Vizcaya has a painted forest. Hay un bosque pintado en Vizcaya. 

The Bosque de Oma, located near the village of Kortezubi (population 412), which itself is near Gernika, is a work of land art from Basque Artist Agustín Ibarrola. Patined on the trunks of Monterrey Pines, the works took three years for Ibarrola to complete, from 1982-1985. The art represents the relationship between nature and human presence. Depending on where you are standing, the works appear differently. El Bosque de Oma, ubicado cerca del pueblo de Kortezubi (población 412), cerca de Gernika, es una obra de “land art” (arte de tierra) del artista vasco Agustín Ibarrola. Pintado en los troncos de pinos Monterrey, las obras tardaron unos tres años para completar, desde 1982-1985. El arte representa la relación entre naturaleza y la presencia humana. Depende en donde estás, las obras aparecen distintas. 

On a trip to the Basque Country in 2012, before living in Bilbao, capital of the world, a friend took me to the forest on a very rainy day. My shoes were muddy and the umbrella only did so much from protecting me from the Basque rain. I only saw a bit of the forest as we just wanted to go back to the car, and the parking lot/car park is a good 45 minute walk from the paintings. Durante un viaje al País vasco en 2012, antes de vivir en Bilbao, la capital del mundo, un amigo me llevó al bosque un día bastante lluvioso. Mis zapatos tenía barro después y el paraguas no hizo su trabajo en proteger me de la lluvía vasca. Solo vi un poco del bosque porque queremos volver al coche, y el parking está a 45 minutos andando de las obras. 

I wanted to return to this forest on a sunny day and take my time exploring it. On Monday, June 20, 2016, I seized my opportunity. I caught the 3513 BizkaiBus line from Bilbao’s Termibus on a sunny morning. The bus goes the long way between Bilbao and Leikeitio, linking various villages, and it only leaves every two hours. (It is the same bus that is turned in Elantxobe by the pavement). Quería volver al bosque un día asoleado para explorarlo más. El lunes, 20 de junio 2016, aproveché. Cogí el 3513 BizkaiBus de Termibus de Bilbao. El autobús para en todos los pueblos entre Bilbao y Leikeitio, y solo hay uno cada dos horas. (Es el mismo autobús que tiene el pavimento darlo la vuelta). 

An hour and 10 minutes later, I arrived in Kortezubi. “Pueblo” in Spanish means village but also applys to small towns. This was a village if not a hamlet (aldea in Spanish). There was a nice church, but I didn’t see any cafés open. I turned on the GPS for backup and was at the Bosque de Oma entrance a half hour later (where there was a taverna open for that café con leche.) Una hora y 10 minutos después, llegué a Kortezubi. Ese sí era un pueblo si no aldea. Había una iglesia bonita, pero no vi ningún café. Encendí el GPS del móvil y llegué a la entrada del Bosque de Oma una media hora después (donde había una taverna abierta para tomarme mi café con leche.)

Next to the parking lot for Bosque de Oma is the Santimamiñe Cave, which has cave paintings. It was closed on Monday, and there was a huge bus of children arriving, so I hastened my pace to hit the trail to the forest. A lado del parking de Bosque de Oma es La Cueva de Santimamiñe, que tiene dibujos. Estaba cerrado porque era lunes, y había un autobús lleno de niños chillando. Por eso, caminé rápidamente para llegar al sendero que me llevó al bosque. 

It was a much more enjoyable hike in the sun than the rain, and I can see how much better I am at hiking now than I was 4 years ago. (It was at the beginning of my hiking interest.) I was there in 30 minutes, I think. Disfruta la ruta más en el sol que la lluvía, y me noté que lo hice mucho mejor que hace 4 años. (Fui cuando estaba empezando a hacer senderismo). 

The paintings were interesting. I don’t know a lot about art, so I can’t really tell you much about them despite standing on the numbers to see them. The other school group there was giving the guide in Basque, so I couldn’t even take advantage of listening in to learn more about the paintings. Ah well. Las obras eran interesantes. No soy de arte, y por eso no puedo deciros más sobre ellos aunque fui a todos los numéros para verlas. La otra excursión de colegio estaba haciendo un guía en euskera, y no pude aprovechar escuchar la guía para aprender más sobre el bosque. 

After exploring the paintings, I returned and took the trail to Gernika, thanks to BiendeAltura. I was able to follow this trail thanks to my backup GPS on my mobile. A few trees had fallen in some storm which blocked the path, but I was able to find a quick way around them. Después de ver las obras de arte, volví para hacer la ruta a Gernika, gracias a BiendeAltura. Podía seguir este sendero gracias al GPS del móvil. Unos árboles se han caído que bloquearon la ruta, pero había un atajo para evitarlos. 

There was an interesting ermita (hermitage) called San Lorenzo along the way. It was an hour or so back to Gernika through the forest and mountain. It’s a shame the Camino de Santiago del Norte didn’t go along this route, but then again, the pilgrim traffic could upset the art somehow too. Había una ermita interesante, San Lorenzo, por el camino. Me tardó una hora y pico para llegar a Gernika, caminando por bosque y monte. Es una pena que el Camino del Norte no va por esta ruta, pero quizás el tráfico de peregrinos podía disturbar el arte. 

It was quite a nice morning hike and a good way to spend my last Monday in Bizkaia. Era un buena ruta y una buena manera para pasar mi último lunes en Bizkaia.
