One of the characters in Mi gran noche, the  2015 film from Basque director Álex de la Iglesias, said it best. “¿Qué coño está pasando aquí?” (What the **** is going on here?). Un personaje de Mi gran noche, la película del directo vasco Álex de la Iglesia del año 2015, lo dijo mejor: ¿Qué coño está pasando aquí?

The film has a huge cast and a complex story within the simple premise: During riots in Madrid, the rich and famous are trying to film the New Year’s Eve Special. The film is a satire of the Spanish financial crisis, the corrupt Spanish politicians, Spanish society today, and all those  recent romantic comedies trying to be (and failing miserably) Love Actually. It is probably what Pedro Almodóvar was hoping to accomplish with Los amantes pasajeros, and there are even some homages to it (notably the presence of actor Hugo Silva.) La película tiene un gran reparto grande y una historia complejo dentro del argumento principal: Durante un disturbio gordo en Madrid, los ricos y famosos quieren grabar el especial del Noche Vieja. La película es una sátira de la crisis económica sin fin, los políticos españoles corruptos, la sociedad española hoy en día y todos las comedias románticas que quieren ser (y no llegan a ser) Love Actually. Puede ser lo que Pedro Almodóvar quería hacer con Los amantes pasajeros, y hay unos homenajes a esa película, incluso la presencia del actor Hugo Silva. 

Like the infamous Friends episode “The One with the Routine”, they are filming the party scenes for the big New Year’s Eve celebration (although there are surprisingly no grapes. For such a Spanish tradition, it was glaringly missing) weeks in advance. When a crane falls on someone at a table, they need new people to stand in as party goers. They are upset they can’t get wifi access. Como la capítulo de Friends “The One with the Routine (El con la rutina)”, están rodando las escenas de fiestas para Noche Vieja con mucha antelación, aunque no hay uvas. Para una tradición española tan importante, la película hacía falta uvas. Cuando un grúa se cae en alguien durante la cena, necesitan más gente para hacer el papel de fiesteros. Están cabreados porque no hay wifi. 

A plot to kill the star of the special, Alphonso (a satire of Spanish singer Raphael, played by Raphael himself), is soon revealed. Adanne (Mario Casas) just wants the main part, although he’s not a part of the plan. Hay un plan para asesinar la estrella de la especial, Alphonso (una sátira del cantante Raphael quien interpreta el papel). Adanne quiere ser el único famoso (pero no forma parte del plan).

A mother sets the house on fire and needs to be taken by the police to her son, who is trying his best to work as a party goer. Una madre empieza un incendio en casa y la policía le lleva a la fiesta para estar con su hijo, quien está trabajando duro como un fiestero. 

The hosts of the program are a couple in real life but also hate each other. Los prestentadores eon pareja en la vida real pero se odian y discuten de todo. 

The lesbian producers just want everything to be perfect. Las productoras lesbianas quieren que todo sea perfecto. 

Women are fighting for the semen sample of Adanne. Hay mujeres peleando para el semen de Adanne. 

A riot explodes outside the filming of the program, which has been going on for weeks without end, wanting the head of the network to resign. Hay un disturbio fuera del edificio donde están grabando el programa para que dimite el jefe del canal. Han estado de rodaje durante semanas ya.

AND THERE IS NO WIFI IN THE BUILDING. Y NO HAY WIFI. 

The film is pretty darn complicated with all these plots and characters, but Álex de la Iglesia manages to make one of his better films. The satire of the state of things in Spain is fantastic. Let’s keep up appearances and go on with the show. Everything is fine. Really. Just ignore all the corruption of the politicians and the crisis that will never end. As long as we have wifi, it’ll be okay. Who needs to know what’s happening behind the scenes? La película es bastante complicado con todos sus argumentos y personajes, pero es una de las mejores películas del director vasco. La sátira del estado de cosas en España es fantástica. Todo está bien, vamos con el show. Todo está bien. De verdad. Ignora todo los políticos corruptos y la crisis sin fin. Si tenemos wifi, todo saldrá bien. ¿Quién necesita saber lo que está pasando de verdad? 

The symbiotic excess is toned down a bit (but still present) in exchange for another biting commentary on the voyeuristic society. Unfortunately, a lot of the funnier aspects will be lost in translation for those unfamiliar with the day-to-day life in Spain and those damn New Year’s Eve specials. El “symbiotic excess”es algo más tranquilizado en la película (pero claro que hay, es Álex de la Iglesia) para ofrecernos un buen comentario en la sociedad de voyeristas. Es una pena que la mayoría de los aspectos más graciosos van a ser perdidos en traducción para los que no saben la vida de España hoy en día ni los especiales del Noche Vieja.
