La Comunidad (Common Wealth), directed by Basque director Álex de la Iglesia, is a dark comedy that shows the lengths people will go to for a little bit of money. La comunidad, dirigida por Álex de la Iglesia, es una comedia negra que muestra la desesperación de la gente para tener un poco de dinero. 

The film features the always exquisite Chica Almodóvar Carmen Maura, who should be a Bien de Interés Cultural. She plays Julia, a real estate agent who stumbles upon the perfect flat to sell and decides to make house there as she tries to sell it. When the roof above starts to cave in due to cockroaches, she calls the police. They discover an old, eccentric man has died there many weeks before. After further investigation, Julia discovers that the old man had buried 300 million pesetas underneath the floor boards. La película tiene la siempre exquisita Chica Almodóvar Carmen Maura, que ya debería ser un Bien de Interés Cultural. Interpreta Julia, una agente de inmobilaria que encuentra el piso perfecto que se vende y decide hacer la casa su casa mientras intenta venderla. Cuando el techo empieza a caer dado a los cucarachas, llama a la policia. Descubren el cadáver de un señor mayor excéntrico quien se murió hace semanas. Después de más investigación, Julia descubre que el señor escondió 300 millones de pesetas debajo de las baldosas de suelo. 

The problem is, the rest of the apartment community (For those not familiar in Spain, “La Comunidad” of neighbours is an important concept, much like those gated communities in the US!) has been waiting for him to die so they could split the money even. Greed will turn just about everyone into murderers as the fight for the millions leads to a thrilling chase scene on top of the Banco de Bilbao building in downtown Madrid on Carrera de San Jerónimo. El problema es que el resto de la comunidad del finca llevan años esperando la muerte de ese señor para dividir su dinero entre ellos. La avaricia puede convertir a cualquier persona a ser asesino durante la lucha por los millones que termina arriba del edificio del Banco de Bilbao en el centro de Madrid en Carrera de San Jerónimo. 

This film for me is the best of Álex de la Iglesia’s films. Carmen Maura brings a touch of class missing from his earlier productions, although her character is as greedy and horrible as the rest of the neighbours of the block of flats. The story is more cohesive, and we see more of a running theme in the director’s oeuvre, the lengths someone will go to for a bit of cash. The humour is quite dark, but I did actually laugh out loud at some parts. I saw the film in 2008 when I was in my last semester of Hispanic Studies at university, but I had forgotten almost all of it, and I think the DVD stopped working toward the end if I remember correctly. Para mí, es la mejor película de la carrera de Álex de la Iglesia. Carmen Maura lleva un toque de clase que sus pelis anteriores faltaban, aunque es tan avariciosa y horrible como el resto de los vecinos. La historia es más coherente, y vemos más del tema que aparece en mucho de las pelis del director bilbaíno: hasta que punto irá un hombre/una mujer para un poco de pasta. El humor es muy negro, pero es verdad que me reí durante algunas escenas. Vi la película por la primera vez en 2008 cuando estaba en los últimos meses de la carrera de Estudios Hispánicos en la universidad, pero se me había olvidado la mayoría del film. Si recuerdo bien, el DVD paró de funcionar antes de acabar la película. 

The symbiotic excess of the Bilbao director is there, with the bugs and a violent elevator/lift death and another falling death. The film shows a maturity we haven’t seen before from the director, and it works. We see what the director is capable of. El symbiotic excess del bilbaíno está presente, con los bichos y una muerte violente del ascensor y otra muerte de caída libre. El film muestra una madurez que no hemos visto antes del director, y funciona bien con la película. Podemos ver las habilidades del director. 

We also see a lot of his sci-fi fandoms (one of the characters, a voyeur, of course, loves to dress as Darth Vader).  También vemos la pasión de otras películas del director, como un personaje (quien es un voyeur), siempre se disfraza como Darth Vader. 

Carmen Maura took home a Best Actress Goya for her performance. Carmen Maura ganó la Goya por Mejor Actriz para esta película.
