Located in the Parque Natural de la Sierra Calderona, El Garbí is one of the most famous mountains in the Comunitat Valenciana. It rises 597 metres (or 601, I’ve seen both stats, and that’s 1,958/1971 feet for the Americans out there!)  above sea level and belongs to the villages of Serra, Estivella and Alabat de Tarongers. Ubicado en el Parque Natural de la Sierra Calderona, El Garbí es uno de los montes más famosos en la Comunitat Valenciana. Con sus 597/601 metros de altura (he leído las dos figuras), el monte pertenece a los pueblos de Serra, Estivella y Alabat de Tarongers. 

One of my friends is into hiking (I’m not the only one) and promised to take me, so when we both finally had a day free, we went. Now that I’m out of Bilbao, I don’t have to wait and wait and wait for a day without rain or to win all the lottery to buy all the hiking materials for hiking in the rain. Por fin, tengo un amigo que es aficionado de senderismo (no soy el único) y me prometió llevar un día, y cuando coincidimos con un día libre, fuimos. Ahora que no estoy en Bilbao, no tengo que esperar y esperar y esperar por un día sin lluvia o ganar la lotería para poder comprar todo el material necesario para hacer senderismo en la lluvia. 

It’s about 30-40 minutes from Valencia, not far from the important port and town Sagunt(o).  After passing what looks to be a beautiful village, Serra, 3074 residents, the road goes up Garbí. We went to the parking near the summit of El Garbí and did a short hike to the very top. El viaje de Valencia al Garbí tarda unos 30 minutos, y el monte no está muy lejos del puerto importante de Sagunt(o). Después de pasar un pueblo que parece bonito, Serra, 3074 habitantes, la carretera sube el Garbí. Fuimos al parking cerca de la cima del Garbí y hicemos una ruta corta hasta la cima. 

The views were beautiful and very different from the mountain views of Northern Spain I am so accustomed to.  There is an ermita (hermitage), the Ermita de La Santa Creu (Holy Cross in Valencian) near by that has a lot of pine cones inside. I am very curious about this story, but a Google search does nothing. Había vistas bonitas y eran distintos de las vistas del monte del norte de España que me había acostumbrado ver. Hay una ermita, La Ermita de La Santa Creu (Cruz) cerca con bastante pinos dentro. Estoy curioso de saber la historia, pero no he encontrado nada en Google. 

We continued walking around the top. There are several hiking routes, but my friend was recovering from strep throat, so we kept it short. We went down to visit a fountain, Fuente de Barraix, and another ermita, la Ermita del Sagrado Corazón. This ermita was beautiful, but it was also falling apart. My friend explained that as it’s at the edge of two village limits, neither one wants to pay for the upkeep. It’s such a shame. Seguímos caminando por arriba. Hay bastantes rutas de senderismo en el Garbí, pero mi amigo estaba recuperando de amigdalitis, y no hicimos mucho. Bajamos para ver un fuente, el Fuente de Barraix, y otra ermita, la Ermita del Sagrado Corazón. Esta ermita era superbonita pero también estaba empezando a estar en ruinas. Mi amigo me explicó que está al limite de dos pueblos y ninguno pueblo quiere pagar el coste de mantenimiento. Es una pena. 

We met with a funeral procession in Serra on the way back, and later with a wedding procession in Paterna (a suburb of Valencia), which hopefully crosses out the superstition of bad luck from the funeral procession. Cruzamos con una procesión funeral por la vuelta, y después con una procesión de boda en Paterna (un pueblo por las afueras de Valencia). Espero que la boda anule la mala suerte de cruzar con una procesión funeral. 

Although we didn’t hike much that afternoon, I have definite plans to return and climb the mountain from Segarte. For that reason, there is a (1) in this post’s title! Aunque no caminamos mucho esa tarde, tengo pensado volver y subir el monte desde Segarte. Por eso, he puesto (1) en el título.
