Basque director Álex de la Iglesia returns to Spain with 1999’s Dying of Laughter, a title taken a bit too literally in the film. El director vasco Álex de la Iglesia vuelve a España en 1999 con Muertos de risa, un título tomado literalmente en la película.

The movie starts out with the end. Nino (Santiago Segura) and Bruno (El Gran Wyoming) are running from the police as they race to host the New Year’s Eve 1993 special. Their hosting includes the shooting of each other. La película empieza con el final. Nino (Santiago Segura) y Bruno (El Gran Wyoming) están huyendo de la policía en una carrera al escenario para ser los presentadores del espectáculo de Nochevieja 1993. Este especial incluye un tiroteo entre los dos.

The narrator takes us back 20 years to where it all began, at a sleazy club in a small village in España Profunda where the two meet. Bruno talks Nino into trying out for a show in Madrid, and Nino is paralyzed by stage fright. When Bruno slaps Nino, they are converted into an overnight success. As their fame grows, the animosity between the two also grows to the point we see at the beginning of the film: they shoot each other live on camera. Volvemos con el narrador a 20 años antes donde todo empezó, en un club sórdido en un pueblo de España Profunda donde los dos se conocen por la primera vez. Bruno convence a Nino para acompañarle a un casting en Madrid. Allí, Nino está paralizado por miedo escénico. Bruno decide abofetear a Nino y de repente tienen mucho éxito con este show. Mientras se convierten a estrellas, empiezan a odiarse…mucho…hasta que deciden tirar el uno a otro enfrente de las cameras. 

The entirely fictional film takes in a couple of major Spanish events with the comedy duo. When the attempted coup d’etat of 23 February 1981 happens, the soldiers are entertained by Nino’s bunny outfit on tv. They also played a major part in the 1992 Olympic Opening Cermonies in Barcelona. La película es de ficción, pero incluye algunas eventos importantes en la historia reciente de España. Los soldados están entretenidos del disfraz de conejito de Nino durante 23F en 1981. También tenían una parte en las Ceremonias de los Juegos Olímpicos en Barcelona en 1992.

Dying of Laughter begins to show us the style Álex de la Iglesia is most known for, deeply black comedy and the effects of voyeurism, all with a bit of “symbiotic excess”, or going too far with certain things. (We really didn’t need to see worms eating the two from the inside with hatred.) En Muertos de Risa, vemos más del estilo de Álex de la Iglesia, una comedia negra y los efectos de voyerismo mezclado con su “symbiotic excess”, o la tendencia del director mostrar cosas que no hace falta ver. (No hace falta ver los gusanos dentro de los dos cómicos comiendose con odio.)

The film has some funny moments, but overall it’s not one of the director’s better films. Most of it is forgettable. Also, knowing El Gran Wyoming from El Intermedio (think The Daily Show for Spain), it was a bit distracting for me to see him acting, much like it’s distracting to see Jon Stewart act in his early career today. La película tiene sus momentos, pero no es una de las mejores películas del director. La mayoría es poco memorable. También, como conozco El Gran Wyoming de El Intermedio, me distrae bastante. 

It’s not the worst way to spend a few hours, but I can think of a lot better ways to spend those few hours too. No era la peor manera para perder unas horas, pero hay muchas mejores maneras para pasar mi tiempo libre.
