Dalí’s famous artwork, right?) Pero el cortometraje era diseñado para no tener sentido. Lo hicieron para dar un shock al público. Lo hicieron para representar el mundo de los sueños (el objetivo de las obras de Dalí, ¿no?)
The movie has inspired more legends than anything resembling a plot. One legend says the severed hand reportedly belongs to a man desperate for money, so Dalí said he would give him lunch money for the hand. La película inspiró más leyendas que algo que parece un argumento cohesivo. Una leyenda dice que la mano amputada era de un hombre que era tan desesperado por dinero que se la cortó para recibir dinero de Dalí para comprar la comida.
The eye-slicing scene is reportedly a cow’s eye. Dicen que el ojo en la parte más famosa era de una vaca.
No dogs were harmed in the filming of this short film. Maybe a cow, but no dogs. No dogs even appear in the short. No había ningún perro lesionado durante el rodaje. Quizá una vaca, pero no perros. Ni había un perro en la película.
It’s surreal. Es surrealista.

Even though its a short film, it is very iconic and influential. I bet it must have also shocked a lot of people when it was originally first released. With Dali, I am more interested in his mind, processes and ideas than his finished paintings and this small film he made with Bunuel is a really amazing distillation of the unconscious in full flow. It’s difficult to capture the essence of all this in words but this film captures it very vividly.
