A woman on the run after her boyfriend dies decides to hide in a convent. No, not Sister Act. It’s the third film from Spain’s most famous director, Pedro Almodóvar, and one of the few films ever to improve the name in translation. (Entre tinieblas translates literally as “in the darkness”, but Dark Habits is a better name as it talks about the dark habits of the nuns who are always in their habits.)

The 1983 film was Almodóvar’s first studio-backed film. Although he felt somewhat limited being backed by a studio, the film still manages to be outrageous for its time. A singer, Yolanda, finds her boyfriend dead from a heroin overdose, and to avoid the police, she takes refuge in the Humiliated Redeemers Convent with a tiger, a Mother Superior who is lesbian and has a nasty hard drug addiction, and the four sisters: Sister Manure, Sister Snake, Sister Rat and Sister Damned.  I mean, don’t you just hate it when you are hiding in a convent and you’re coming off a heroin high to discover the convent has a pet tiger?

The film tells the misadventures of the convent and is critical of the Catholic Church in a time where Spain was coming off the 40 year dictatorship of Franco. Almodóvar has argued that the film is not antireligious because it shows true Christianity of loving the sinner and accepting people for their faults and imperfections. One nun writes smutty romance, drug use is rampant, and they keep a pet tiger.  The convent is having financial problems and is trafficking drugs to keep afloat.

Although this is protagonist Cristina Sánchez Pascual’s last appearance in an Almodóvar film, it marks his first collaboration with Marisa Paredes and Chus Lampreave and also features Carmen Maura and Cecilia Roth (in a small role). It marks a noted improvement in film technique and cinematography. The already classic wild Almodóvar movida madrileña moments are all there, but his storytelling technique is improving. We’re seeing more glimpses of the director Almodóvar is about to become.

Una mujer huye después de la muerte de su novio decide esconderse en un convento. No, no es Sister Act: una monja de cuidado. Es la tercera película del director más famoso de España, Pedro Almodóvar, y una de las pocas pelis que el título se traduce mejor que la versión original. Hábitos oscuras en inglés en lugar de “In the Darkness” porque tiene el doble sentido de los hábitos oscuros del convento y el uniforme de las monjas. 

La película de 1983 era la primera que Almodóvar hizo con un estudio. Aunque se sentiera algo limitado en lo que pudo hacer con un estudio, la película todavía es escandalosa, especialmente por su tiempo. Yolanda, una cantanta, encuentra su novio muerto de un sobredosis de heriona, y para evitar la polica, busca refugio en el Convento Redentoras Humilladas, que tiene un tigre para mascota, una Madre Superior que es lesbiana y tiene una mala adicción a drogas duras, y las cuatra Hermanas: Sor Estiércol, Sor Vibora, Sor Rata y Sor Perdida. ¿No te da cosa cuando estás refugiado/a en un convento y estás volviendo a normalidad después de tomar heroina para descrubir dicho convento tiene un tigre para mascota?

La peli se trata de las aventuras del convento y critica la Iglesia Católica durante una época cuando España estaba saliendo de la dictadura de 40 años de Franco y España todavía era bastante católico. Almodóvar ha dicho que la peli no es antireligiosa porque muestra el cristiano verdadero: amar el pecador y aceptar la gente como son con todas sus fallas y imperfecciones. Una monja escribe novelas de romance erótica, hay mucho abuso de drogas, y tiene un tigre. El convento tiene problemas de dinero y vende drogas para pagar facturas.

Este peli es la última peli de Almodóvar para la protagonista Cristina Sánchez Pascual, pero es la primera colaboración con Marisa Paredes y Chus Lampreave y también tiene Carmen Maura y Cecilia Roth (en un papel pequeño). Hay un mejoramiento de técnica y cinematografía. Ya tiene fama la presencia de la movida madrileña y su estilo en las pelis de Almodóvar, pero la técnica se mejora y la historia se desarolla mejor. Ya vemos más del director Almodóvar es capable de ser.
