I’ve been trying to decide which director to spotlight next for a few months now. Luckily I’ve been busy writing other things here to give me time to procrastinate. However, the decision has been made. In honour of a sequel 20 years in the making premiering at the end of November, I’m going to take a look at the three films that combine Spanish director Fernando Trueba, the Spanish Civil War, and Penélope Cruz. He estado pensando en cual director español para destacar próximo durante unos meses ahora. He tenido muchas más cosas para escribir en el blog para darme más tiempo procrastinar. Sin embargo, por fin he tomado una decisión. Como la segunda parte de La Niña de tus Ojos estrenará al finales del mes, voy a enfocar en tres películas de se juntan director español Fernando Trueba, la Guerra Civil española y Penélope Cruz. 

I could write about all of his films, as he is a talented director and I’ve enjoyed many of his films. However, I’m not a passionate fan of his like I am Pedro Almodóvar, nor does he direct the type of films that lend toward fun entries and fun re-viewings, like Basque director Alex de la Iglesia.  For that reason, I am going to focus on what I call his Spanish War Cruz trilogy. While only two of the films, 1998’s La niña de tus ojos and 2016’s La Reina de España are actually connected, the featured actors and style of 1992’s Belle Epoque make it worth a revisit. Podría escribir de todas sus películas, como es un director con talento y he disfrutado muchas de sus films. Pero como no soy un fan apasionado de él como soy fan friki de Almodóvar, y tampoco dirige el tipo de pelís que favorecen entradas divertidas, como el director vasco Álex de la Iglesia. Por eso, voy a centrar la atención en lo que voy a llamar su trilogia de la Guerra Civil Cruz. Aunque solo dos de las tres películas tienen conexión (La niña de tus ojos (1998) y La Reina de España (2016), los actores y estilo de Belle Epoque (1992) se hace casí igual de las otras. 

Trueba was born in Madrid in January 1955. Before directing films, he studied at the Universidad Complutense (Madrid) and worked as a film critic at Spain’s most important newspaper, El País. His first film, Opera Prima, appeared in 1980, and he worked steadily in the 1980s building his career and reputation.  In 1985, he worked with Las Chicas Almodovares Carmen Maura, Chus Lampreave (RIP), Bibi Anderson and Veróncia Forqué in his first big film, Sé infiel y no mires con quién (“Be unfaithful and don’t look who it is with is a loose translation…the English play is “Not Now, Darling.”) Trueba nació en Madrid en enero de 1955. Antes de ser director, estudió en la Universidad Complutense y trabajó como critico de cine por El País, el periódico más importante de España. Su primera película, Opera Prima, hizo en 1980, y trabajó bastante en los años 1980 para construir su carrera y fama. En 1985, dirigió con algunas Chicas Almodóvar: Carmen Maura, Chus Lampreave (DEP), Bibi Anderson y Verónica Forqué en su primera película con mucha éxito, Sé infiel y no mires con quién.

In 1988 he was named President of  the Academy of Spain’s Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (La Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España), which produce Spain’s Goya awards. En 1988 fue nombrado Presidente de La Academia  de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España), que produce los premios Goyas. 

In 1992, Belle Epoque won 9 Goyas and took home the Best Foriegn Film Oscar in 1993. American audiences weren’t aware then that one of the stars, Penélope Cruz, would later become a household name. En 1992, Belle Epoque ganó 9 Goyas y también el Oscar por Película de No Habla Inglesa en 1993. El público estadounidense no se daban cuenta que después una de las estrellas se harían super famosa allí. 

He then went to direct a Hollywood film with Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Daryl Hannah called Two Much in 1995. I’ve never seen it either, so don’t worry. The failure of this movie caused him to return to Spain and make one of the most famous Spanish films (at least in Spain), La niña de tus ojos, which has a long list of stars, including Penélope Cruz with an Andalusian accent (who sings in German at one point) and took home a long list of Goyas, including Best Picture. I will write more on this film soon. Después, dirigió un film de Hollywood con Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith y Daryl Hanna que se llama Two Much en 1995. 

In the 2000s, he made a few more films, some documentaries, and he later experimented with animation in Chico y Rita and El artista y la modelo in the 2010s. En los años 2000, hizo algunas películas más, también unos documentales, y después experimentó con películas animadas en Chico y Rita y El artista y la modelo en los años 2010. 

In 2015, he caused a stir when he said that he didn’t feel Spanish and might fight on the side of the enemy if Spain found itself in war. I think everyone in Spain is frustrated with the current government (*cough* corruption *cough*) , so I’m going to cut him some slack for the comments. I probably shouldn’t have called this “director español” in retrospect. ¡Lo siento! Había polémica en 2015 cuando dijo que no sentía nada español y lucharía con el enemigo de España si España estuviera en una guerra. Creo que todos en España estamos harto/frustrados con el gobierno ahora (tos tos corrupción tos tos), entonces, le perdono por sus comentarios. Quizas no debería llamar esta entrada “director español” ahora que lo pienso. ¡Lo siento! 

For me, the name Trueba usually means a quality film, albeit sometimes boring. I’m super excited for the release of La Reina de España, which reunites the cast of La niña de tus ojos. Join me as I return to his Spanish Civil War films in anticipation of it! Para mi, el nombre Trueba suele significa una película de calidad, aunque a veces aburrida. Me emociono bastante con el estreno de La reina de España, con la vuelta de la mayoria de los actores principales de La niña de tus ojos. ¡Espero que me acompañes durante mi vuelta a ver sus películas de la Guerra Civil española anticipando su nueva película!

Fun triva fact: His brother David is also a director, and he himself won a Goya with 2013’s road trip to Almería to see The Beatles flick Vivir es más fácil con los ojos cerrados (Living is easier with your eyes closed.) This film is one of my fave recent Spanish films. Un poco de trivia: Su hermano David también es director quien ganó un Goya con la película de viajes (se trata de un viaje a Almería para ver The Beatles rodean allí), Vivir es más fácil con los ojos cerrados (2013). 

(I plan on exploring the world Luis Buñuel in 2017, which is going to be a very long, hard project that I have to figure out how to do adequately. I may do Berlanga, Bigas Luna or Iciar Bollaín before I get to Buñuel. I mean, you try to explain Un chien andalu to someone who has never seen it! Próximamente tengo pensando explorar el mundo de Luis Buñuel, que va a ser un proyecto que me mete caña. No sé hacerlo adecuadamente. Quizás escribiré de Berlanga, Bigas Luna o Iciar Bollaín antes de Buñuel. ¡Mira, explicas tu Un chine andaluza los que nunca la han visto!)
