Camino de Levante (Camino de Santiago). Etapa 1. Valencia-Catarroja.

Everywhere you look (everywhere you look) there’s a Camino to Santiago in Spain. Even in Valencia, you have the option of the Camino de Levante or the Ruta de la Lana (Wool). To keep in practice for my eventual Camino del Norte finale next summer (and the Camino Primitivo en 2018), I’ll be doing various etapas on two lesser known Caminos. En España, parece que todos los caminos van a Santiago. Incluso en Valencia, puedes elegir entre el Camino de Levante o la Ruta de la Lana. Para seguir preparado para acabar con el Camino del Norte el verano que viene y hacer el Camino Primitivo en 2018, voy a hacer varias etapas de dos Caminos menos conocidos.

To celebrate Oct. 9, el Dia de la Comunitat Valenciana, I took off for my first eight kilometres on the Camino de Levante. I had intended to reach Silla, but I wanted to eat at home and ended up being very sleepy, so I stopped in Catarroja. I was a bit worried about a lack of yellow arrows, but I needen’t have worried. The Camino was just as every bit well marked as the Camino del Norte. Para celebrar el 9 de Octubre, el Dia de la Comunitat Valenciana (en valenciano, “dia” no lleva tilde), hice los primeros 8 kilometros del Camino de Levante. Quería llegar hasta Silla, pero también quería comer en Casa y iba con bastante sueño, y paré por el día en Catarroja. Antes de irme, me preocupaba que no fuera flechas amarillas, pero no hizo falta preocuparme. El Camino de Levante era tan buen señalado como el Camino del Norte.

I got off to a later start than intended. My bed is much more comfortable than the albergue mattresses. It was 10.00 by the time I got out the door, and after stopping for a relaxing café con leche, it was 10.30. The Camino de Levante starts in the Plaza de la Reina next to the Cathedral, but I started from my house, making my way to San Vicente Mártir, one of the most important streets in Valencia named for their patron saint. It’s about 10-15 minutes. Me salí más tarde que quería. Mi cama es mucho más cómoda que los colchones de los albergues. Ya eran las 10 cuando salí de casa, y después de parar para mi relaxing café con leche, eran las 10.30. El Camino de Levante empieza en la Plaza de la Reina a lado de la Catedral, pero empecé desde mi casa, caminando hasta San Vicente Mártir, una de las calles más importantes valencianas que lleva el nombre de su patrón.

It seemed to take forever to reach the edge of town, as the end of the street is not in one of the best barrios of the city. It has character though. The first village was Alfafar, which the online page at MundiCamino advertised as being beautiful, although the Camino didn’t officially enter the town. I think they may have changed it, as it went by a beautiful church near the ayuntamiento (town hall). I stopped for a tostada con tomate and café con leche near the beginning of the town, and their slow-despite-not-being-at-all-busy service (a half hour? Seriously?) didn’t impress me much. (It put me way behind my intended schedule, as I had stuff to do in the afternoon.) Me parecía tardar mucho tiempo en llegar a las afueras de Valencia, como la calle no acaba en uno de los mejores barrios de la ciudad. Pero tiene personalidad, al menos. El primer pueblo era Alfafar, que la página web de MundiCamino dijo que era un pueblo bonito aunque el Camino no entra el pueblo. Quizás el Camino haya cambiado, porque pasó por una iglesia bonita a lado del ayuntamiento. Paré para tomar una tostada con tomate y café con leche en las afueras del pueblo, y su servicio era muy lento. ¡Tardaron una media hora para servirme un café con leche! Era otra razón que no alcancé Silla, como tenía cosas de hacer por la tarde.

Another 1.6 kilometres brought me to Massanassa. I wasn’t impressed with the Ikea, but I did stop to see a minute of a local fútbol match. The Camino wound through town, and I found myself in Catarroja another kilometre later. The Camino goes right by the train station, and I studied the schedule. As the Camino had been all road-walking except for a few meters through a field that doubled as an unofficial landfill, I decided to call it a day, as I had been to Silla last year and will probably take another easy day to explore the Albufera when I do the next stretch. 1,6 kilómetros después, llegué a Massanassa. No me impresionó su Ikea, pero paré para ver un minuto de un partido de fútbol local. El Camino paseaba por el pueblo, y me encontré en Catarroja uno kilómetro después. El Camino pasa por la estación de Renfe, y miré el horario. Como el Camino era todo por las carreteras menos unos pocos metros por un campo que también sirve como basurero, tomé la decisión volver a Casa. Fui a Silla el año pasado y creo que me gustará quedarme más tiempo para explorar la Albufera el próximo día.

It was all flat, by the way. Not a single hill. It was vastly different from the Camino del Norte, where it is difficult to find a metre without a hill. It was a boring stretch, however. The highlights were the beautiful churches in Alfafar and Massanassa. Era todo plano, sin desnivel, muy distino del Camino del Norte, donde no se puede caminar más de un metro sin pendiente. El paisaje era aburrido, menos las iglesias de Alfafar y Massanassa.

My current plan is to take this to Xátiva, one of my favourite villages in the entire peninsula, then start the Camino de la Lana and take it to the edge of the province of Valencia. However, we all know the Camino takes our best-laid plans and throws them into the sea at Muxia whether we are 1000 kilometres or 1000 centimetres from Santiago. Ahora, mi plan es para caminar hasta Xátiva, uno de mis pueblos preferidos de la península, y después empezar el Camino de la Lana hasta la frontera de la provincia de Valencia. Sin embargo, todo el mundo sabe que al Camino le gusta cambiar nuestros planes y tirarlos al mar en Muxia, no le importa si estamos a 1000 kilómetros o 1000 centímetros desde Santiago.

The Camino de Levante begins in Valencia and goes through Castilla until reaching Zamora, where it joines the Ruta de la Plata. The Ruta de la Lana begins in Alicante or Valencia and joins the Camino Francés in Burgos. El Camino de Levante empieza en Valencia y pasa por Castilla hasta Zamora, donde se junta con la Ruta de la Plata. La Ruta de la Lana empieza en o Alicante o Valencia y se junta con el Camino Francés en Burgos.

Valencia has always drawn me, even before I lived in Spain. Valencia siempre me ha llamado la antención, incluso antes de vivir en España.

In 2003, I was disappointed that I didn’t get to travel to Valencia during my study abroad experience, and it was the first place I travelled to after my move to Spain in 2008. Although my first weekend was met with a “gota fría” (a cold front from the Mediterranean that involves torrential rains and floodings), a loss from Valencia CF (but I did see my favourite David Villa score a goal) and spending too much money, I fell in love with the city. En 2003, me decepcionó que no tenía la oportunidad de viajar a Valencia durante mi tiempo de estudiar en extranjero. Era el primer viaje que hice después de mudarme a España en 2008. Aunque durante mi primer fin de semana había una gota fría, una pérdida de Valencia CF (pero vi El Guaje David Villa marcar un gol) y gastar demasiado dinero, me enamoré de la ciudad.

Valencia CF has been my favourite fútbol club (along with Barcelona, jo sóc culé xe)) since 2006, because it was where David Villa played for. Paella valenciana (with chicken and maybe rabbit) is my favourite food. Vegetarian paella is also a delite for those vegans out there, although not widely available yet. Valencia CF siempre ha sido mi equipo de fútbol (también soy del Barça, jo sóc culé xe) porque era el equipo de David Villa. Paella valenciana (con pollo y a veces conejo) es mi comida preferida. También me gusta paella vegetariano. Sí, existe para los veganos, aunque todavía es algo difícil encontrar.

I lived in Valencia from 2010-2011. It was met with a lot of problems caused by not being paid on time and a series of bad roommates. The people were friendly, but I had my eye set on Barcelona. Barcelona wasn’t meant to be, and during my five years away from Valencia, I dreamt of returning one day. My Barcelona dream ended up being a Valencia dream. Viví en Valencia durante 2010-2011. Tenía bastantes problemas relacionados con el hecho que no me pagaron nunca a tiempo y una serie de compañeros de piso malísimos. Los valencianos son majos, pero estaba mirando a Barcelona. Sin embargo, Barcelona no era un destinto para mi, y durante los cinco años que llevaba fuera de Valencia, siempre soñaba con volver. El sueño barcelonés se convirtió al sueño valenciano.

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and second largest city in what’s known by some as “Països Catalans”, the region where a variant of the Catalán-Valencian-Balear-Andorran-Sardinian language is spoken. The city has 800,000 denizens and a metropolitan area of just over a million. It’s most famous site is the controversial Ciutat de les Arts i Ciencies (City of Arts and Sciences), and it also offers the Bioparc Zoo (which tries to provide natural habitats instead of cages for its animals), Oceanográfico the Torres de Quart and Serranos, museums, beautiful plazas, the Cathedral (supposed home of the Holy Grail), paella. The beach is at the edge of town, far from the historic centre. Valencia es la tercera ciudad más grande de España y la segunda ciudad de una región que algunos se llaman “Països Catalans”, los sitios donde se hablan un variante de catalán-valenciano-balear-andorrano-sardo. La ciudad tiene 800.000 habitantes y la zona metropolitana tiene más de un millón de personas. Su sitio más conocido es la polémica Ciutat de les Arts i Ciencies (Ciudad de Artes y Ciencias) . También se puede visitar el Bioparc, Oceanográfico, los Torres de Quart y Serranos, museos, plazas bonitas, la Catedral (donde se puede encontrar el Santo Grial), paella. Se encuentra la playa en las afueras de la ciudad, algo lejano del casco viejo.

When I left rainy Bilbao for sunny Valencia in June, after my work at the camp was finished, I hit the ground running, learning from my previous experience in Valencia and setting up shop in Madrid and then Bilbao, la capital del mundo. Cuando me marché de Bilbao lluvioso para Valencia asoleado en junio, después de acabar con el trabajo en el campamento, hice mucho en poco tiempo, habar aprendido de mis experiencias en Valencia antes y también de Madrid y Bilbao, la capital del mundo.

In the first two months, while I am still in the process of making friends and looking for that ever elusive boyfriend, I have managed to do the following/Aunque sigo haciendo amigos y buscando el novio elusivo, ya he hecho lo siguiente en solo dos meses:

-Set up a Valenbisi. The bike service costs 30€ a year, and Valencia is pretty bike friendly. (The new mayor Joan Ribó is very pro-bike.) They are setting up even more bike lanes and working to make the streets more safe for cyclists. After the 30€ annual fee, the first half hour is free, and it’s 50 cents an hour on average after that. Ya tengo Valenbisi, el servicio de alquiler bicis. Cuesta 30€ por todo el año, y Valencia es cada vez más bike-friendly. El alcalde nuevo, Joan Ribó, es un fan de bicis. Están poniendo aún más carriles de bici y están trabajando para hacer las calles más seguras para ciclistas. Después de pagar la cuota de 30€ anuales, la primera media hora es gratis y después cuesta unos 50 centímos por la hora más o menos.

-Join the gym. I am back at Abastos, the gym that converted me to going to the gym. I’m back at my love, Body Combat, to combat mental health issues, and my new routine is going to kill me! Apuntarme al gimnasio. Voy a Abastos, el gimnasio que me convirtió a ser una persona del gym (aunque no lo parezco xD). Ya hago Body Combat de nuevo, para luchar contra trastornos de salud mental, y la rutina nueva me va a matar.

-Find a hiking club. I’ve already gone on two excursions with them. Encontrar un club de senderismo. Ya he hecho dos excursiones con ellos.

-Library card. Carnet de lector.

-Find private lessons. They cut down on my writing time, but they help increase my travel funds. Encontrar clases particulares. Aunque no tengo tanto tiempo para escribir, tengo más pasta para viajar.

It took me six weeks to find a flat, but by waiting, I found a good one in a good location. I still have yet to do the monthly metro pass, but as I’m trying to use Valenbisi, I am hoping to avoid this! However, it would mean I could go to the beach whenever I wanted to walk and clear my head. Me tardó seis meses para encontrar piso, pero he encontrado uno bueno en una zona buena. Todavía no me he hecho el abono de transporte, pero como intento usar Valenbisi, espero poder evitar eso. Pero con un abono podría ir a la playa cuando quería para deambular y desconectar.

Now that I’m settled in, working at a great school, and have finished writing about my summer adventures in the Camino de Santiago and Tenerife, I’ll be focusing on hikes and return to focusing on a Spanish director too. However, I am also going to be focusing more time on my novels. I’m not doing Nanowrimo, the annual November writing contest, but I am hoping to finish my third novel and weeding out the mistakes of my second by the end of the year. I hope to make it here at least weekly though, as I have about 10 more hikes to go on before 2016 is over! Ahora que me he establecido aquí en Valencia, trabajando en un instituto bueno, y he acabado escribir de mis aventuras del Camino del Norte y Tenerife, ya volveré a escribir de rutas de senderismo y escribir sobre un director español también. Sin embargo, también voy a trabajar más en las novelas. No voy a hacer Nanowrimo, un concurso de escribir una novela dentro de un mes, pero espero acabar mi tercera novela y editar más de mi segunda novela antes del final del año. Espero escribir aquí al menos una vez la semana. ¡Me quedan sobre 10 rutas antes del terminar 2016!

Port Saplaya.

It was my last Sunday before starting the school year, and I took advantage of a gorgeous autumn day (gone are the days of torrential rain every day. This is València, not Bilbao, and here plou poc però quan plou plou prou.) to go for a long walk along the beach to the next town, Alboraya (home of the horchata, Valencia’s refreshing dairy drink.) Era mi último domingo antes de volver a trabajar, y aproveché de un día precioso de otoño para dar un paseo largo por la playa hasta el próximo pueblo, Alboraya, hogar del horchata, la bebida típica de València de leche y chufe). (Ya no tengo que aguantar lluvia torrencial todos los días. Ese es València, no Bilbao, y aquí plou poc però quan plou plou prou).

I caught the metro to the Amistat barrio, and then went via Valenbisi, the bike-for-hire service from City Hall, along Avenida Blasco Ibañez and through the infamous Cabanyal barrio to the Malvarossa Beach, where I left behind the bike and went walking along the Mediterranean coast. Despite being October, the water wasn’t too cold to dip my feet in. The beach changed from València to Alboraya, and there were less and less people as I continued on. Cogí el metro hasta Amistat, y fui con Valenbisi, el servicio de bicicletas del ayuntamiento, por Avenida Blasco Ibañez y por el barrio de infame Cabanyal hasta la Playa Malvarossa, donde dejé la bici y fui caminando por la costa del mar. Aunque era octubre, el agua no estaba muy fría para mojar los pies. La playa cambió desde Valencia hasta Alboraya, y había menos gente.

I had to go along a bike path next to the road for a bit, as I wanted to go to Port Saplaya, a place that had long been on my Bucket List as it’s called “The Little Venice.” It doesn’t get a lot of fame, and most valencianos know it for its beach, not being “la pequeña Venecia.” Port Saplaya had 1902 residents in 2009. The reason why it markets itself as “La Pequeña Venecia” is because instead of a main square, the port forms a square. That’s right, the town is build around the port, giving it the look of Venice’s famous canals. It’s also a new settlement, as the residential zone didn’t begin until the 1970s. Tenía que caminar por un carril bici a lado de la carretera un rato, como quería ir hasta Port Saplaya, un sitio que lleva años en mi Bucket List porque es conocido como “La Pequeña Venice”. No es muy conocido, y los valencianos lo conocen mejor por su playa, no por ser “La Pequeña Venice”. Es conocido así porque el pueblo se construyó con el puerto como la plaza mayor. Todo del centro del pueblo es el puerto, que lo hace algo parecido a Venecia. En 2009, contaba con 1902 habitantes. También es un pueblo nuevo, como no empezó como una zona residencial hasta los años 1970.

Even more impressive was the Carraixet Gully (Barranco) near the town, with a beautiful 20th century church on the shores of the stream right next to the beach. Para mi, el Barranco Carraixet era más impresionante. Está justo antes del pueblo, y hay una iglesia bonita del Siglo XX por las orillas del Carraixet a lado de la playa.

I had a relaxing café con leche and caught the next bus to Valencia, getting off at the edge of town and Valenbising it back home. Me tomé un relaxing café con leche y cogí el próximo autobús a Valencia, bajando en la primera parada de la ciudad y cogiendo el Valenbisi para volver a casa.

It was a good end to my summer holidays. Era una buena manera de acabar mis vacaciones de verano. Adéu, estiu.

Tenerife, the Set Meravelles.

I had been wanting to travel to Tenerife nearly the entire eight years I’ve lived in Spain, and my trip in Sept. 2016 left me wanting to explore this beautiful island more. It is the largest of the Canary Islands and has the highest population of any Spanish island with 898,680 residents. It’s home to one of the biggest Carnival celebrations outside of Rio de Janeiro and attracts 5 million tourists a year. It is co-capital of the Canary Islands, along with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He querido viajar a Tenerife casí desde mi llegada a España hace ocho años ya. Mi viaje en septiembre de 2016 me dejó con ganas de explorar la isla aún más. Es la isla más grande de las Canarias y también tiene la población más alta de cualquier isla española con 898.680 habitantes. También se encuentra con uno de los Carnivales más grandes fuera de Rio de Janeiro. 5 millones de turistas visitan la isla cada año. Santa Cruz de Tenerife es la capital de las Canarias con Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

I will travel to Fuenteventura and Lanzarote before returning to Tenerife and exploring nearby islands La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Until that wonderful day arrives…I leave you with the SetMeravelles de Tenerife! Creo que viajaré a Fuenteventura y Lanzarote antes de volver a Tenerife y explorar las islas vecinas La Gomera, La Palma y El Hierro. Anaga

The Anaga mountains are the oldest part of the island and are amazing. The villages are a step into the past, and they offer a ton of outdoor activities like hiking. It has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2015. Los montes de Anaga forman la parte más antigua de la isla y son increíbles. Los pueblos parecen ser del pasado, y ofrecen muchas actividades de naturaleza, como senderismo. Ha sido una reserva biosfera desde 2015.

Garachico

52 kilometres (32 miles) west of Santa Cruz lies the beautiful Garachico, a village of 5416 inhabitants. The city still maintains a Spanish character and is considered to be the least-spoilt coastal area of Tenerife. The views of the Atlantic are incredible, and the cobblestone streets are magical. Situado a 52 kilómetros oeste de Santa Cruz, Garachico es un pueblo precioso con 5416 habitantes. El pueblo mantiene un carácter muy español y se considera el pueblo costero menos desarrollado de Tenerife. Las vistas del Atlántico son increíbles, y las calles adoquinadas son algo de magia.

Teide

Teide is a volcano that is also the highest mountain in Spain (3718 metres or 12,198 feet). It’s a decade volcano, which means it has quite the potential to destroy should it ever erupt again, and it is still considered active. This doesn’t stop it from attracting three million visitors every year! Teide es un volcán que también es el monte más alto de España (3718 metros). Es un volcán “decade”, que quiere decir que podría destruir todo si hiciera erupción otra vez y todavía se considera activo. ¡Eso no quiere decir que no atrae unos 3 millones de visitantes cada año!

Candelaria

Candelaria is a quaint village located on black-sand beaches about 17 kilometres (10 miles) south of Santa Cruz. The town has about 25,000 habitants and is home of an important basilica. As usual, the natural parts of the town are more impressive than the manmade ones. Candelaria es un pueblo pintoresco situado en playas de arena negra a 17 kilómetros sur de Santa Cruz. El pueblo tiene sobre 25,000 habitantes y cuenta con una basílica importante. Como siempre, la naturaleza del pueblo es más impresionante que los edificios.

La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the second largest city on Tenerife with 150, 661 residents and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. It has one of the best reputations in Spain and was a former capital of the island. The old town has many churches and beautiful buildings, and La Havana, Lima and San Juan used the city as an model when they were first settled. San Cristóbal de La Laguna es la segunda ciudad de la isla de Tenerife con 150.661 habitantes y ha sido Patrimonio de la Humanidad de UNESCO desde 1999. Tiene una de las mejores famas de España y erase una vez la capital de la isla. El Casco Antiguo tiene muchas iglesias y edificios bonitos. La Havana, Lima y San Juan miraron a La Laguna como modelo cuando empezaron a instalarse allí.

Plaza España (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)

The largest square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Canary Islands, Plaza de España is located in the centre of the city with a dramatic background of the Anaga Mountains. The lake is artificial, but the beauty is real. It was built in 1929. La plaza más grande de Santa Cruz de Tenerife y todas las Islas Canarias es la Plaza de España. Está ubicado en el centro de la ciudad con un fondo dramático de los montes de Anaga. El lago es artificial, pero su belleza es real. La construyó en 1929.

Masca (Yet to discover)

Located at the western part of the island, Masca is a popular and difficult hiking route that includes beautiful scenery, a beach and views of spectacular cliffs known as Los Gigantes. Without a car, it is pretty difficult to get to from Santa Cruz, so I saved it for my next trip. For more information, their tourism site is here. Situado en la parte oeste de la isla, Masca es una ruta popular y difícil de senderismo que incluye paisaje bonita, una playa y vistas de unos acantilados espectaculares conocidos como Los Gigantes. Sin coche, es bastante difícil llegar allí desde Santa Cruz, y por eso lo guardo para la próxima visita. Para más información, su página de turismo está aquí.

Dénia i la Cova Tallada

Arriving in Valencia, I knew I wanted to find a hiking group to join. I lucked out and found a gay hiking group, Samarucs, which also offers other sports like real football (soccer), swimming and volleyball. A few weeks ago, I had my first excursion with them, and I’m already looking forward to the next one. Cuando llegué en Valencia, sabía que quería encontrar un club de senderismo. Tenía suerte y encontré un grupo gay de senderismo, Samarucs, que también ofrece otros deportes como fútbol, natación y voleibol.

We left from Torres Quart. I was really nervous about meeting new people. I’m going to be honest. I had a panic attack. I had left my food at home too. Luckily, the guy whose car I rode in was nice and drove me to pick up my bocadillo and fruit. I calmed down some during the little-over-an-hour ride, but upon arriving to the meeting point, I got nervous again. I would be nervous most of the day. Quedamos en los Torres Quart. Estaba bastante nervioso de conocer gente nueva. Voy a ser sincero. Me pasó un ataque de pánico. Además, dejé mi bocadillo y fruta en casa también. Tenía suerte porque el chico que me llevó a Dénia era muy majo y paró a mi piso para que pudiera recoger la comida. Me tranquilice durante el viaje de una hora y pico hasta Dénia, pero cuando llegué al punto de encuentro, me puse nervioso otra vez. Estaba nervioso durante la gran parte del día.

Dénia is located at the point of the peninsula that sticks out the furthest in the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Alicante. It’s a small city of 41,672 residents, and it is also the port where the ferries to the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) leave from. We just drove through the city, and I made a mental note to return so I could go to the castle. Dénia está ubicado en la provincia de Alicante, en el punto de la península que se proyecta más en el mar Mediterráneo. Es una ciudad pequeña de 41.672 habitantes, y también sirve como el puerto donde los ferres salen para las Islas Baleares (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza y Formentera). No paramos en la ciudad, y tomé nota para volver para visitar el castillo.

What was ahead was even better than the city. A hike to the Cova Tallada, an incredible cave cut from the Mediterranean Sea water with crystal-clear waters for swimming. The hike from town took about 30 minutes or so, and many people were taking advantage of a beautiful late September day. The water was cool, but not cold enough to keep me from swimming. Lo que me esperaba era mejor que la ciudad. Una ruta hasta la Cova (Cueva) Tallada (Cortada), una cueva preciosa cortada del agua del mar con agua cristalina para bañarse. La ruta tardó unos 30 minutos, y había mucha gente aprovechando de un día estupendo de finales de septiembre. El agua estaba fresquita pero no demasiado fría para pararme de bañarme.

However, first we explored the cave, which meant using the flashlights/torches on our mobiles. This is where I hit my head. Ouch. Then came the swimming. I was going slow, more from my social anxiety than the bump on the head. The water was so clear you could see schools of fish swimming about. I started freaking out, as I am somewhat scared of things under the sea. My so-called intolerance to seafood and fish comes from this fear. Pero primero, explorarmos la cueva. Tuvimos que utilizar las linternas de nuestros móviles. Aquí es donde me dio un golpe en la cabeza. Vaya dolor. Después tocaba bañarme. Fui despacito, más por mi fobia social que el chichón en la cabeza. El agua era tan cristalina que pude ver grupos de peces nadando. Estaba flipando, como tengo un poco de miedo de cosas que vivan bajo del mar. Mi intolerancia a mariscos y pescado viene de este miedo.

I counted to 17 a few times (my magic number) and finally dived in. I didn’t notice the fish. The fish didn’t bite me or attack me. I didn’t see any jellyfish, either. Jellyfish give me the creeps like nothing else. I had fun swimming in the sea and overcoming a silly fear of fish. Conté a 17 unas veces (mi número magico) y por fin me bañé. No notaba los peces. No me mordieron ni me atacaron. Tampoco vi ninguna medusa, la cosa que me da más miedo. Lo pasé bien nadando en el mar y superando una fobia tonta de peces.

After swimming, we ate lunch on the hill above the cave. I began to feel better. After that, we returned but climbing a steep hill to Torre de Gerro, a tower built in the 16th century to defend the Valencian coast and is 132 metres (433 feet) above sea level. I fell on the rocks on the way there, and had I continued to fall, I would’ve had my life at risk. However, it was just a short stumble. Not even bleeding. After my second stumble of the day I was definitely opening up and laughing at myself and with others. Después de bañarnos, comemos en la colmina sobre la cueva. Me sentí mejor. Después, volvimos al pueblo pero por un monte con mucho pendiente hasta Torre de Gerro, un torre construido en el Siglo XVI para defender la costa valenciana. Es a 132 metros sobre el mar. Me caí en las rocas. Si siguiera cayéndome, me arriesgaría la vida. Sin embargo, solo era un tropezón. Ni me salió sangre.

We arrived back to the restaurant and spent some time getting to know each other a bit better. I think it’ll be a good group, and I hope I can overcome my social anxiety more for the next trip later this month! Llegamos al restaurante y hicimos sobremesa para conocernos mejor. Creo que será un buen grupo para mi, y espero superar mi fobia social más para el próximo viaje este mes.

I’ve stayed in a lot of places over the years, some of them good, some of them bad. I rarely take the time to do a shout out to them, but if they’re super good (or super bad, like a certain albergue in San Vicente de la Barquera), it’s worth the time to spread the word. Durante los años, me he alojado en varios sitios, algunos mejores que otros. No suelo escribir mucho sobre los sitios donde me duermo, pero si están super bien (o super malos, como un cierto albergue en San Vicente de la Barquera), vale la pena pasar el nombre de los sitios buenos.

Pensión Cejas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife welcomed me with the sort of hospitality I thought was gone in today’s world. I arrived to Santa Cruz quite tired from a 6:25 flight, and Carmen, the owner of the inn, was welcoming from the very beginning. She took the time to ask my interests and what attracted me to Tenerife. With her help, we devised a new and improved itinerary for my short visit to the island. Pensión Cejas en Santa Cruz de Tenerife me dieron un bienvenido que pensaba que ya no existía en el mundo de hoy en día. Llegué a Santa Cruz muy cansado después de un vuelo que salió a las 6.25. Carmen, la dueña de la pensión, era muy acogedora desde el principio. Tardó el tiempo para explicarme todo lo que había en Tenerife, escuchar que me interesaba y porque he venido a Tenerife. Con su ayuda, ya tenía un mejor itinerario durante mi visita corta a la isla.

The guesthouse is simple but nice. It has seven rooms and two showers (and a third toilet). The garden adds live to the patio. The guesthouse opened in the 1940s and was renovated in 2015. La pensión es simple pero bonito. Ofrece siete habitaciónes, dos duchas y otro aseo. El jardín da mucha vida al patio interior. La pensión abrió en los años 1940 y el año pasado lo restauraron.

It’s located about 5 minutes walking from the incredible Plaza España and 20 minutes from the bus depot. It’s not right quite in the centre of the actions, but very close to anything you ever need. Está ubicado a unos 5 minutos caminando desde la Plaza España increíble y a unos 20 minutos el intercambiador de guaguas (autobuses). No está en el centro de la ciudad pero está a lado y cerca a cualquier cosa que hace falta.

The best part is the hospitality of the owners. It was so nice to see that in 2016, people can still be so welcoming. Lo mejor es la hospitalidad de los dueños. Me alegro mucho ver que en 2016, la gente todavía sea tan acogedora.

Carmen was the one who recommended Anaga Experience to me, which again, since I’m someone who shies away from guided tours, I have to say was magnificent. Carmen me recomendó Anaga Experience, que, otra vez, como alguien que no le gusta mucho las visitas guiadas, tengo que decir que era genial.

The Anaga Mountains are located on the northeast point of Tenerife and were declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2015. In short, they are awesome. They were formed by a volcanic eruption between 7 and 9 million years ago and are the oldest part of the island. The highest point is Cruz de Taborno at 1024 metres (3,359 feet). Los montes de Anaga están situados en el punto más noreste de Tenerife y han sido una reserva biosfera desde 2015. Son geniales. Eran creados por una erupción volcánica hace unos 7-9 millones de años y forman la parte más antigua de la isla. El punto más alto es Cruz de Taborno con 1025 metros de altura.

Teide gets a lot of attention (and rightly so), but after a day full of tourists, I was hoping to find something different. The owner of the pensión I was staying at, Pensión Cejas, recommended a tour with Anaga Experience. I was in luck, as that Saturday there was a very special day planned, Anaga Viva, which would offer the best of three Anaga villages and festivities all day long. Teide recibe mucha atención (con razón), pero después de un día lleno de turistas, quería encontrar algo diferente. La dueña de la pensión donde me alojé, Pensión Cejas, me recomendó un guía de Anaga Experienca. Tenía suerte, como el sábado tenía un día especial planificado, Anaga Viva, que ofreció lo mejor de tres pueblos de Anaga y eventos especiales durante todo el día.

I met the guide, Aron, at 9 outside the hotel, and he introduced me to “barriquito”, the amazing coffee in Tenerife. Coffee, milk, condensed milk, cinnamon, maybe liqueur…Loralei Gilmore would be in heaven. His friends arrived, and we were off. Quedé con el guía, Aron, a las 9 en el hotel, y me mostró el barriquito, el café rico de Tenerife. Café, leche, leche condensada, canela, a veces licor. ¡A Loralei Gilmore le encantaría! Sus colegas llegó, y nos marchamos a Anaga.

Our first stop was Taborno, close to the famous Roque (rock) de Taborno. It was quite cloudy, normal in the Anaga mountains. Aron explained the history and took us for a hike around the Roque Taborno. I was mesmerized by the views. Later, back in Taborno, after sampling some Canarian wine, I saw a man walking his goat along with his dog. Why not? La primera parada era Taborno, cerca del famosa Roca de Taborno. Era bastante nublado, que es normal en Anaga. Aron me explicó la historia de Aanga y nos llevó por una ruta de Roque Taborno. Me fascinaron las vistas. Después, en Taborno, probé vino canario y vi un chico paseando su cabra con su perro. ¿Por qué no?

The next village, Chinamada, was having a cooking show, to which we arrived just as the downpour started. I got to sample the best of Canary cuisine (papas arrugadas, various fruits, vegetables and meats that I didn’t get to find out the name of). Then we got to see some Canary Island dances, while sampling more Canary Island wine, and I, of course, played with a cute dog. Había un concurso de cocina en el próximo pueblo, Chinamada. Llegamos justo antes de la diluvia. Probé lo mejor de la cocina canaria (papas arrugadas, frutas típicas, verduras y carnes que no me entraban sus nombres). Después, había bailes típicas de las Islas Canarias, y probamos más vino canario. Y yo, como siempre, jugué con un perro mono.

We caught the shuttle to the last village, Las Carboneras, at 2:30. There was supposed to be a concert, but with the earlier downpour, things got changed around. We hiked the tres kilometres or so back to Taborno, with more amazing scenery. What goes down must go up though, and there is a confusing fork in the road. We arrived to Taborno around 16:00, and then we went to have a Canary Island late lunch of more papas arrugadas and chicken fresh from the barbecue. One of the best meals ever. Cogimos el lanzadora al último pueblo por el día, Las Carboneras a las 14.30. Había un concierto planificado, pero con la diluvia de antes, las cosas cambiaron. Fuimos caminando unos tres kilómetros para volver a Taborno, con paisaje super bonito. Lo que baja tiene que subir, y hay una bifurcación confusa por el camino. Llegamos a Taborno sobre las 16.00, y después fuimos a comer una comida típica canaria de papas arrugadas y pollo de barbacoa. Uno de las mejores comidas que he probado.

Aron later stopped at the artificial beach (instead of black sand, like the majority of Canary Island beaches, Las Teresitas is made with sand from the Sahara) so I could see the beach of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (7 kilometres from the capital city). It had a 1950s vibe. I could imagine people here during the time of Franco. He later dropped me off at Pensión Cejas. Después, Aron paró en la playa artificial (en lugar de la arena negra típica de Tenerife, las Teresitas se hicieron con arena de la Sahara). Está a 7 kilómetros de la ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife y tiene un ambiente de los años 1950. Podría imaginar fácilmente la gente en esta playa durante la época de Franco. Después, me llevó hasta la puerta de Pensión Cejas.

I’ve mentioned on a few occasions I’m not really a tour kind of guy. I like going off on my own and exploring. For me to enjoy a tour like this as much as I did says a lot to how great Anaga Experience is. If you’re in Tenerife and are hoping to go to Teide, Anaga or Masca, look them up! Per a celebrar el dia de la Comunitat Valenciana, vull contestar una pregunta important.

És el valencià català?

Són el mateix. Si el castellà permite la gent de les Illes Canaries i Puerto Rico diu que un autobus es un guagua, doncs el valencià y el català són el mateix idióm. Però oi, el català no és valencià i el valencià no és català. Però sí, són el mateix!

Ara, a menjar paella!

Para celebrar el día de la Comunidad Valenciana, quiero contestar una pregunta importante.

¿Es el valenciano catalán?

Son lo mismo. Si el castellano permite los canarios y los puertorriqueños llamar a un autobús “guagua”, pues, el valenciano y el catalán son el mismo idioma. Pero cuidado. El catalán no es valenciano y el valenciano no es catalán. Pero sí, son lo mismo.

Ahora, ¡a comer paella!

To celebrate the day of the Valencian autonomous community, I wanted to answer an important question.

Is Valencian Catalan?

They are the same language. If Spanish allows for the Canarians and the Puerto Ricans to refer to a bus as a “guagua”, then Valencian and Catalan are the same language. Be careful, though. Catalan is not Valencian and Valencian is not Catalan. However, they are the same.

Now, to eat paella!

Teide, Spain’s highest peak.

Spain’s highest mountain isn’t located in the Greatest Peninsula in the World. It’s actually located off the coast of Africa, 2000 kilometres from my home in Valencia. Mount Teide is 3718 metres (12,198 feet) tall and is considered an active volcano whose last eruption was in 1909 at the El Chinyero vent. It’s also a decade volcano due to its history of disruptive eruptions and proximity to populations such as Garachico and Puerto de la Cruz. El monte más alto de España no está ubicado en La Mejor Península del Mundo. Está ubicado cerca de la costa de África, a 2000 kilometros de mi casa en Valencia. Monte Teide es 3718 metros de altura y se considera un volcán activo. Su última erupción era en 1909 en El Chinyero. También se considera un “decade volcano” por su historia de erupciones explosivas y proximidad a poblaciones como Garachico y Puerto de la Cruz.

The nature park Teide gives its name to was high on my list of priorities for Tenerife, and on Friday, 16 September, I woke up to early to catch the 8:00 direct bus to Puerto de la Cruz so I could catch the 9.15 bus from Puerto de la Cruz to Teide. La Parque Nacional de Teide era número uno en las cosas que quería ver en Tenerife, y el viernes, 16 de septiembre, me desperté pronto para coger el guagua/autobús directo a Puerto de la Cruz para coger otro guagua/autobús a las 9.15 que me llevó desde Puerto de la Cruz hasta Teide.

The second bus ride was rough, going up winding roads on the volcano. I remembered my visits to the Big Island of Hawaii and Kilauea, although the volcanos are different. It took a little over an hour to reach the teleférico (cable car) that goes close to the summit. It costs 27€ return/round trip. Since I was reliant on the bus, I reluctantly paid it instead of hiking. If you look in advance, there are 200 daily permits issued to climb to the very top. Be sure to look more than a week in advance, which is what I did, and I was out of luck. No permit for me! El viaje en el segundo guagua/autobús era duro porque subió carreteras sinuosas del volcán. Me acordé de mis visitas a la Isla Grande de Hawaii y Kilauea, aunque los volcanes son diferentes. Tardó un poco más de una hora para llegar al teleférico que va casi hasta el cime. Un billete de ida/vuelta cuesta 27€. Como tenía que ir por autobús/guaguau, lo pagué en lugar de ir caminando. Si buscas con antelación, hay 200 permisos cada día para subir hasta el cima. Pero hay que buscar con más de una semana de antelación, como lo hice yo, y no tenía suerte. ¡No permiso para mi!

I did buy the ticket online so I would avoid the queues. I still had to wait a bit (my scheduled time was 11:20. I went up in the 11:40 teleférico.) Compré el billete de teleférico por internet para evitar las colas. Todavía tenía que esperar un rato (tenía un billete para las 11.20. Subí en el teleférico de 11.40).

There are other trails that lead from the upper part of the cable car. I walked awhile along number 12 and Pico Viejo. I didn’t go far, as the altitude was getting to me. The rest of the island was having a cloudy day, but Teide stopped the clouds. Being close to the equator and being so high meant that despite the wind, despite my Barcelona hoodie, despite my 30 proof sunscreen (50 proof for my face), I was getting red. I was hot and cold at the same time. Hay más senderos a la parte de arriba del teleférico. Caminé por los dos (#12 y Pico Viejo), aunque no caminé muy lejos como el altitud estaba afectándome. El resto de la isla estaba nublado, pero Teide paró los nubes. Estar cerca del ecuador y estar tan alto significa que aunque fui vestido en mi sudadera del Barça, que me puse crema solar de 30 y 50 por la cara, estaba poniéndome rojo. Tenía calor y frío a la misma vez.

I did manage an hour walking around these trails and admiring the fantastic views. Todavía caminé sobre una hora por estos senderas y disfrutando de las vistas fantásticas.

I grabbed an expensive bocadillo de jamón serrano, thankful my water bottle was still half full (or half empty, but let’s think positive!). (Be warned. Food is super expensive there. I overheard Brits, who are more used to higher prices than the Spanish, complaining about the inflated prices.) before heading on a hiking path to the parador, which took about an hour. I was feeling better and more adjusted to the altitude, but it also wasn’t as high, so more oxygen was getting to me. Para comer, me compré un bocadilo de jamón muy caro y estaba agradecido que mi botella de agua sigió medio lleno (o medio vació, pero ¡pensamos en positivo! He de avisaros. Comida en general es super caro allí. He escuchado británicos quejándose de los precios, y ellos están más acostumbrados a precios altos que los españoles. Después, cogí un sendero hasta el parador, que tardó sobre una hora. Ya me sentí mejor y estaba acostumbrándome a la altitud. Tampoco era tan alto, y había más oxigeno.

I love going to Paradores, which are old castles/buildings converted into fancy hotels. One day I will stay at one. Here, I just had a relaxing café con leche for 1.95€ (it was 3€ from the machine at the teleférico) and wrote in my travel journal. The bus back to Puerto de la Cruz was a nightmare as fog rolled in and the twists and turns got to me. Me encanta visitar los Paradores, que son castillos o edificios antiguos que se han convertido a hoteles con estilo. Un día me alojaré en uno. Aquí, me tomé un relaxing café con leche por sólo 1,95 (costó 3€ de la máquina del teleférico) y escribí en mi diario de viajes. El autobús/guagua a Puerto de la Cruz era una pesadilla auténtica como había niebla y la carretera sinuosa me afectó.

I went straight back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife to rest after an amazing day. Volví a Santa Cruz de Tenerife después de un día genial.

I finally made it. And after a long three years, I finally crossed off another Spanish province off my list, meaning I only have Ourense, Lugo, Zamora, Huesca and Albacete left to visit. Once I visit those provinces, I will have visited all 50 provinces in Spain. Por fin, lo he conseguido. Y después de tres años largos, por fin he tachado otra provincia española, que significa que solo me queda Ourense, Lugo, Zamora, Huesca y Albacete para visitar. Después de visitarlas, ya habrá visitado todas las 50 provincias españolas.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, I caught a bus from Valencia to Barcelona. I had gotten a Ryan Air flight from Barcelona so I could cheaply fly to the north part of Tenerife, which interested me much more than the south full of beaches and tourists. It was actually cheaper, even with a night in Barcelona, to do that than fly Valencia to Tenerife North. Gotta love the airlines. Miércoles, el 14 de septiembre. Cogí un autobús de Valencia a Barcelona. He comprado un vuelo de Ryan Air desde Barcelona para poder volar barato a la parte norte de Tenerife, que me interesaba mucho más que la parte sur llena de playas y turistas. Era más barato, incluso con alojamiento en Barcelona, para hacer eso que volar desde Valencia a Tenerife Norte. Las compañías de avión. Que especiales son.

A night in Barcelona is always welcome, but too early on Thursday morning I made my way to El Prat to catch a 6: 25 a.m. flight. No incident, and I slept the entire flight. It was cold at Tenerife Norte, but the bus arrived after about 10 minutes to take me to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Una noche en Barcelona siempre está bienvenida, pero demasiado pronto por la madrugada el jueves tenía que ir a Barcelona Prat para coger un vuelo. Salió a las 6.25. Fui sin incidente, y dormí todo el vuelo. Hizo frío en Tenerife Norte, pero el autobús llegó después de unos 10 minutos para llevarme a Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The capital city of Tenerife, Sta. Cruz de Tenerife, has a population of 206, 593 people (as of 2013), and is located at the south of the north coast. It’s most famous for its Carnival, which the government is pushing to make a UNESCO World Heritage site. Only the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is bigger. I had breakfast before heading to my pensión, Pensión Cejas (I am going to write more in depth about it later) to leave off my bags so I could explore easier. La capital de Tenerife, Sta. Cruz de Tenerife, tiene una población de 206.593 personas (2013) y está situado el sur de la costa norte. La ciudad es más conocida por sus Carnivales, que el gobierno quiere hacer Patrimonio de la Humanidad de UNESCO. Sólo los Carnivales de Rio son más grandes. Desayuné antes de ir a la Pensión Cejas, donde iba a dormir. Ya saldrá otra entrada sobre la Pensión Cejas.

The city is fantastic and not so touristy in the month of September. My favourite place was Plaza de España, which might be my favourite Plaza de España in the entire country. Another highlight was the Auditorio de Tenerife, designed by Calatrava and resembling the Sydney Opera House. La ciudad es fantástica y no tan turística en el mes de septiembre. Mi sitio preferido era la Plaza de España, que creo que es mi Plaza de España en todo de España. Otro sitio que me encantó era el Auditorio de Tenerife, que fue diseñado por Calatrava y es parecido a la Opera House de Sydney.

Thursday afternoon, I went to La Laguna by tram. San Cristóbal de La Laguna, population 150, 661, is considered the cultural capital of Canary Islands and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. I fell in love with the city. The clouds were quite grey, and a few drops of rain fell on me while there, but it didn’t spoil my time there at all. It was a bit chillier due to its higher altitude. Jueves por la tarde, fui a La Laguna por tranvía. San Cristóbal de La Laguna, población 150.661, se considera la capital cultural de las Islas Canarias y ha sido Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1999. Me encantó la ciudad. Los nubes eran bastante grises, y unas gotas de lluvia me cayeron cuando estaba allí, pero todavía me lo pasé bien allí. También hizo más fresquito allí por la altitud.

Friday was the big day. I visited the highest mountain in Spain, the active volcano Teide. At 3718 metres/12,198 feet, Teide rises high above the rest of the island. The volcano last erupted in 1909 and is a decade volcano and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s Spain’s most visited natural wonder and Europe’s most visited national park with 3 million annual visitors. I will dedicate a full entry to Teide as it so rightly deserves. Viernes era el día. Visité el monte más alta de España, el volcán activo Teide. Con sus 3718 metros, Teide domina la isla. La última erupción fue en 1909 y es un “volcán decada” y Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Es la maravilla natural más visitada de España y el parque nacional de Europa más visitado con 3 millones de visitantes cada año. Ya escribiré una entrada sobre Teide como lo merece.

Saturday was another big day (and yes, another full entry to come.) I bit the bullet and went on a tour to the Anaga Mountains close to Santa Cruz. The Anagas were every bit as impressive as the more famous Teide. The northeast part of Tenerife is the oldest part of the island and a highlight of a trip there, at least to me. Anaga became a Biosphere Reserve in 2015. El sábado era otro día grande (y sí, otra entrada para escribir). Fui con un guía a los montes Anaga cerca de Sta. Cruz. Las Anagas era tan impresionantes como el Teide que es más famoso. El noreste de Tenerife es la parte más vieja de la isla y una de las partes más memorables de mi viaje. Anaga ha sido una reserva biosfera desde 2015.

Sunday I slept in a bit and caught a bus to Puerto de la Cruz to transfer to a bus to a small village, Garachico, population 5416, located 52 kilometres west of Santa Cruz (32 miles). The town, although attractive to tourists for its beautiful views and cobblestone streets, is very Spanish. The beaches are more volcanic debris and black sand than actual beaches, although there are a variety of natural pools from the Atlantic and a man-made swimming pool next to the ocean. The grey skies seemed to enhance the beauty and not detract.

Por fin, el domingo no tenía que madrugar. Cogí un autobús a Puerto de la Cruz para coger otro bus a un pueblo, Garachico, población 5416, ubicado a 52 kilómetros de Santa Cruz. El pueblo, aunque atractivo para los turistas por sus vistas bonitas y calles adoquinadas, es muy español. Las playas son mejor dicho detritos volcánicos que playas reales, aunque hay piscinas naturales desde el Atlántico y una piscina humana a lado del océano. Los nubes han mejorado las vistas en mi opinión.

Monday was my last day, and after a long walk by the port, I caught the bus to the airport early to give me time to stop in one last village, Candelaria. Another beautiful village, and this time I was able to read a bit on the black-sand beach. Candelaria has a population of 25,140 (2010 figures) and is located 17 km (10 miles) south of Santa Cruz. The Virgin of Candelaria is the patron saint of the Canary Islands, and the Basilica is quite beautiful. While I was there, the town was experiencing a planned power outage, which meant most things were closed. I made the best of the situation. El lunes fue el último día, y después de un paseo por el puerto, cogí el autobus al aeropuerto pronto para tener tiempo de parar en un último pueblo, Candelaria. Otro pueblo bonito, y esta vez me dio tiempo (de reloj y de clima) leer en una playa de arena negra. Candelaria tiene una población de 25.140 (2010) y está ubicado a 17 kilómetros de Santa Cruz. La Virgen de Candelaria es la patrón de las Islas Canarias, y su Basílica es preciosa. Cuando estaba allí, se cortó la luz, y casi todas las tiendas y los bares estaban cerrados. Hice vodka limones de los limones y disfruté lo que pude.

While in the Canaries, I did try some of the typical food like papas arrugadas, which are like small, bite-sized baked potatoes with dipping sauce, arapas, a pita-bread like treat with meat inside and barriquito, a condensed milk, cinnamon, coffee and milk (and sometimes liqueur) treat. I never thought I would find a coffee that I liked better than my precious café con leche, but I did! Cuando estaba en las Canarias, probé la comida típica como papas arrugadas, o pequeñas patatas asadas con salsa, arapas, que son pan pita con carne y barriquito, un café con leche condensada, candela, y leche (y a veces licor). Nunca pensaba que iba a encontrar un café que me gusta más que mi café con leche, pero el barriquito está muy rico!

All in all, Tenerife was every bit as amazing as I hoped it would be. I know I need another trip there to see everything I wanted to see, but these five days were quite amazing and I am blessed to have had them. In the coming days, I’ll be writing about the excursions to Teide and Anaga, the amazing pensión I stayed at, and, of course, the SetMeravelles of Tenerife! Stay tuned! Sé que me hace falta otro viaje allí para ver todo que quiero ver, pero los cinco días que pasaba allí eran geniales y he tenido suerte para poder ir a Tenerife.
