It’s been a while since I’ve headed to the mountains, about two months, and I got the year off with an epic hike that ended with me getting lost due to, once again, lack of signs. Hace un buen rato desde la última vez que fui al monte, sobre dos meses, y empecé mi año de senderismo con una ruta mitica que acabó con perderme otra vez dado que había una falta de señales. 

I left home about 10:30 to hike to Pagasarri, the most popular mountain around Bilbao. After stopping off for a pintxo de tortilla and café con leche in the barrio of Miribilla on the long road to Pagasarri, I arrived to the usual entrance to the mountain. I was planning on using Wikiloc for the first time, but the app went crazy in the walk from the bar with wifi to the mountain entrance, so I gave up on it. So much for technology. Salí de casa sobre las 10:30 para caminar a Pagasarri, el monte bilbaíno más popular. Después de tomarme un pintxo de tortilla y café con leche en el barrio de Miribilla, situado en camino a Pagasarri, llegué a la entrada al monte. Quería intentar usar Wikiloc por la primera vez, pero el app no me funcionó bien y me falló en el camino entre el bar y la entrada. Entonces, me rendí en usarlo. Vaya tecnologia. 

Being a nice, sunny and warm Sunday (about 20ºC/68ºF), the mountain was filled with hikers and families. I arrived to the summit of Pagasarri quickly, as this time I took the Camino Viejo (Old Way/Trail).  For the first time ever I caught the refugio open and had a café con leche. They were out of bread, and I wanted to get to my main destination for the day, Ganekogorta. Dado que era enero y era un día de sol y 20º grados, había mucha gente de senderismo y familias. Llegué al cima de Pagasarri sin incendencia. Esta vez hice la ruta del Camino Viejo. Por fin vi el refugio de Pagasarri abierto. Me tomé un café on leche, pero no les quedó nada de pan para tomarme una bocata, y quería ir a mi destino final por el día, Ganekogorta.

Located about 4 kilometres past Pagasarri, Ganekogorta is the actual highest mountain of Bilbao (Pagasarri is more popular and closer to the city, so it often gets this credit mistakenly). Historically, it was said to divide Vizcaya and Álava, but the mountain belongs only to Vizcaya. Situado a unos 4 kilometros desde Pagasarri, Ganekogorta es el monte más alto de Bilbao (Pagasarri es más popular y más cerca a la ciudad, entonces, suelen dar crédito por error a Pagasarri). Históricamente, se dice que era la frontera entre Vizcaya y Álava, pero pertence solamente a Vizcaya. 

After meeting a cute dog, I went on my way to the summit. There were some really interesting clouds, and I stopped to have my oranges and admire the views. There were still some people, but nowhere near the amount of people at Pagasarri. I was able to contemplate nature in peace. It was windy at the top, and the views were spectacular. Después de cruzarme con un perro mono, fui hasta el cima. Había nubes interesantes, y me paré para comer naranjas y disfrutar de las vistas. Todavía había gente, pero mucho menos que en Pagasarri. Podía contemplar la naturaleza con tranquilidad. 

I decided that since it was about 10 kilometres back to my house and 10 to the next town, Llodio, to explore the unknown (to me) way. I took a small path around the mountain in the direction of Llodio, and that was the last sign I saw. Decedí que dado que había 10 kilometros hasta llegar en mi casa y 10 hasta el próximo pueblo, Llodio, para elegir el camino menos conocido para mi. Tomé un sendero pequeño que pasó el monte en dirección de Llodio. Este era el último señal que vi.

I asked two people if I was going in the right way, and they both reassured me. One said to take the path to the right after the path became big, and so I did, but apparently there was more than one and took the wrong one. Pregunté a dos personas si iba en buen camino, y los dos me dijeron que sí. Uno me dijo para tomar el sendero a la derecha después del camino grande. Entonces lo hice, pero creo que había más que uno y tomé la ruta inadecuada.

The sun was setting, and I had been walking for seven hours. I wanted to get to Llodio, and I used my GPS on the mobile to navigate myself to the nearest road. It still took me another hour to get to Llodio, where I had a quick coffee before catching the 7:17 pm train back to Bilbao, 27 minutes away. It felt good to sit down. Estaba atardeciendo, y había estado caminado durante unos siete horas. Quería llegar a Llodio. Usé el GPS de móvil para navegar hasta la carretera más cercana. Todavía me tardó una hora para llegar a Llodio, donde me tomé un café mientras esperaba el tren a las 19:17 a Bilbao. El tren duró 27 minutos. Estaba super contento para sentarme por fin.

Once again, I have learned my lesson to take trails that are well-marked. However, until the moment you’re on them, you never know. Another goal for 2016 shall be to learn how to use Wikiloc successfully.  Una vez más, he aprendido que debería tomar rutas con buena señalización. Sin embargo, hasta que llegues al sendero, nunca se sabe. Otra meta para 2016 será aprender usar Wikiloc.
