Wait, what? De la Iglesia directs a straight up murder mystery thriller with twists and turns, all in English. Are we sure this is the same director? The on-screen murders are even tame for the Basque director. How does this transition work? Espera…¿qué? De la Iglesia hace una pelí de crímenes, un thriller con sorpresas, todo en inglés. ¿Estámos seguros que es el mismo director? Los asesinos son suaves para el director vasco. 

Elijah Wood is Martin, an American Ph.D student starting research at Oxford. He dreams of working with Professor Arthur Seldom (John Hurt), and he attempts to ask a difficult question in class. Seldom scoffs, but the two cross paths again when Seldom’s colleague and Martin’s landlady is unexpectedly murdered and they discover the body together. This draws them into a complex mystery and police investigation. Can they discover who the murderer is before another murder takes place? Elijah Wood protagoniza Martin, un candidato de doctorado estadounidense que viene a Oxford para hacer investigación. Su sueño es colaborar con el profesor Arthur Seldom (John Hurt), y intenta hacer una pregunta difícil en clase. Seldom se ríe pero sus destinos cruzan otra vez cuando una colega de Seldom y la casera de Martin se muere de un asesinato y descubren el cuerpo juntos. Después, se encuentran en el misterio complejo y la investigación de policia. ¿Pueden descubrir quien es el asesino antes de otro asesinato?

The film is sometimes laughable, which is par for course for the genre. The mathematics involved went over my head (I studied humanities (Spanish and journalism) though.) It tries to bring something new by adding in logic and math to the murders, but it fell flat. Still, I didn’t figure out who the culprit was and it kept me guessing. I also have to say that Martin’s girlfriend Lorna (Leonor Watling) was a breath of fresh air. A veces hay que burlarse de la película, que suelo hacer con este género. Las matemáticas eran más que yo sabía (soy de humanidades, filología española y periodismo). Intentó hacer algo nuevo con lógica y mates con los asesinatos, pero no funciona bien. Pero bueno, no sabía quien era el asesino hasta el final. También he de decir que Leonor Watling como la novia de Martin era una de las mejores partes de la película. 

It’s good to break from form for any artistic person and to try new things. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. It could’ve been a lot worse. It could’ve been better too. I kept looking for something to make this film uniquely Álex de la Iglesia, but I couldn’t find it. Siempre está bien para cualquier persona artista hacer algo nuevo. A veces funciona bien, a veces no. Podría ser peor, podría ser mejor. Estaba buscando algún aspecto de la película que dice que sí, es Álex de la Iglesia, pero no pude encontrar ni uno. 

Gael García Bernal, one of my fave actors, and Michael Caine were originally considered for the parts that went to Wood and Hurt. Originalmente, Gael García Bernal, quien es uno de mis actores preferidos, y Michael Caine fueron considerados para interpretar los protagonistas. 

The film was released in 2008 in Spain and the U.K., but it wasn’t until 2010 when it reached the other side of the pond where it inevitably bombed, receiving some of the worst reviews of the director’s career. La película estreñó en 2008 en España y el Reino Unido, pero no estrenó hasta 2010 en el otro lado del charco, donde fracasó bastante. Recibió algunos de los peores críticos de la carrera del director. 

Obviously they haven’t seen Muertos de Risa. Es obvio que no vieran Muertos de Risa.
