Spain has their own Oscars! ¡España tiene sus propios Oscars!

Since 1987, the Premios Goyas (Goya Awards), named for artist Francisco de  Goya, have awarded the best in Spanish film. Best Film, Best actors, best scripts, best director, best technical awards…all are honoured at this award show usually in early February. Desde 1987, los Premios Goyas, nombrado por el artista Francisco de Goya, han premiado lo mejor del cine español. Mejor película, mejores actores, mejores guiones, mejor director, mejores premios técnicos…todos reciben honores en los Premios Goyas, que suelen ser en los principios de febrero. 

This year, Truman, directed by Cesc Gay, received the highest honour. The film is about Julián, a man dying of cancer (Argentine actor Ricardo Darín) who receives an unexpected visit from his friend, Tomás (Javier Cámara), who helps him find a home for his dog, Truman. The film is a tearjerker but filled with hope. Este año, Truman, dirigido por Cesc Gay, ha ganado el premio para Mejor Película. La película trata de Julián, un hombre que está muriéndose de cáncer (interpretado por el argentino Ricardo Darín), y su amigo Tomás (Javier Cámara), quien viene a visitarle sin anunciar. Tomás le ayuda a Julián encontrar una casa para su perro, Truman, después de su muerte. La peli es triste pero también da esperanza.

I have a quest to eventually see all the winning films. (However, my next project will be Álex de la Iglesia). I’ve seen a bit, and unlike the Oscars, the Goyas tend to actually reward the best of the year. However, their love for Los lunes al sol over Hable con ella will always remain baffling! Tengo el reto para ver todas las películas ganadoras. (Pero el próximo proyecto será de Álex de la Iglesia). He visto 19 ya, y suelen dar el premio a la mejor película, aunque siempre hay algunas que no lo merecen, como Los lunes al sol y no Hable con ella, que nunca voy a entender.

1998: La buena estrella
1999: La niña de tus ojos (Rating: A Ay, Penélope singing in German and her Andaluz accent.)
2000: Todo sobre mi madre (Rating: A)
2001: El Bola (Rating: B+ A sad film. Una película fuerte.)
2002: Los Otros (The Others) Rating: A- (Yes, the Nicole Kidman film!)
2003: Los lunes al sol (Rating: B+ A good movie, but Hable con ella was better)
2004: Te doy mis ojos (Rating: B+ I don’t remember much of this movie honestly)
2005: Mar adentro (Rating: C. Yes, I hate this film, though it is well directed and well acted.)
2006: La vida secreta de palabras (Rating: B- I think. I had to look at the plot to remember if I saw it!)
