We have all had flights from hell, but none of us have had a flight quite like the one seen in I’m So Excited (which should be translated as The Passenger Lovers, but no, marketing wanted to destroy this film even further), the 2013 farce from Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.

I saw this film opening weekend in Madrid at the Cine Golem near Plaza de España.  A lot of critics hated it, but I enjoyed it for what it was, a throwback to early Almodóvar films that was criticizing the current Spanish regime.

The film takes place aboard an airplane. After an all too brief cameo from Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas as inept baggage handlers, the Península (Pe, short for Penélope) flight takes off for Mexico City with an eccentric hodgepodge of characters and employees. When they learn that they cannot land the plane safely due to technical problems, they wind up circling Toledo (not Ohio but Castilla La Mancha) nonstop. All the coach passengers have been drugged so they will sleep, and only the passengers in first class are aware of the problem.

The passengers include a psychic virgin who knows she’ll lose her virginity that day (Lola Dueñas), a dominatrix prostitute with information about the 600 most powerful men in Spain (Cecilia Roth), a Mexican bounty hunter (José María Yazpik), a young couple on their honeymoon (Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Laya Martí), a man involved with two women (Guillermo Toledo) and a banker about to face charges of corruption (José Luis Torrijo). Along with the three gayest flight attendants, a bisexual pilot with his bi-curious co-pilot, they are in for the flight of their lives. Thank God for that Agua de València to make the flight go smoother.

Secrets and passions are revealed before the flight comes to an end. Wacky hijinks ensue.

The film was met with some of the worst reviews of Almodóvar’s career. Many people who were accustomed to the films from the latter half of his career were shocked at the wacky, immature humour. This was his first full-out comedy since 1988’s Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, and even his fans had forgotten about his start during the movida Madrileña.

While it’s not even one of his strongest comedies, it is quite entertaining, especially if you know about Spain’s current economic crisis (going around in circles with no solution is a great metaphor) and how many airports were opened to never be used. In Almodóvar’s comedy, one has to look beneath the surface to appreciate what he’s trying to say. The people in coach are the Spanish citizens, swallowing whatever the government is saying, while only the people in first-class (the rich elite) have the power to change things…but don’t. We’re all in this mess together.

It’s definitely not as bad as the critics said upon its release, but it is far from being one of his stronger films. Almodóvar said he wanted to make something light and to make people laugh, as in times of crisis we need to laugh more. Whether viewers are laughing with Almodóvar remains to be seen and depends on the viewer. I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Todos hemos pasado una mala experiencia durante un vuelo, pero creo que ninguno de nosotros nunca hemos pasado un vuelo como el vuelo de Los amantes pasajeros, la película chiflada del director español Pedro Almodóvar. 

Fui a ver esta película el fin de semana de su estreno en Madrid en el Cine Golem cerca de Plaza de España. Muchos de los críticos detestan esta película, pero la disfruté por lo que era, un intento a hacer una película del estilo de los años 80 que criticaba la crisis económica española. 

La película tiene lugar en un avión. Después de un cameo de Penélope Cruz y Antonio Banderas como empleados de la compañía de aerolínea Península (Pe) ineptos, el vuelo de Pe despegue para Ciudad de México con una mezcolanza excéntrica de personajes y empleados. Cuando se enteran que no pueden aterrizar el avión dado de un problema mecánico, vuelen en un círculo sobre Toledo (no de Ohio pero de Castilla La Mancha) sin acabar. Todos los pasajeros de clase turista han sido drogados para que no se enteren de los problemas, y sólo los pasajeros de clase primera saben que está pasando.

Los pasajeros incluyen una virgen psíquica que sabe que está a punto de perder su virginidad (Lola Dueñas), una prostituta de S&M con información de los 600 hombres más poderosos de España (Cecilia Roth), un asesino mexicano (José María Yazpik), una pareja joven en su luna de miel (Miguel Ángel Silvestre y Laya Martí), un hombre enrollado con dos mujeres (Guillermo Toledo) y un banquero a punto de ser acusado de corrupción (José Luis Torrijo). También los azafatas con los hombres más gays de historia, y los pilotos son bisexual y bicurioso. Van a tener el vuelo más raro de sus vidas. Gracias a Dios que los azafatas pueden preparar una buena agua de Valencia.

Los secretos y pasiones van a ser revelados antes de terminar el vuelo. Travesuras raras suceden. 

La película recibió algunas de los peores criticas de su carrera. Muchos fans ya se han acostumbrado a las películas de la segunda parte de la carrera de Almodóvar y recibieron un shock con el humor chiflado e inmaduro. Era su primera comedia desde Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios en 1988, y incluso sus fans se han olvidado de su comienzo durante la movida madrileña. 

No es una de sus mejores comedias, pero es entretenida, especialmente cuando piensas en la crisis económica española que empezó en 2008. Todos andan en círculos sin una solución es gran metáfora. También es un comentario de los aeropuertos españoles que se construyen sin usar. En la comedia de Almodóvar, hay que buscar para el significado escondido para apreciar lo que quiere decir. La gente que vuelan en clase turista son los españoles normales, quien tienen que tragar lo que dicen y hacen el gobierno español, mientras es sola la gente de clase primera que tiene el poder para cambiar las cosas, pero no lo hacen. Todos estamos juntos en este lío. 

No es tan mala como los críticos dijieron en 2013, pero tampoco es una de sus mejores películas. Almodóvar dijo que quería hacer algo más ligera y para hacer la gente reírse, porque en tiempos de crisis todos necesitamos reírnos más. No sé si los espectadores están riéndose con Almodóvar. Yo voy a elegir reírme con él.
