What have I done to deserve this? This might be my most quoted Pedro Almodóvar title ever. Almodóvar begins to realise his genius in this 1984 film.

Gloria (Carmen Maura) is the typical frustrated Spanish housewife yearning for something more. She has an addiction to pills and is quietly breaking down. Her abusive taxi-driving husband is in love with a German woman from years ago. Her oldest son is a drug-dealer, and her youngest son is gay. Her mother-in-law hordes magdalena (a type of muffin commonly eaten for breakfast in Spain) and yearns for life in the pueblo (in her village). To make ends meet, Gloria sells her gay son to a pedophile dentist. She later kills her husband with a ham leg with the only witness being the grandmother’s pet lizard.

Almodóvar’s most cohesive plot and most accessible film to date is a treat to return to years after my original viewings. Living in Spain and understanding the frustration of the middle class housewives better made me appreciate this film in a whole new light. There is a desperate humour and black comedy underneath the surface of this film. While we still have the prostitute best friend, and Gloria does sell her gay son to the pedophile dentist, Almodóvar has calmed down quite a bit in his fourth entry. Almodóvar has stated he was wanting to make an homage to Italian neorealism (while Cristal’s (Verónica Fornique) apartment still provides the typical Almodovarian bright colours and kitsch furniture, Gloria lives in a more modest southern Madrid flat. The film is also inspired by Jean Luc Goddard, but in Almodóvar’s unique way.

Sometimes Almodóvar’s films have strong connections to other films in his oeuvre. This one is strongly tied with the themes of Volver.

Madrid was more than the movida in the 80s, and this film shows the struggles and problems of the every day Madrid family trying to make ends meet.

¿Qué he hecho para merece esto? Eso puede ser mi más citado título de Almodóvar de historia. El genio de Almodóvar se empieza a realizar con este película de 1984.

Gloria (Carmen Maura) es la ama de casa típica española (frustrada) deseando algo más en su vida. Es adicta a pastillas y está sufriendo en silencio un ataque de nervios. Su marido, un taxista, es abusivo y está enamorado de una mujera alemana de su pasado. Su hijo mayor vende drogas y su hijo pequeño es gay. Su suegra guarda magadalenas y se queja que la vida se vive mejor en el pueblo. Para hacer las cuentas, Gloria vende su hijo gay a un dentista pedófilo. Después, se mata a su marido con un hueso de jamón, el único testigo el largato de la abuela.

Este es el trama más fácil entender y completo de Almodóvar hasta ahora, y es un placer volver a verla años después de verla por la primera vez. Después de vivir en España y entender la situación y la frustración de las amas de casas de los barrios del sur de Madrid me ha ayudado apreciar la peli mejor. Hay un humor desesperado y comedia negra bajo el exterior de la película. Aunque todavía sigue una amiga prostituta de Gloria, y ella vende su hijo a un dentista pediofila, Almodóvar se tranquilizó bastante en su cuatra película.  El director dijo que quería hacer un homenaje a neorealismo italiano. Aunque el piso de Cristal (Verónica Forniqué) tiene los mismos colores vibrantes de siempre), Gloria vive en un piso modesto en un barrio del sur de Madrid. También Almodóvar cogió inspiración de Jean Luc Goddard…pero en estilo Almodóvar.

A veces las películas de Almodóvar tienen conexión fuerte con otras pelis en su obra completa. Este peli tiene conexiones con Volver.

Madrid era más de la movida en los años 80, y este película muestra los problemas de un familia típica de Madrid intendando sobrevivir.
