The first time I had heard of Llanes, I was teaching a First Certificate Cambridge Exam class to other teachers. On the tape recording, I thought they said “Janice”, like Chandler’s annoying on-again, off-again girlfriend on Friends. The class told me it was a beautiful town. For that reason, I planned a short day from Pendueles to Llanes so I could walk around the town a bit and enjoy its beauty. La primera vez que escuché el nombre del pueblo “Llanes”, estaba dando una clase de First Certificate (Cambridge) a otros profesores. En la grabación, pensaba que dijo “Janice”, como la ex-novia pesada de Chandler en Friends. La clase me informó que era un pueblo bonito en Asturias. Por eso, hice planes para un día corto desde Pendueles a Llanes para poder explorar el pueblo y disfrutar de su belleza. 

This meant I could actually sit down and enjoy the breakfast (toast and café con leche) the hospitalero in Aves de Paso in Pendueles had prepared for us. We had to be out by 8:00, so I had a coffee to rest a bit more before leaving Pendueles. Ese significaba que tenía tiempo para desayunar tranquilamente (tostada y café con leche) el hospitalero de Aves de Paso en Pendueles nos había preparado. Teníamos que marcharnos antes de las 8.00, y me tomé otro café para descansar un rato antes de salir de Pendeueles. 

There was a cute dog (mostly German Shepherd) keeping vigile on top of a wall next to the albergue. I loved the dogs I came across on the Camino (I’m totally Team Dogs Rule, Cats Drool). Había un perro mono (creo que pastor alemán) vigilando desde arriba de una muralla a lado del albergue. Me encantaron los perros que crucé por el Camino. Soy Equipo Perros son los mejores, los gatos babean. 

I opted for the E9 path that went along the coast. It meant a few extra kilometres, but I had a short day. I stopped at a beach for a few minutes near Camping La Paz outside Pendueles, Playa de Vidiago. A few kilometres later, I learned a new Spanish word, “bufón”, which is a blowhole. The water wasn’t too active, and it was a lot more sound than actual water passing through. It was still a great place to stop for a while. I ran into the French guy and the madrileña from the albergue there, as we were the last ones. Later, I ran into the Hungarian woman again and talked to her a bit. We all wanted to stay but we needed to continue with the day’s hike. Fui por la alternativa del sendero E9 que va por la costa. Eran unos kilómetros de más, pero tenía un día corto planificado. Paré en una playa durante unos minutos cerca de Camping La Paz cerca de Pendueles, Playa de Vidiago. Unos kilómetros después, aprendí una palabra nueva de castellano, “bufón”. El agua estaba tranquilo, y escuché más ruido que vi olas pasando por los bufones. Era un sitio genial para parar un rato. Vi al frances y a la madrileña del albergue el día anterior, como éramos los últimos de salir. Después, vi la mujer de Hungaria otra vez y charlé con ella un rato. Queremos quedarnos más tiempo allí, pero tuvimos que seguir adelante. 

The E9 path was all path walking, which was a welcome break from the road. I stopped in Andrín for another café con leche and ran into the German peregrinos and talked to them a bit, advising them what to see in Bilbao. La ruta E9 va todo por sendero, no carretera, que era un respiro bienvenido de la carretera. Paré otra vez en Andrín por otro café y vi los peregrinos alemanes. Hablé con ellos un rato, dando consejo en lo que hay de ver en Bilbao. 

It was the last time I saw any of them. I’m still sad about that. That’s the Camino though. People come in and out your life at the drop of a hat. Era la última vez que vi cualquier de ellos. Todavía estoy un poco triste sobre ello, pero es la manera del Camino. La gente entra y sale de la vida sin aviso. 

It was a walk uphill for a bit, and then rewarded with the coast and views of the Picos de Europa until I arrived to Llanes. It seemed to take forever. The views were awesome though. Había cuesta arriba durante un rato, que daba premio con vistas de la costa y vistas de los Picos de Europa, hasta que llegué en Llanes. 

The district of Llanes has about 13,000 people, whereas the village itself has about 4000. Most of the tourists were Spanish or peregrinos. The region has a lot of mountains, caves and beaches. The Paseo de San Pedro has views of the coastal cliffs, part of the old town wall exists, and the port is home to Los cubos de Memoria, (The Cubes of Memory), painted concrete blocks from the Basque painter Augustín Ibarrola (who also painted the Bosque de Oma). El districo de Llanes cuenta con sobre 13.000 habitantes, y el pueblo tiene 40000. La mayoría de turistas eran españoles o peregrinos. La región tiene muchos montes, cuevas y playas. El Paseo de San Pedro ofrece vistas de los acantilados, todavía hay parte de la muralla antigua, y en el puerto se encuentra Los Cubos de Memoria, un obra de arte del pintor vasco Augustín Ibarrola y son bloques de concreto pintados. 

The albergue was wonderful. The hospitaleros of La Casona del Peregrino were super friendly and helpful, and I am so taking them up on their offer of free room and board while I teach them English next summer! It was well worth the 15€, as they washed clothes for me and the rooms were nice. The toilets and showers were co-ed, but as I was the first to arrive, it wasn’t a problem for me. That’s the only downside about the place. They even had a picnic breakfast ready for me as I wanted to get an early start the following morning. El albergue fue maravilloso. Los hospitaleros de La Casona del Peregrino eran acogedores y me ayudaron un montón. Voy a aprovechar de su oferta de casa para enseñarles inglés el verano que viene. Vale los 15€. Me lavaron la ropa, y las habitaciones estaban bien. Los baños y las duchas eran para ambos sexos, pero como era el primero de llegar, no había un problema para mi. Era el único mal del sitio. Incluso tenían preparado un desayuno picnic para los peregrinos como yo que salen antes de las 8.00 en la mañana. 

For lunch,I had fabada, the typical Asturian dish, and at dinner had another one, chorizo a la sidra, cider being the most typical drink of Asturias. I walked around the beach, allowing the ocean to do its magical job of healing sore muscles, and enjoyed seeing Barcelona beat Betis to start the Spanish Liga (now Liga Santander instead of BBVA) at a local bar. I met up with the friend I had met in San Vicente de la Barquera, the riojano, and chatted a bit with him as he stopped in Llanes but was continuing on. He noted that I was “very tired.” Para comer, probé fabada, el plato más típico de Asturias, y para cenar, probé otro plato típico, chorizo a la sidra. La sidra es la bebida más conocida de Asturias. Paseé por la playa, dejando el mar hacer su trabajo en los músculos cansados. Disfruté de ver Barcelona ganó contra Betis para empezar la Liga Española, ahora la Liga Santander en lugar de la Liga BBVA en un bar. Quedé con el amigo que conocí en San Vicente de la Barquera de La Rioja, y charlé con él un rato mientras él descansaba en Llanes. El sigió al próximo pueblo y me dijo que me vio bastante cansado.

I was. Estaba muy cansado.

It didn’t stop me at all from exploring every inch of the town. No me paró de explorar el pueblo.

I barely saw the people in the room with me, but they seemed to be party girls and came in late. I didn’t feel too bad about my early departure. The albergue was for peregrinos only, but that doesn’t mean peregrinos don’t party on a Saturday night! Apenas vi las otras personas con quien compartieron la habitación conmigo, pero me parecieron ser chicas de fiesta y llegaron muy tarde. No me sabía muy mal de mi salida pronto el próximo día. El albergue era solo para peregrinos, pero no quiere decir que no hay peregrinos que salen de fiesta en sábado. 

I, however, am not a party peregrino and needed my sleep. Sin embargo, no soy un peregrino fiestero y necesitaba dormir. 

The next two days were going to be long ones. Los próximos días iban a ser largos.
