Camino preparation: The Third Way Out of Bilbao

It’s been a long time since I’ve been searching for those yellow arrows. I’m hoping to spend two weeks on the Camino this summer, and I’ve been pretty lazy this winter. I took advantage of a beautiful May Bilbao morning (that has turned into a grey, depressing afternoon) to explore the third way out of Bilbao on the Camino del Norte. Hace un rato desde mi última busqueda por esas flechas amarillas. Estoy esperando pasar unas dos semanas en el Camino este verano, y este verano he estado bastante vago. Aproveché de una mañana bonita de mayo (que después cambió a una tarde lluviosa) para explorar la tercera salida de Bilbao del Camino del Norte de Santiago.

The third route goes along the left-bank of the Nervión Estuary along the working-class Bilbao barrio of Zorroza, through Barakaldo, Sestao and on to Portugalete. I had intended to take it from Termibus, where two of the three exits of Bilbao converge, but I ended up biking it to Zorroza. BilbonBizi now charges for their bike rental service, and as they had charged me, I better make use of it. It meant I arrived there in less time and only had about 10 kilometres to hike. La tercera ruta de Bilbao a Portugalete va por la margen izquierda de la Ría Nervión y pasa por el barrio obrero de Zorroza, por Barakaldo, Sestao hasta Portugalete. Iba a empezar en Termibus, donde hay una bifurcación de dos de las tres salidas, pero decidí coger bici hasta Zorroza. Ahora BilbonBizi cobra por su servicio de bicis, y como ya me han cobrado, tengo que aprovecharlo. Eso significaba que llegué en menos tiempo a Zorroza y solo tenía que caminar unos 10 kilometros.

I had a café con leche at the aptly named “Bar Compostela” in Zorroza before finding those yellow arrows. I followed them through the main street of the barrio and left Bilbao. The arrows went straight through the working-class suburb (which is a city in its own right actually) Barakaldo. It took me by the Nervión for most of the hike, and I admired a chocolate lab playing in the water for a bit. A lot of people were taking advantage of the good weather and were out with their dogs and bikes. Me tomé un café con leche en el Bar Compostela (vaya nombre) en Zorroza antes de buscar esas flechas amarillas. Las seguí por la calle principal del barrio y salí de Bilbao. Las flechas pasan por la ciudad obrera Barakaldo. Estaba a lado de la Nervión por mucho del Camino. Paré para mirar un labrador jugando en la ría un rato. Muchas personas aprovecharon del buen tiempo para sacar el perro o su bici.

Sestao was another working class village, and I stopped for a café con leche so I could take advantage of their toilets, as I was drinking a lot of water. Portugalete was right down the road, and I arrived in less than two hours from Zorroza. A nice woman directed me down the stairs in a park to walk along the river. Sestao era otro pueblo obrero, y me tomé otro café con leche allí para aprovechar de sus aseos, como estaba bebiendo mucho agua. Portugalete estaba cada vez más cerca, y llegué en menos de dos horas de Zorroza. Una mujer maja me informó que había un caminato por la ría, y me bajé por las escalares.

My original plan was to cross the Puente Vizcaya (Hanging Bridge), but it costs 9€ to cross now, and I wasn’t paying that. I guess that will be one thing I will miss out on. El plan era cruzar el Puente de Vizcaya, pero ahora cuesta 9€ para cruzarlo por arriba y no quería pagar eso.

I think the right-bank Camino is my fave Camino out of Bilbao. The original Camino passes a nice ermita, but the trek through the shopping centre is torture. Granted, the Ikea does attracts many Bilbao pilgrims looking for pretty furniture, but most Camino Pilgrims would prefer to avoid it, I think. This one was really easy, but it passed too many former industrial zones for my tastes. It depends on which Camino is calling you, as I cannot speak for anyone’s tastes but my own. Creo que el Camino por la margen derecha es mi preferido Camino saliendo de Bilbao. El Camino original pasa por una ermita chula, pero el paseo por el centro comercial es una tortura. Vale, Ikea atrae muchos peregrinos bilbaínos, sí, pero creo que la mayoría de los peregrinos del Camino preferirían evitarlo. Este camino era bastante fácil, pero pasa por muchas zonas industriales. Depende en el peregrino y cual camino está llamando al peregrino individual. Solo puedo hablar de mis propios gustos.

Perdita Durango (1997)

Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia jumps the pond for his third feature film, Perdita Durango (Dance with the Devil) . Director español Álex de la Iglesia cruza el charco para hacer su tercera película de larga duración, Perdita Durango.

His first English-language film is a bit of a hodgepodge of popular/cult Hollywood directors like Tarantino, Robert Rodríguez and David Lynch (the character Perdita Durango is played by Isabella Rossellini in his 1990 Wild at Heart) with a bit of British director Danny Boyle mixed in. Su primer película en lengua inglésa es una mezcla de directores de culta y populares como Tarantino, Robert Rodríguez y David Lynch. De hecho, la personaje de Perdita Durango es interpretada por Isabella Rossellini en la pelí Wild at Heart de Lynch del año 1990.

Rosie Perez plays the title character, who appears to be ripped straight out of Robert Rodríguez film, a feisty woman who knows how to use a gun and a bit psychotic. She falls in love with Romeo (Javier Bardem), who becomes the main character of the film. He is more than a bit psychotic. The two kidnap and rape a young, white, American couple who they rape and plan to sacrifice in a bizarre ritual. However, that plan goes awry, and they’re forced to go on a road trip with the couple as they try to escape from a DEA agent (James Gandolfini). Rosie Perez interpreta la personaje titular, quien me parece robada de una película de Robert Rodríguez, una mujer animada que sabe utilizar las armas y es algo psicótica. Se enamora de Romeo (Javier Bardem), quien es el protagonista verdadero de la película. Es más de “un poco” psicótico. La pareja secuestra y viola a una pareja joven, blanca y americana (gringa). Después, quieren sacrificar la pareja joven en una ceremonia extraña. El plan no funciona, y tienen que escapar con la pareja y huir de un agente del DEA (James Gandolfini) estadounidense.

We know it’s a de la Iglesia film due to the symbiotic excess, or just his usual going too far for audiences to feel comfortable. Seriously, escaping in a truck full of human fetuses? The graphic rape scenes? The violence and fires? Se nota que es una película de Álex de la Iglesia dado a su “symbiotic excess”, o el hecho que el director hacen cosas para darnos un shock y para que sentamos incómodos. En serio, el escape en un camión de fetos humanos…las escenas de violaciones gráficas…la violencia…los incendios…

The film appears to have had a direct to video release in the States, and critics scoffed at it being a Tarantino ripoff. The film is too straight-forward to be Tarantino (and also, despite having strong language, has only about 1/10th of the strong language of Tarantino.) Parece que su estreno estadounidense fue de video, y los criticos la morfaron, diciendo que era robada de Tarantino. Es demasiado normal para ser Tarantino, y aunque tiene lengua fuerte, solo tiene un décimo de la lengua fuerte de una película de Tarantino.

The film, based on a novel and script by Barry Gifford was originally set to be directed by Spanish director Bigas Luna and to star Madonna, Bardem and Dennis Hopper. Would the film have been a bigger box-office success with them? I doubt it. El film es basado en un novel y guión de Barry Gifford, y iba a ser dirigido por director español Bigas Luna con Madonna, Bardem y Dennis Hopper. ¿Habría tenido más éxito así? Lo dudo.

There is something lost in translation, so-to-speak, for me in this film. It’s not a bad film, and it’s nothing out of the normal for Álex de la Iglesia. However, the film drags, and I wanted to cheat and stop in the first 20 minutes as it was so slow. I’m glad I didn’t, but it’s not a film I’ll go buy on DVD any time soon. It was a gutsy film for the Basque director, to direct a film in English and move outside of Spain. Some of his Spanish fans felt alienated by his film, whereas it was too graphic for the typical Hollywood box office fare. Creo que hay algo perdido en traducción para mi en esa película. No es tan mala como dicen, y no es nada fuera del normal para Álex de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, es un poco lenta, y quería hacer trampa y parar la película en los primeros 20 minutos porque era tan lenta. Me alegro de no haberlo hecho, pero tampoco voy a comprarlo en DVD. Era valiente por el director vasco hacer una película en inglés y hacer algo fuera de España tan pronto en su carrera. A algunos de sus fans españoles no les gustó que hiciera una peli de Hollywood, mientras era demasiada gráfica para la taquilla estadounidense.

It’s worth checking out if you’re a fan, but only for the diehard fans of Álex de la Iglesia or Javier Bardem. Vale la pena verla si eres un fan, pero solo para los frikis de Álex de la Iglesia o de Javier Bardem.

A day in the French Basque Country: Bayonne and Saint-Jean-De-Luz.

With my time in Bilbao coming to a close, I’m going to have to make every effort to see what I can in the amazingly beautiful but rainy north coast. The list of places to see is limitless, as I feel I could live in this region forever and just discover only a small amount of its wonders. That said, it’s time to move on, which means a frenzied six weeks of discovering places in the Basque Country and its surroundings. Cómo ya me quedo poco tiempo en Bilbao, tengo que hacer mucho esfuerzo para hacer lo que pueda en la costa del norte de la mejor península del mundo que es super bonito pero super lluvioso. La lista de sitios para conocer es sin limite. Me siento que uno pueda vivir en la región durante toda la vida y solo podría descubrir un poco de las maravillas del norte. Sin embargo, es tiempo para mirar al futuro, que quiere decir que tengo la locura de tener solo seis semanas más de descubrir sitios en Euskadi y los alrededores.

Bayonne (Baiona in Euskera, Bayona in Spanish) has been high on my must-see places since I saw it from the train to Bordeaux in 2013. I’ve been putting it off for whatever reason (usually not wanting to walk around with a giant umbrella), but I finally got my chance last weekend, on May 15 (I always seem to be on the road on this day!). Bayona ha sido muy alto en mi lista de cosas de “Hay que Ver” desde 2013 cuando lo vi desde el tren a Burdeos. Por alguno motivo o otro (usualmente porque daba pereza explorar con un paraguas en la mano) no he tenido la oportunidad, pero el fin de semana pasado aproveché del bueno tiempo, el 15 de mayo. (Suelo estar viajando el día 15 de mayo.)

The clouds were grey when I caught a BlaBlaCar from Bilbao to Bayonne, but during the hour-and-a-half trip, the clouds parted. By the time we arrived in Bayonne, it was a sunny day. I said “eskerrik asko” (thanks in Euskera) to the drivers and went off to explore the town. Era un día gris cuando cogí un BlaBlaCar desde Bilbao a Bayona, pero los nubes desaparecieron durante el viaje de una hora y media. Cuando llegamos a Bayona, era un día asoleado. He dicho “eskerrik asko” a la conductora y fui a explorar la ciudad.

Bayonne is a city of 45,855 residents, and the area has close to 300,000 inhabitants. The city itself is located on two rivers in the province of Lapurdi. Bayona tiene 45.855 habitantes y hay casí 300.000 habitantes en a zona. Bayona está situado en dos ríos en la provincia de Lapurdi.

My first stop was the Cathedral, Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, a Gothic building which dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. I was most impressed with the cloisters. I went on to explore the old walls a bit, had a café au lait at a tobacco shop/café on Rue Espagne, admired the Port d’Espagne (sorry for errors in French), and explored the market and the old streets. La primera parada era la Catedral, Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, un edificio gótico que era construido en los siglos 12 y 13. Me impresionaron bastante los claustros. Fui a explorar las murallas antiguas, me tomé un café au lait en un estanco-café combinado en Rue Espagne, admiré la Puerta de España, y exploré el mercado y las calles viejas.

My favourite part was the Rivers Nive and Adour. I spent most of the time walking along them and contemplating the water and the architecture of the town. I even had a good lunch on the river banks at Bar Au Clou. The chef’s special was roast chicken, amazing chips/French fries and a salad, and I had a nice glass of Chardonnay, all under 15€, a deal in France! Especially on a Sunday spring afternoon. Mis partes favoritas fueron los Riós Nive y Adour. Pasé la mayoria del tiempo caminando por los ríos y contemplando el agua y la arquitectura de la ciudad. Comí bastante bien el las orillas del Río Nive en Bar Au Clou. El plato del día era pollo asado con patatas y ensalada, y para beber una copa de “Chardonnay”, y costó menos de 15€, una ganga en Francia, especialmente por un domingo de primavera.

A lot of the town was closed as it was Sunday. I admired the city hall and the citadel from afar and contemplated the town while crossing the Adour river before catching a train to Saint-Jean-de-Luz. La ciudad estaba cerrada como era domingo. Admiré el ayuntamiento y la ciudadela y contemplé la ciudad cruzando el Río Adour antes de coger un tren a San Juan de Luz.

Exploring the town/explorando el pueblo

Donibane Lohizune, the Basque name for Saint-Jean-de-Luz, has been recommended to me for years now. With such hype, I should’ve known I was bound to be disappointed. They were having an Andalusian festival when I arrived. The streets were packed. The town has a population of 13,728, and all of them and more had to have been in the streets for the celebration. Me han recomendado Donibane Lohizune, el nombre en euskera por San Juan de Luz, durante mucho tiempo ya. Con tanta publicidad, iba a decepcionarme. Estaban celebrando una feria andaluza cuando llegué. Las calles estaban a tope con gente. El pueblo tiene una población de 13.728, y creo que todos sus habitantes del pueblo y las afueras estaban en la calle para celebrar.

All the stores were open, so I did get to some window shopping. As it was one of the few sunny Sunday’s we’ve had in 2016, the beach and waterfront were also packed. I have to admit, the beach didn’t impress me much. The provinces of Vizcaya and Gipuzkoa both have much more spectacular beaches. Still, I love the waterfront. Todas las tiendas estaban abiertas, y por eso he mirado cosas sin comprar. Como era uno de los pocos domingos asoleados que hemos tenido en 2016, la playa estaba llena de gente. Tengo que decir que me decepcionó la playa bastante. Las provincias de Vizcaya y Gipuzkoa tiene playas mucho más preciosas. Pero siempre me encanta cualquier costa.

I had a bus to catch from Irún, the first city in Spanish-owned Basque Country. One curiosity: both trains I caught in France were late. A lot of complaints come from the French about Renfe, Spain’s train system, but in a country of “mañana” (doesn’t mean tomorrow but whenever we feel like it), Renfe runs pretty efficiently and if it is a half hour late, you get your money back. Mi plan era coger un bus desde Irún, la primera ciudad sur de Río Bidasoa. Una curiosidad: ambos trenes que cogí en Francia llegaron tarde. Los franceses suelen quejarse de Renfe, el tren español, pero en un país de “mañana”, Renfe funciona bastante bien y si llega más de media hora tarde, se puede pedir un reembolso.

In Irún, I had about an hour and a half to kill, so I retraced a few steps I made two years ago on my first day on the Camino de Santiago. I saw more than one peregrino arriving for his or her pilgrimage across Spain. Tenía sobre una hora y media para perder en Irún. Fui a caminar de nuevo unos pasos del Camino de Santiago del Norte que hice hace dos años ya. Vi a más de un peregrino llegando para hacer el Camino.

It was a long but good day, and I arrived home tired. I hope the weather continues to improve so I can squeeze in all these day trips I never got around to taking these past three years! On to the next one! Era un día largo pero bueno, y llegué a casa muy cansado. Espero que el buen tiempo siga para hacer todos eses viajes del día que todavía me quedan hacer. ¡Hasta el próximo viaje!

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and Madrid feels fine. Es el fin del mundo como lo conocemos, y Madrid está bien.

A Basque priest figures out that the AntiChrist will be born on Dec. 25, 1995, and he makes his way to Madrid to try to stop the apocalypse from happening in Álex de la Iglesia’s second film, El Día de la Bestia (1995), or in English, The Day of the Beast. Un cura vasco se entera que el Anticristo nacerá el día de Navidad de 1995, y va a Madrid para intentar parar el apocalipsis de pasar en la segunda película de Álex de la Iglesia, El día de la bestia (1995).

My initial viewing of the film in 2007 for my Spanish Cinema class left me feeling less than impressed. I apparently gave it 4/10 stars on IMDB. However, even nine years after that class, I still can remember the discussion about the symbiotic excess and the hidden meanings of the film. I enjoyed the second viewing much more, especially with the metaphor of Madrid being hell and the Torres Kio, those two towers located in Plaza de Castilla, are the sign of the beast. Cuando la vi por la primera vez en 2007 para mi clase de cine español, no me gustaba nada. Di “4/10” estrellas a la película en IMDB. Sin embargo, unos 9 años después de la clase, recuerdo muy bien la charla sobre “symbiotic excess” y los significados escondidos en la película. Me gustaba mucho más El día de la bestia la segunda vez que la vi, especialmente la metáfora que Madrid es el infierno y los Torres Kio, o La puerta de Europa, o los torres ubicados en Plaza de Castilla, Madrid, son la marca de la bestia.

Álex Angulo plays the Basque priest who figures out that biblical signs that the AntiChrist will be born in Madrid on Christmas Day. He makes his way from Bilbao to Madrid and starts acting out by stealing books, knocking people over and instigating fights to attract the attention of Lucifer himself. Álex Angulo protagoniza el curo vasco que entiende que los mensajes secretos de la Biblia quieren decir que el Anticristo nacerá en Madrid el día de Navidad. Viaja desde Bilbao a Madrid y intenta hacer el malo por robar libros, empujar señores y empezando peleas para llamar la atención del Diablo.

Along the way, he meets up with heavy metal fan José María (Santiago Segura) and the host of a talk show dedicated to the occult, Cavan (Armando De Razza) to attract the devil to stop the AntiChrist being born. The ways the priest goes about doing it are unorthodox, and the film is a dark satire about the financial corruption of the early 1990s in Spain. Durante su camino, encuentra con un fan de música heavy, José María (Santiago Segura) y el presentador de un programa de televisión basura dedicado a ciencias negras, Cavan (Armando De Razza) para llamar el Diablo para parar el nacimiento del Anticristo. Las maneras del cura son poco comunes, y la película es una sátira negra sobre la corrupción bancaria de los años 1990 en España.

The most famous scene in the film is when the three main characters are hanging from the Schweppes advertisement on the Capital Building located in Callao in the very centre of Madrid, trying to escape the devil literally knocking at the door. La escena más famosa del film es cuando los tres protagonistas están colgados del anuncio de Schweppes en el Edificio Capital situado en el centro de Madrid, intentando escapar el Diablo llamando la puerta literalmente.

I’ve realised that de la Iglesia deals a lot with the subject of voyeurism in his films, and the talk show Cavan hosts is a prime example of this. Me he dado cuenta que de la Iglesia siempre trata del tema de voyerismo en sus películas, y el programa de Cavan es un buen ejemplo de eso.

For those, as I was in 2007, not familiar with the banking scandals surrounding the Torres Kio in Plaza de Castilla (also known as the Puerta de Europa/Gate of Europe), the film comes off as a gross horror comedy. After learning about what the film really represented and rewatching it, it works beautifully as a dark satire. Para los, como yo en 2007, que no son familiares con los escándalos bancarios con los Torres Kio, la película parece una comedia de terror grosera. Después de entender la situación y las metáforas y que representan, entendí la película mucho mejor la segunda vez. Es una buena sátira negra.

The director still has a lot of room to grow, but he has improved a lot since his first effort. Santiago Segura would go on to direct the Torrente films, and Álex Angulo would later act in Pan’s Labryinth (El laberinto del fauno). El director todavía tiene que madurar mucho, pero ha mejorado muchísimo desde su primera película. Después, Santiago Segura dirigirá las películas de Torrente, y Álex Angula participaría en la película El laberinto del fauno.

How to tell he is from Bilbao: Leave it to a Basque to say that the Torres Kio in Plaza de Castilla are a sign of the devil. It rains a lot in this film, just like Bilbao. The priest that saves the world is, of course, Basque. Sólo un vasco puede decir que los Torres Kio son un señal del diablo. Llueve mucho en la película, como llueve mucho en Bilbao. El curo que salva el mundo es, desde luego/noski, vasco.

The Definitive Basque Bucket List

This just in. After a long five year struggle, I am returning to the place I have felt most at home in my life, a place that I only lived for 11 months but feels like my home. I have been offered a position in the Comunidad Valenciana for the next academic year (Oct. 1, 2016-May 31 2017.) ¡Tengo noticias! Después de una lucha larga durante 5 años, voy a volver al sitio donde me siento como si fuera mi hogar, un sitio donde solo he vivido durante 11 meses pero sentía como mi casa. Me han ofrecido un trabajo en la Comunidad Valenciana por el próximo año escolar.

This means I will be leaving Bilbao, the capital of the world. I still have a lot of places on my bucket list. I haven’t updated this since last August, and since my time in Bilbao is rapidly coming to a close, it’s time to make a list of places I need to visit in the Greater Bilbao area before marching to Valencia. Este quiere decir que me marcho de Bilbao, la capital del mundo, y todavía me quedan muchos sitios para conocer. No he actualizado desde el agosto pasado, y como mi tiempo en Bilbao va a acabar dentro de nada, ahora toca mirar otra vez la lista de sitios que necesito ir por Gran Bilbao antes de marcharme de la capital del mundo a València.

I crossed off the places I’ve managed to accomplish this year. This summer, the plan is to make it to Oviedo on the Camino del Norte, and either finish it via the Primativo or Inglés in 2017. Alex de la Iglesia’s debut film is definitely not one of his better ones. The director is hit or miss, and his first movie is pure miss. La primera película de director Álex de la Iglesia no es uno de sus mejores películas. El director o hace películas buenísimas o películas muy malas sin intermedio. Su primera película es muy pero muy mal.

It’s the year 2012, twenty years into the future from when this was filmed in 1992, and the beautiful people have taken over the world. A group of handicap people have formed a terrorist group to strike back. At the wedding of a beautiful person, they kill everyone but the bride, who they take hostage to ask for ransom. They then are fighting a group on another planet. El año es 2012, 20 años en el futuro desde cuando hicieron la película en 1992, y la gente guapa ya han conquistado el mundo. Un grupo de minusválidos han creado un grupo terrorista para vencer los guapos. Durante la boda de una persona guapa, matan a todos menos la novia, quien secuestran para pedir rescate por ella. Después luchan contra un grupo de otra planeta.

I’m not a fan of science fiction or action movies unless they are really well done, which this one is not. I do admire de la Iglesia for the point he was trying to make: the beautiful people run society while everyone else is left to fend for themselves, we have an obsession with voyeurism and the lives of the rich and famous. However, the violence and gore in this film was a bit too much for my tastes. He also was a rookie, and his inexperience shows a lot. No soy fan del género ficción ciencia o acción si no están muy buenas, y esa película simplemente no es buena. Admiro a de la Iglesia por lo que quiso decir con esa pelí: la gente guapa deciden todo en la sociedad mientras los demás tienen que luchar por todo sin ayuda. Nos obsesiona mirar las vidas de otras (programas de reality) y las vidas de los “ricos y famosos”. Sin embargo, la violencia y sangre de la película era demasiado para mi. También se nota que era un novato y se nota su inexperencia.

Pedro Almodóvar produced the film, and we are treated to a fake commercial and fake newscasts. The newscasts are the best part of the film. Almodóvar saw promise in the young Basque director. Nonetheless, the movie comes off as something Ed Wood would have directed. Pedro Almodóvar produjo la película, y hay un anuncio falso y telenoticias falsas. Las telenoticias son la mejor parte de la película. Almodóvar pensaba que el directo vasco joven se prometió (y es la verdad). Sin embarg, el película es algo que Ed Wood pudiera dirigir.

How to tell he is from Bilbao: The film is a metaphor for how the bilbaínos must take over the world from the people who do not believe that Bilbao is the Capital of the World.

Hiking clubs are a tradition in the Basque Country and throughout the Greatest Peninsula in the World (the Iberian Peninsula for those in doubt). I’ve been meaning to take part in some activities with one since I arrived in Bilbao, the Capital of the World, in 2013 but never got around to it. Clubes de senderismo son una gran tradición en Euskadi y en todo de la Mejor Península del Mundo (La Península Ibérica, claro). He querido participar en unas acticidades con uno desde mi llegada en Bilbao, la Capital del Mundo, en 2013, pero por alguna razón o otra, nunca lo hice hasta ahora.

I had signed up for a couple of trips but had to cancel due to illness or injury, but I finally was able to take part in Juventus SD‘s excursion to Jamboba (also known as El Puntón) (1506 metres) and Cabeza de Butrón (1601 metres) near the village of Anguiano, La Rioja (population 546). Me he apuntado a un par de viajes antes pero tenía que anular dado a estar malito o estar lesionado. The bus left Bilbao at the early hour of 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 1st (Labour Day/Día de Trabajador in much of Europe…aka MayDay, and also Mother’s Day in Spain, so happy Spanish Mother’s Day to all the mother’s out there). I didn’t have time to go for my usual café con leche, and my caffeine dependence reared its ugly head during most of the day. I slept on the bus and woke up when the bus was crossing from Euskadi into La Rioja. El autobús salió de Bilbao temprano, a las 8 de la mañana, domingo, el 1 de mayo (Día de trabajador y Día de la madre en España. ¡Felicidades atrasadas a todas las madres!) No tenía tiempo para tomarme mi café de leche de siempre, y mi dependencia en la cafeína me afectó durante todo el ´dia. Me dormí por el viaje de autobús y me desperté cuando estaba cruzando la frontera entre Euskadi y La Rioja.

We arrived to Anguiano about 10 am. Anguiano is famous for its “Danza de los Zancos”, or stilt dances. It has a church and an ermita (hermitage) and a few bars. It’s a great place for a relaxing Sunday, but this Sunday was anything but relaxing. Llegamos a Anguiano sobre las 10. Anguiano es conocido por su “Danza de los Zanco”. Hay una iglesia y una ermita y unos bares. Es un sitio tranquilo para desconectar un domingo, pero no había descanso este domingo.

We started the 22 kilometre hike. The trail was pretty easy to follow, but as I didn’t have to rely on my own feeble orientation skills and could just follow the leader, it may not have been so easy to follow. The good thing about going with a hiking club is that there is less opportunity to get lost. Empezamos la ruta de 22 kilometres. El sendero era fácil seguir, pero como no tenía que depender en mis habilidades de orientación y solo tenía que seguir los demás, quizás no fuera tan fácil. Lo bueno de ir con un club de monte es hay menos oportunidades para perderte.

The bad thing is not being able to set my own pace. I am a person who takes many breaks while hiking to admire the views and so my calf muscles don’t tense up. I was soon the last in line as everyone passed me as I kept stopping for pictures and I tired out easily. I needed that café con leche! Lo malo es que no pude ir con mi propio ritmo. Suelo descansar mucho cuando hago senderismo para apreciar las vistas y para descansar los gemelos, que suelo tener cargados. Muy pronto fui la última persona porque todos me adelantaron cuando paré para hacer fotos y me cansé más fácilmente.

We crossed a small stream on a log and saw some beautiful views of La Rioja. There were no times for breaks, and I struggled to keep up with everyone. The Basques are a very athletic sort who spend all their lives climbing mountains, and I haven’t been hiking a real mountain since January. We finally stopped to rest for a few minutes at the top of Jamboba. Cruzamos un arroyo pequeño por un tronco y vimos unas vistas preciosas de La Rioja. No había tiempo para descansos, y me costó seguir el ritmo de los demás. Los vascos son muy atléticos y empiezan a subir montes cuando son muy jóvenes. No he subido un monte real desde enero. Por fin descansamos un rato al cima de Jamboba.

The rest was too short, and we were soon hiking again to Cabeza de Butrón/Cabeza Marihuena, at 1601 metres, making it the highest mountain I’ve climbed to date (higher than the famous Gorbea in Euskadi). We stopped for some photos, but with the cold wind (the trees had frost), we didn’t stay too long. El descanso fue cortito. Muy pronto volvimos a andar, esta vez a la cima de Cabeza de Butrón/Cabeza Marihuena, con 1601 metros de altura, es el monte más alto que he subido hasta ahora (más alto que el famoso Gorbeia en Euskadi). Hicimos unas fotos, pero con el viento frío (los árboles tenían escarcha), no quedamos mucho tiempo.

The descent was longer than anticipated but just as beautiful. I got really behind the group, and I think the man in charge of making sure no one got lost was a bit exasperated with me taking so long. He joked with me “¡Vas lento” and I replied “¡Vais rápido!” at one point. The forest was quite nice, and I needed some rest time. I felt bad, honestly, about not catching up with the group, but I think I arrived only about 10 minutes after they did. El descenso hasta Anguiano tardó más tiempo que anticipé pero era muy bonito. El grupo me adelantó bastante, y creo que el chico en cargo de asegurar que nadie se pierde estaba un poco exasperado conmigo por tardar tanto. Bromeó conmigo “¡Vas lento!”. Me sentí mal, para ser sincero, que no pude ir al ritmo del grupo, pero al final llegué solo unos 10 minutos después de ellos.

I had a headache, and my calf muscles were hurting me (ever since my sprained ankle in 2014, I’ve had to be extra careful with my right leg), but my spirits were high when I arrived in Anguiano. After having my café con leche and the bocadillo de pavo (turkey) I had brought with me, I was ready to explore the town! Tenía un dolor de cabeza, y los gemelos estaban bastante cargados (desde el esguince de tobillo que sufrí en 2014, tengo que andar con cuidado con la pierna derecha), pero el animo bien cuando llegué a Anguiano. Después de tomarme un café con leche y el bocadillo de pavo que había llevado, estaba listo para explorar el pueblo.

Anguiano is quite a charming village, and I enjoyed passing through the streets. Anguiano es un pueblo encantador, y disfruté de pasear por sus calles.

I am hoping to go on another hike with the club at the end of the month, but weather and availability will tell. I just don’t have the Euros to buy the extra ponchos and waterproof boots for rain hiking at the moment. It would be a solid investment. Espero ir con el club a hacer otra ruta al finales del mes, pero el tiempo y su disponibilidad ya dirá. Mi excusa es que no tengo la pasta para comprar los chubasqueros y botas impermeables para caminar en la lluvia en este momento.

The bus left for Bilbao at 18:00, and I was tired. It was a great day, and I pushed myself to my limit. No, it wasn’t my 38 km day on the Camino, but it was the highest I have climbed so far. El autobús salió a Bilbao a las 18, y estaba cansado. Lo pasé genial, y me empujé al máximo. No, no era igual al día que hice 38 kilómetros en el Camino, pero era el monte más alto que he subido hasta ahora.

I debated whether or not to continue highlighting Spanish directors. In the end, although I know they’re not extremely popular entries, it’s a side project that I enjoy and gives me something to focus on in the Bilbao rain. Lo he pensando, si iba a seguir con escribir sobre directores españoles. Al final, aunque sé no son las entradas más populares del blog, es un proyecto que disfruto y me da algo de hacer en la lluvia “sirimiri” de Bilbao que no cesa.

I toyed with highlighting Luis Buñuel, and I also thought about highlighting one of my favourite actress and the ultimate Chica Almodóvar, Carmen Maura. In the end, those projects are saved for a later time. Pensaba en escribir sobre Luis Buñuel, y también he pensando en escribir sobre Carmen Maura, una de mis actrices preferidas y la mítica Chica Almodóvar. As my time in Bilbao is most likely drawing to a close, I decided to highlight a director from the Capital of the World, Álex de la Iglesia. Pedro Almodóvar produced his first film, Acción Mutante, in 1993. However, in many ways, de la Iglesia is Almodóvar’s exact opposite. Como creo que la hora de marcharme de Bilbao, decidí escribir sobre un director de la Capital del Mundo, Álex de la Iglesia. Pedro Almodóvar produjo si primera película, Acción Mutante, en 1993. Sin embargo, en muchas maneras, de la Iglesia es el contrario de Almodóvar.

While Almodóvar would be seen as John Waters meets Stanley Kubrick crossed with Fellini, de la Iglesia can be seen as a grotesque Kevin Smith meets a grotesque Michael Bay, but a Bay that has a modicum of talent. Almodóvar is from the bright, shiny word of Metropolis and de la Iglesia is from the dark, gritty world of Gotham (albeit Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher’s version of Gotham, not Christopher Nolan’s.) Mientras Almodóvar sería un John Waters mezclado con Stanley Kubrick mezclado con Fellini, de la Iglesia es un Kevin Smith grosero mezclado con un Michael Bay grosero, pero un Bay que tiene algo de talento. Almodóvar viene del mundo brillante y asoleado de Metropolis, y de la Iglesias es del mundo gris, oscuro y áspero de Gotham (pero quiero decir el Gotham de Tim Burton o Joel Schumacher y no el Gotham de Christopher Nolan.)

Álex de la Iglesia was born on 4 December 1965 in Bilbao, the capital of the world. He studied philosophy at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao, and after university and a brief stint in television, he began working as a production designer for films. Almodóvar took note of a short film de la Iglesia made with his friend José Guerricaechevarria, Mirindas Asesinas, in 1991 and produced de la Iglesia’s first feature-length film, Acción Mutante. Álex de la Iglesia nació el 4 de diciembre 1965 en Bilbao, la capital del mundo. Estudió filosofía en la Universidad de Deusto en Bilbao. Después de la universidad y un trabajo breve en televisón, empezó a trabajar como un diseñador de producción de películas. Un corte de Álex de la Iglesia que hizo con su amigo José Guerricaechevarria, Mirindas Asesinas, llamó la atención de Almodóvar en 1991, y el director famoso produjo el primer cortolargo del bilbaíno, Acción Mutante.

He tried to make it in Hollywood with Perdita Durango, but he was closely compared with Tarantino and the film didn’t meet much success. He returned to Spain where his films have been successful, sometimes both at the box office and critically, sometimes only one or the other. Después, de la Iglesia intentó en Hollywood con Perdita Durango, pero la película era considera demasiada “posTarantino” y no recibió mucho éxito en la taquilla. Volvió a España donde ha tenido bastante éxito, a veces en ambos la taquilla y con los críticos, a veces con solo uno o el otro.

He has directed 14 films as of 2016, has received various nominations for the Goya (Spain’s Oscar) and won once for Best Director for El Día de la Bestia in 1995. Hasta 2016, ha dirigido 14 películas y ha recibido varias nominciones de las Goyas. Ganó la Goya por Mejor Director en 1994 por El día de la Bestia.

While I am not as familiar with his work as I am Almodóvar, I have seen a few Álex de la Iglesia films. I’m no expert, so I won’t do a weekly checklist, but I will try to grow with each entry and look for what makes the Basque director tick. I hope you join me for this journey! Aunque no soy tan familiar con su carrera como soy con la carrera de Almodóar, he visto algunas películas del director vasco. No soy tan experto para hacer un checklist, pero intenteré crecer con cada entrada de blog y mirar lo que hace el director vasco único. Espero que os guste el proyecto de la Iglesia.

Growing up, The Teacher from the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler and Jared Lee were some of my favourite books. I was (and still am) unaware of The Creature from the Black Lagoon series. Until I wrote the Setmeravelles entry for Soria, I never knew it really existed and was a place in Spain. Since last year, I’ve been dying to go. Cuando era un niño, me encanta la serie de libros de Mike Thaler y Jared Lee, El profesor de la Laguna Negra. No sabía nada (y todavía no sé nada) de la serie La Criatura de la Laguna Negra. Hasta que escribí la entrada de las Set Meravelles de Soria, no sabía que existe de verdad y era un sitio real en España. Desde entonces, he tenido muchas ganas ir a la Laguna Negra.

I’m still a bit sceptical of tour groups, but when I saw an advertisement from Viajes Premium Explorer for two of my undiscovered wonders of Soria, I immediately knew I had to go. Tour groups are still not my favourite way of travel, but sometimes they’re a necessary evil, and this one isn’t so bad. Todavía estoy algo escéptico de grupos de turismo, pero cuando vi un anuncio de Viajes Premium Explorer que incluyó dos de mis maravillas desconocidas de la provincia de Soria, sabía que tenía que apuntarme. Todavía no me gustan tanto los grupos grandes de turismo, pero a veces hay que hacer algo que no quieres para aprovechar bien una oferta.

On Sunday, 10 April, I woke up too early to make it to Termibus at the departure time of 7 a.m. Yawn. I got some sleep in on the bus and awoke to some beautiful countryside in La Rioja on the way to Soria, a province in Castilla y León. Domingo, el 10 de abril, me desperté demasiado pronto para ir a Termibus antes de la hora de 7.00 de la mañana. Estaba bostezando. Dormí algo en el autobús y me desperté a paisaje bonito riojano por el camino a Soria, una provincia de Castilla y León.

We stopped for a coffee-toilet break, but the place was closed. I stretched my legs anyway. We lucked out and found a place open in a village in La Rioja. The poor village hostal was overworked by a bus full of Basques and one Euskovalencianoyanki. The café con leche and beautiful views helped me to wake up a bit. Hicimos una parada para tomar un café y ir al baño, pero el bar estaba cerrado. Me bajé de autobús para estirar las piernas. Tuvimos suerte porque había un bar abierto en el próximo pueblo. El pobre hostal estaba agobiado por nosotros, un autobús lleno de vascos y un euskovalencianoyanki. El café con leche y vistas bonitas me despertaron un poco.

A little while later, we finally arrived at the Laguna Negra. I was excited and surprised to find it frozen over. A lagoon that is supposedly bottomless covered with snow and ice. (In Spain in April no less. These are the mountains!) There was a beautiful waterfall nearby that hadn’t frozen over, and the snow gave it a magical feeling. I would like to return with drier weather. Unos minutos después, llegamos en la Laguna Negra. Me emocioné y me sorprendí ver la laguna helada. Un laguna que dicen que no tiene fondo helado y cubierto de nieve y hielo. (En España en el mes de abril. ¡Son las montañas! Había una cascada preciosa que no estaba helada, y la nieve dio al sitio un sentimiento de magia. Me gustaría verlo sin nieve un día.

It is a 2 kilometre hike from the parking lot, but the bus was able to meet us for the way back down. We had about an hour and a half to explore it. The lagoon was formed by glaciers, much like the Great Lakes, and is located high in the mountains. Está a unos dos kilometros del parking, pero el autobús nos recogió en un parking más cerca de la laguna. Tuvimos una hora y media para explorar. La laguna fue creado por los glaciares, como los Lagos Grandes, y está ubicado en las montañas.

Next stop was the beautiful Cañón del Río Lobos (Wolf River Canyon). I hadn’t heard of it, not even in my research for Soria province and its set meravelles, so it was definitely an unexpected surprise. It may not be impressive to someone who lives near the Grand Canyon, but as I was only on the Northern Rim once when I was 10, I was easily impressed. Próxima parada fue el bonito Cañón del Río Lobos. No sabía de ello antes, ni en mi investigación para la provincia de Soria y sus set meravelles, y era una sorpresa bienvenida. Igual no sería tan impresionante para alguien de la zona del Cañón de Colorado, pero como solo he estado una vez en la zona norte cuando tenía 10, me quedé muy impresionado.

I found some caves and explored the area. The bus left us off about 1 kilometre from the ermita (hermitage) San Bartolomé, which looks built into the rocky landscape behind it. There were some beautiful rock formations, and I made a mental note to return one day for a trekking excursion. 75% of the Natural Park is located in Soria with 25% in the province of Burgos. Encontré unas cuevas y exploré la zona. El autobús nos dejó a un kilometro de la ermita San Bartolomé, que parece construido del paisaje rocoso en el fondo. Había formaciones de roca chulas, y hice una nota mental para volver un día para hacer senderismo con más tiempo. 75% del Parque Natural pertenece a Soria con 25% en Burgos.

The last place on the day’s agenda was the village El Burgo de Osma, population 5,250, a Villa de Interés Turístico since 1962 and a Cojunto Histórico-Artístico since 1993. La última parada del día era el pueblo soriano El Burgo de Osma, población 5.250, una Villa de Interés Turístico desde 1962 y un Cojunto Histórico-Artístico desde 1993.

We only had about an hour to explore the village, but I saw the Plaza Mayor (and even had a relaxing café con leche as I saw València CF actually win a fútbol match! Amunt!), the beautiful cathedral, and my fave, the Roman bridge and the old city walls. Sólo tuvimos una media hora para ver el pueblo, pero me dio tiempo ver la Plaza Mayor y tomar un relaxing café con leche durante el partido de València CF-Sevilla (y por fin, ¡ganó València! Amunt!). También tenía tiempo para ver la catedral hermosa, y mi favorito, un puente romano y las murallas antiguas de la ciudad.

I saw the Castle of Osma in the distance, and I would’ve loved to have had time to hike up to it. Alas, we had to return to Bilbao, and the trip back to the so-called Capital of the World by its residents and no one else was over three hours. I arrived home tired but happy after a great day on the road, crossing off items on my infinite Bucket List for Spain and the greatest peninsula in the world. Vi el Castillo de Osma en la distancia, y me hubiera encantado caminar hasta el castillo. Pero tuvimos que volver a Bilbao, la capital del mundo, y el viaje de El Burgo de Osma a Bilbao tardó unas tres horas. Llegúe en casa cansado y con sueño pero contento después de un gran día viendo Soria, tachando cosas de mi Bucket List infinita de España y la mejor península del mundo.
